RE: 2018-19 Basketball scheduling / UC , Ohio St announce home and home
I'm by no means an insider but in last year's public scrimmage he was arguably the best player on the court. He's had a year to work on his strength and conditioning along with his basketball skills. I'm not saying expect him to be a all conference player but I'd be shocked if he weren't 12 pts 4-5 assists. I realize he was at Sacred Heart but to be the conference player of the year in any conference is significant.

Hahahaha, are you thinking first overall pick or just somewhere in the lottery?
Broome's likely to be the 5th best player on this team. That may even be optimistic for a little PG from Sacred Heart. But knowing what we have with the other starters, you could say that he is the most important player on this team.

According to Chad Brendel (believe it was mentioned during one of his free podcasts), Broome has been the best player on the floor during summer workouts. Troy was a solid, dependable 3 year starter at the point and there are definitely aspects of his game that will be missed, but Broome could be a star.

Hoping he's the straw that stirs the 'Cats drink this season, but cautiously thinking the transition from low major Sacred Heart to playing against UC's opponents with bigger, stronger, faster guards will require an adjustment similar to minor league sluggers facing major league pitching.

Good news in that regard is that he had a whole year to practice against UC's defense.

He played against 6'4 and 6'3 senior starting guards all year in practice. Think he'll adjust fine. My only real concern is style wise Gary and Kyle aren't exactly runners, how will they adjust to a faster style of play? Think JE and JC will love it.

If Broome is better than Caupain... we're a legit final 4 contender. If Broome is leave early for the NBA able, we're a national title contender.
It will be the first year Cronin has ever had a starter at every position that can legitimately score for his position.
We will have depth that now has some experience with Jenifer, Brooks, and Scott. If Williams can be a decent 10 mins/ game wing sub for the 2/3.
Really our question marks to be very good this year are very small. With this conversation this marks the first time I can everyremember UC fans having talked about all 5 starters at some point as being someone that leaves the team early for the NBA... including the Huggins years.
Can everyone improve just a little from last year?
Can Broome play = to or better than Caupain last year?
Can Keith Williams give at least 10 minutes of serviceable production?

Just like the little point guard from Trinity Valley Community College that led us to the final four his first year?

I've never even seen the kid play, so what do I know. And I'm glad to hear that he's been looking great in summer workouts, but I don't think those translate very well to real games. Perhaps I've become unduly cynical from UC's history of transfers who were the best players in the practice and then sort of flopped when the lights came on. And, to be fair, Kyle Washington has been really good, but his wasn't much like Broome's situation.

That was 25 years ago. It's not particularly relevant. Recruiting was different. Junior College was much different. And, in any case, for every Van Exel there are how many Michael Hortons and Charles Williams'?
Look, man, I hope you guys are right and Broome is the next Nicky V. As people are saying, if he is anywhere close to that level, this is a top 5 team in the country. But I would lower your expectations. Even is he's merely solid, or he's up and down (which I think is more likely) this group will be really good.

I went to the red and black scrimmage from last season. Broome was by far the best player on the court. He's the up tempo drive to the lane starter and if he can control the ball, he will be the quickest and most agile guard we've had in a while.

Ahhh...the obligatory "best player on the court" posts based on Summer ball. I heard that phrase about Shaq Thomas for 4 years.

Is there any type of Midnight Madness thing anymore? It seems that gets less and less important each year.
Also, is it a chicken or goat that I sacrifice for UC basketball team health? I can never remember.

Broome averaged 23 ppg playing division I ball. I'm not going to crown him as an NBA player or an All-American, but he's going to do just fine.

He would have to have an all-american type season in my opinion to leave after this year. Which if that's the case then we would have had a great season so I'm fine with either outcome.
A lot of the players from Europe are picked up as potential, or simply to save a pick. Most don't end up being a Giannis.
Having said that, there was a player much like Evans who went to South Carolina(I remember because the Gamecocks expressed an interest in both) in PJ Dozier. If you look at their stats, they're similar with one notable exception, Evans had a jump shot and Dozier didn't.
Given that Dozier declared after South Carolina's tournament run and went undrafted, certainly it could be the case that Evans is going to put up numbers but without marked improvement, those may be for not. I think he'd be best off, if he got a slightly better handle and could show an improvement with how he finishes around the basket. If he does those two things, two way players who shoot as well as he did, and who have the measurables and athleticism he does, stand a pretty good chance of getting picked up.
Dozier in the meanwhile is kind of doing the SK thing, picking up 10 day contracts here and there. Dude will probably have to go to the developmental league for awhile. He seems to be in the same boat Caupain is right now, though I think Caupain will end up making his money over-seas.

It seems that midnight madness events started dying a dog's death about 20 years ago. The only places that still do it are lame basketball only schools like xavier or maybe schools where no one gives a sh!t about football, like UK.
BTW, I'd recommend both chicken and goat just to be safe.

Regarding Midnight Madness, I enjoyed those the first couple of years. I think the novelty of it wore off for many. When you're ready for the season to begin, an intrasquad scrimmage just isn't that enlightening or entertaining. I agree with the suggestion that "basketball only" schools are more likely to still do these since it's the only game in town.
Instead of Midnight Madness I'd like to see UC make "Opening Night" more of an event: pregame entertainment, special food/beverage, pregame concert, etc. Sure, the opponent is usually awful. But the start of the season should be marked with some fanfare. Of course it's a little different this year too being off campus.
