1999 MAC Title Game Flashback...
Did anyone else have flashbacks to the 1999 MAC Title game against Marshall after last night's game? I seem to remember blowing a similar big 4th quarter lead. Sickening feeling all night and today.

No, that was against one of the finest teams in MAC history on the road in 1999. Last night's choke job came against garbage.

My point is that it was a game I thought we had in hand, not comparing the competition in any way.

I was in attendance at Marshall in 1999, and don't remember at any point feeling that we had it in the bag against that team. At home against CMU was another story.

My buddy and I were talking about the exact same thing.

Over 30,000 in attendance that day.

Blew a 23-0 lead in the third quarter.

That was back in the day where the MAC got just 1 bowl, and it went to the MACC winner. That loss took a while to exorcise from my mind.

Yes. That's exactly what I was talking about. Actually got over this CMU debacle much quicker. The 1999 title game sickening feeling stuck for a long time!

I remember standing with a crowd in front of a huge projection TV at Wayside watching that disaster... I remember the silence after Pennington connected on that last TD... it probably only lasted a few seconds... but it felt like an hour... I will NEVER forget that moment as a Bronco.... crushing.

Arguably the two most heartbreaking Bronco football games in our history occurred within 12 months of each other: that ‘99 MACC and ‘00 CMU loss. The latter was so deflating that losing the ‘00 MACC (again, at Marshall) felt expected, even though we were favored.

But the funny part was watching those azzhats struggling to get the goal posts out into the street after tearing them down.

The choke-jobs against CMU in 2004 and 2010 also hurt bad. WMU had the better teams, but gave the games away in the 4th quarter...just like last Wednesday.

Leadership matters.

Who is the team leader on this squad? Boggan, Franklin? I think Spillane was in line until he fled after Fleck was jabbing him. Hard for him to retain that title now. Spillane has been pretty quiet vs last year other than EMU stuff at goal line

We didn't do it to ourselves in 1999 like we did with fumbles against CMU last week. Pennington came on in the second half and there was no stopping him. Even the announcers admitted that 'Western had left it on the field' and had 'nothing to be ashamed of.'.

Let's take a moment to appreciate that if Spillane hadn't gotten that INT in the MACC and Ohio scored the winning TD as time expired, that heartbreaker would've blown away the 1999 MACC collapse and any of those CMU debacles. That would've stung for a loooong time.

I might've 03-puke if Ohio stuck that dagger in.

I am sure I would have..... I was getting pretty sick to my stomach as that drive was happening.

Yep

Watching that 99 MACC video...that flag on the hit on Pennington on the sideline was complete garbage.
