Exclamation Auburn Fans - how do you feel now?
Does anyone out there still think Gus Malzahn needs to be replaced?

I'm not taking anything away from the fine job Kirby Smart has done rebuilding Georgia, but that game last night was a HUGE win for Auburn. Not just a win over the #1 team - by the biggest margin EVER - but also sets up a winner-take-all SEC West matchup in the Iron Bowl (so, conceivably, Malzahn could erase Saban's work this season too).

Thoughts?

Mark, everything in life is judged as a whole, not piecemeal. How many big games has Gus won in a convincing manner versus how many has he inexplicably lost, or worse, has lost by wide margins?

Then there are the behind the scenes issues. How many solid assistants have left the program because they were micro managed? How many players have been over utilized until injuries ended their season? How many players have been arrested?

No doubt the game yesterday likely extended his job for a year and a win in each of the next two weeks (yes even over ULM) will only solidify that position, but if he wins those games he will still only have beaten Alabama & Georgia just twice for a campus where seasons are measured by those games and two of those 4 wins will have come by way of apparent divine intervention (the Kick Six & Prayer at Jordan Hare). The inexplicable let downs, including L.S.U. this year, have been the norm. Games like yesterday's, while most welcomed and appreciated, have been the exception.

Face it, the biggest reason we won yesterday was our D.C.. Holding Chubb and Michelle to 46 total rushing yards on 32 attempts pretty much sealed Georgia's fate. Auburn was a dumpster fire defensively until Steele arrived.

I don't know of many Auburn people who hate Malzahn. He's not the kind of guy anyone hates. He's not of despicable character, he's not a rogue, he's not even a bad guy. Those around him see him as so uni-focused on his offense that he has little concept of what is going on around him otherwise.

The issue has been whether he is really the best O.C. that anyone could have, or whether he is just not a capable manager of the various departments for which a head coach must be responsible. The majority of the time it has been the former. Kevin Steele has been a tremendous help in balancing out Gus's abilities.

Think of it this way. Yesterday was a beautiful photograph of a nebula from Hubble in a photo album with too many photos of a black hole.
