They got so delusional over their program last year a loss like this is kinda funny. PJ was a once in a lifetime coach for them. They are just now coming to that realization.
Watched 3/4 of the game, and still don't believe CMU is a very good team. No reason we shouldn't win next week. #5 the RB is legit, have to shadow Conklin with 1.5 guys (although he was non-existent in this game), but I think our D will definitely be up to the task.
PJ was far from a "once in a lifetime coach". Look at all of the coaching talent that came out of the MAC. He has Minnesota at 4-4 right now when they finished 9-4 last year.
It was probably, ya know, the fact they had Corey Davis, Zach Terrell, Taylor Moton, and Keion Adams. Teams don't lose all that talent and immediately go back to being elite. Any WMU fan who thought they were going to win the MAC again was completely delusional. Everyone knew it would be Toledo this year, barring some fluke.
Once in a lifetime for WMU, not talking about the entire MAC. The best teams in the MAC ebb and flow based on the quality of their head coaches and QB's. Those 2 factors alone probably account for 90% of the success or failure of any given MAC team. NIU had their run with great QB play not long ago, then it was BG with Babers, and PJ took your program on an amazing run with a veteran QB. Hopefully they enjoyed it while it lasted. I was rooting for the Broncos like everyone else.
They still, ya know, probably have the best overall talent of any team in the MAC. Whining about losing a few players is just an excuse at this point. PJ stockpiled that team for 4 years, not just 1. The main reason Toledo was/is this year's favorite goes back to my point above. They have a good coach, and by far the best QB in the MAC.
End of story.
Who knows, Lester may grow on the job, make some coaching changes, and end up being a good MAC coach. Or he may be a horrible overreach, as many in Broncoland are now claiming. If he's mediocre to bad they're right back to being a mediocre to bad team. Have to find the stud QB as well. Wassink seems decent, but Goddard certainly doesn't look like a future All-MAC performer.
Just like everybody else, our season next year will be very good or poor depending on whether or not we find a legit QB replacement for Roback.
Strangely, I feel kinda bad for Bronco fans after that one, because we've managed to lose at least 4 games this year just like they did last night.
