Caulton Tudor Passes
Caulton Tudor, a retired sportswriter for the Raleigh News and Observer ,has passed away. He had reported on ACC basketball for decades.

Love 'em or hate 'em, the N&O has the best college basketball reporting of any newspaper in the country. Tudor was one of the best.

I didn't realized he had been ill. His columns were appearing regularly right to the end. I believe he was an East Carolina alum, but it was hard to find that information, and harder still to detect it in his reporting. A mark of a good journalist.

He survived the closing of the Raleigh Times, the McClatchy purchase of the N&O and all "right sizing" that came with it.

I liked his writing. He gave you his opinion but he also gave you the facts.

RE: Caulton Tudor Passes
He was from Angier a little town in my county and yes he was an ECU graduate. Another interesting fact was that he participated in the longest high school (and possibly just plain longest) basketball game in history. It was the Harnett County 1-A championship game in 1964. Angier vs Boone Trail. It lasted 13 overtimes. I think the final score was 56-54, Boone Trail. I didn't know Mr. Tutor but know several of the participants in this game. They almost stopped the game twice. Once when it was clear that the game would stretch into Sunday morning. It was against the rules to play on Sundays and the refs tried to call the state director of HS athletics for permission to continue but couldn't reach him. They decided to keep playing and face the consequences. Then after the number of overtimes reached double digits a doctor came out of the stands and said he wouldn't allow the game to continue unless the players were allowed to drink some water. It seems that back then players didn't drink during the game. They were each allowed to get a drink of water and play resumed. Another interesting fact is that there were no substitutions for either team. Oh to have been at that game, but I was only six years old at the time.

Oh, I’m very sorry to hear that. I have read his work for years and agree that he is a legend.
