NIU-Ball State
Huskies up 35-7 at half.

Defensive end Sutton Smith broke the NIU season record for tackles for loss when he got his 10.5 sack.

Ball State after losing their QB + RB -- are like, the worst team in the nation. Worse than 50% of the FCS teams.

RE: NIU-Ball State
It's sad really. They've been completely noncompetitive in the MAC. Outscored 256 to 46 in five MAC games. Currently losing to NIU 49-14.

Every team has injuries. WMU currently has 15 guys out for the season. But you're telling me Ball State's season, nah, even their competitiveness, hinged on just two players? That's a bad, bad look for coach Neu.

They're playing their 2nd string QB to start the 2nd half.

NIU up 49-17 at end of 3rd qtr.

NIU played four QBs last year and has played three QBs this season.

63-17 final

NIU had two blocked punts for TDs, played three different QBs, and a lot of backups got playing time.

Sounds pretty much par for the course. We had all of our backups in the game in the middle of the 3rd when we played them.

Wonder what Card fans think about all this.

Hard to believe they were a play or two away from beating a Big Ten team in September. It was Illinois, but still.

Bodes well for Miami if we can beat EMU next week. Montgomery may be calling our name.

Not making excuses because they are a bad football team. But they lost their starting QB, backup QB, 3rd string, and now on their 4th string.

Heck, I am guessing the 4th string is watching in the stands with his parents on game day normally.

Lembo left the cupboard bare. He thought he had jobs lined up that he didn't and didn't recruit (and/or couldn't). I think they said that Ball State had has 30 freshman play this year. That's not a good recipe for success.

RE: NIU-Ball State
I’m looking more at the defensive side, giving up 50+ points per game. And it’s not like opponents are piling on a tired D late in the game. These games look to be over by halftime. Even a glut of backups should make some of these contests at least marginally competitive.

If I were a Ball State fan, I’d just assume there’s a dysfunctional locker room going on this season. Which is really tough to fix especially in mid season.

They’ll probably get things on a better track during the off-season. Or else that Notre Dame game next September might be rated PG-13.

Yes on the locker room thing. If you look at the scores, something happened after the WKU game. We don't know what though. They need a new OC and new DC but I don't know that it will happen.

When we played BSU my main takeaway was "wow, they're poorly coached." Especially the defense.

If I were a coach of any kind on that staff I'd have a hard time sleeping at night. They're embarrassing themselves.

Two players?

BSU is down three QBs (well, two QBs after Milas made it back)
All-MAC running back
Two experienced starting WRs
One experienced starting TE
Four (I think) starting linemen at this point
Several DBs
Has their starting MLB in a club cast nearly the entire season
Is the only team in D1 to have 4 QBs play
Plays the most freshmen of any team in D1
Had to burn most of the redshirts
Has only one or two people on the starting offense currently that started the season as starters

All that being said, the fact that they are this uncompetitive is baffling and troubling. But it's way more than two players.

RE: NIU-Ball State
Milas looked better than the other guy. If he had had more time to throw they would have done more on offense. So the O-linemen being out was costly.

Reminds me of our 2007 season when we had a ton of injuries and won 2 games all year.

Milas is a 5th year senior who started half of 2015 and four games this year, while Plitt was a fourth string RS freshman who was behind a walk-on in the depth chart and got very limited snaps at practice until the last two weeks, so Milas should look better. Yeah, the o-line was getting pummeled the entire game. NIU was easily in the backfield most plays, though the predictable playcalling made it easy to crowd the box and get mismatches IMHO. I would consider the line to be arguably the most costly of the injuries, as the line was one of our strengths going in and could have helped Milas as well as Huntley and Dunner, who are adequate backups at RB. Neal, Gilbert, Lacaneria, Hogue are pretty big to be out at once as well.

But....... it seems like the team and the coaches are out of sync. I expected losses in these games, but anticipated competitiveness. Playing that many freshmen (esp in the DB) will lead to mistakes and big plays, but the play calling and the defensive scheme are mind-boggling IMHO. Something's amiss here...

Joey Lynch is predictable? (Is there a sarcasm button?)

Pete Lembo left Ball State in a real bad place it appears. They will get better.

All the backups getting playing time for Ball State could help them for next year though, in terms of depth and experience.
