Local Sports Talk
I'm a Bengal fan, but is this city really as crazy about the Bengals as the radio and TV guys make it seem? Immediately after the game 1530 and 700 both go straight into Bengal talk for hours on end. How many different ways can they disect that Bengals suck and the Oline sucks. Even in the off season, they still get 60-70% of air time, and the Reds get about 30%

Sick of hearing about the same boring regurgatated stories about a team we know isn't gonna do anything for at least 3 more years.

It's no different than TV: NFL drives ratings.

Those stations also have a vested interest in their bengals contracts.

That's why I quit listening years ago. No one cares except the same 10 West Siders.

I'm with you. If a visitor from another planet tuned in to our local media for a whole week, they might not even realize that the University of Cincinnati exists.

But by gawd, they would know how bad the Reds and Bengals suck.

This. They are contractually obligated to cover those teams so much.

I'd argue this town has significant interest in CBB. If coverage was based on interest there would be a daily CBB show

I think you are right. I wouldn't even care if they wanted to talk about OSU, Xavier, ND, etc. some. Just sick of hearing the same talking points about the Bengals (mostly) and Reds get beat to death.

I listen to the Skinny Podcast each week (Richard Skinner, Chad Brendel, and Rick Broering). They cover UC, XU, UK and a little NKU. They also do some national stuff. I know some of you guys hate Skinner, but that show is what I think would be very successful to a large radio audience IMO.

Think you have it the other way around. Skinner hates UC. He's part of the media contingent who wishes UC would just go away. UC fans can get his subpar discussion somewhere else.

We need to recruit the Common Man down to Cincy. Reunite him with The Torg.

I'm well aware of Skinner's history. I listened to him going all the way back in the 90s when he was on 1160BOB, 1360 Homer, etc.

This show is decent and so far a year in he hasn't been overtly hostile towards UC. Besides, Chad does most of the UC talk. Even Broering, who covers XU, does a decent job of not being overly critical of UC (albeit, at times he points out weaknesses as he sees them.)

Back to my OP, I do think there is a market on local radio for CBB if formatted properly. Tons of CBB fans in the area between all the various fan bases.

RE: Local Sports Talk
There's no question that increased college basketball coverage would be popular here in Cincinnati. We have clearly established ourselves as one of the top 10 national TV markets for college basketball, never falling below #7 for any year I could find. The demand is demonstrably there to have coverage rivaling that of Greensboro, Raleigh, Kansas City, and Indianapolis.

Here are the numbers (with links) for every year I could find:

2009-10 #5
2011-12 #7
2012-13 #6
2013-14 #7
2014-15 #6
2015-16 #5
2016-17 #6

Unfortunately for all Cincinnatians, the Reds and Bengals are media gluttons who receive waaaaaaay more coverage than they warrant. I didn't research the numbers (because I don't need to), but Cincinnati is definitely not a top 5 - 10 TV market for pro sports.

RE: Local Sports Talk
I'm in complete agreement this market is hungry for college basketball coverage on local sports talk radio. As someone else suggested, what else is there to discuss about the hapless Bengals and Reds at this point? Of course they have sponsors lined up and are contractually bound to that content--even if both teams never win again.

I'd even take an hour long syndicated program with Jay Bilas or other national commentators recapping the week in college basketball. I've often channel surfed to WHAS Louisville while driving or walking just to hear some college basketball conversation. And I have no love for UK or U of L compelling me to tune in.
