Charleston is a great city with zero basketball history or at large fan base. As a vacation spot it wins hands down but we are talking college basketball tournaments not hanging out at the beach or fine dining. Greensboro has a long history with college basketball and is a much bigger metro area. Boeheim is a hater who would be better served finding something else to ***** about. UNCG would be a great fit for the CAA if they could be talked into it.
Charleston is a better local for the tourney, because you get the casual fan as well!
Because Charleston,SC is a hot bed for college basketball? They might get 50 walkup fans for a CAA tournament game that does not involve the local team and maybe zero.
I live here. Back when we had the SoCon, Charleston was the best place to have the tourney. CofC, Citadel, Furman, Wofford, Davidson, GSU, App, and even WCU would all travel hundreds of fans to the tourney. All of those schools also have alumni bases here.
The tourney left to Chattanooga and Charlotte though right before the league got really good in the 2009-11 time frame.
We had a CofC/Davidson final with 8,000 fans in 2007. That was before the Davidson Elite 8 run. The way Davidson was packing the seats that last season they had Steph, there would have been a chance at over 10K if two of CofC/Davidson/Citadel had played in a final. The Citadel also had a 20 win season the same year.
The SoCon though had a horrible division system, as the top 2 teams in each division would get a bye. The top team in the north, Chattanooga, had 11 league wins, while four teams in the south division had 12 or more wins, but only two teams got a bye.
Now, you have CofC and UNCW. A large portion of the sports fans in the Charleston area can’t name a 3rd team in the league. Having the tourney here helps the awareness of the league in this market.
Winthrop would be a very good add to the league. They would add awareness in the Charlotte market, a top 25 TV market, have a 6,100 seat arena (bigger than a large part of the CAA), and have an alumni base throughout the state of SC. Them and Stony Brook would be my two most wanted new schools.
