anyone watching the new Star Trek show?
Okay, so I have now seen the first two episodes twice and just finished watching the third episode of Star Trek Discovery. I feel prepared to give an opening opinion of the show.

---SOME SPOILERS AHEAD---

Episode 1 (The Vulcan Hello) - This episode was done by Bryan Fuller, Nick Meyer, and David Semel. Overall, It was a decent first episode IMHO. There's a whole lot of talking (in Klingon) and a lot of character introduction...so it's kinda slow. I really like the idea of a human raised on Vulcan and changing the Klingon's doesn't bother me. I did feel kinda uncomfortable with Burnham's choice at the end because it seemed rash. (I guess that's her human side coming through)

Pro's: I enjoyed Michelle Yeoh as Captain Phillipa Georgiou. I like Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham. I really like the Saru character. It's a high concept story that works in modern politics (which is a Trek thing) as the Klingon's might as well have been shouting 'America First' while holding Tiki torches. I love the intro sequence/main title...it's way better than Enterprise's Christian pop tune. (see bottom of review) I also really like the title of this one (the vulcan hello) and how it works into the episode.

Cons: A little too much Klingon talking and the font choice of the Klingon subtitles was hard to read as it makes them look like they're always shouting. The opening kinda seemed silly to me...I mean, walking a big path to make a delta shield? come on...

I give it a 7 out of 10.

Episode 2 (Battle at the Binary Stars) - This episode was done by Bryan Fuller, Nick Meyer, and Alex Kurtzman. Stuff actually happens in this episode! This looks like the eventual formation of the Federation/Klingon neutral zone as the events of this episode happen in proximity to Gamma Hydra...established in Wrath of Khan as the neutral zone. Lots of great effects and space battles to make up for episode 1's slow start. We also have the surprise demise of a couple main characters showing 'no one is safe' in this new Trek series. More politics from the Klingon's as they establish their isolationism which is a reflection of today's sudden anti-immigration feelings.

Pro's: I like that Klingon's come in different colors and shapes so they don't all look the same. I like that there is conflict between the characters where not everyone gets along and main characters even die. I like the big budget feel to the space battles. Props to James Frain for killing it as Sarek.

Con's: Show, don't tell...by that I mean, stop telling me how they are all good buddies from serving together for 7 years...SHOW ME. I really wish CBS had simply made these two episodes a single 90 minute pilot they would air with limited commercials. We STILL haven't seen Discovery or it's Captain, lol

I give it 7.3 out of 10

Episode 3 (Context is for Kings) - This episode was done by Akiva Goldsman and Alex Kurtzman under showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg. This episode feels very different from the first two and makes the pilot feel like a prologue at the beginning of a book. This seems to be what the show will feel like week-to-week...and that's a good thing. I feel much more comfortable with the show by the end of this one. You also finally get introduced to the USS Discovery and it's Captain.

Pro's: So far each episode has gotten better and the characters feel more comfortable in their roles. I like the dynamic with Burnham and Saru. There are some good Easter eggs like the Tribble on Captain Lorca's desk. I enjoyed Anthony Rapp's character, Lt. Stamets. I also enjoyed the 'Alice in Wonderland' references.

Con's: too many lens flare's and the idea of going from life in jail to officer seems like quite a leap. I also thought the CGI was a little obvious in this one.

I give it a 7.5 out of 10

Edit: To prep for this show I watched the first three episodes of TNG (Encounter at Farpoint, The Naked Now, and Code of Honor)...Discovery is definitely off to a better start, lol

RE: anyone watching the new Star Trek show?
I personally, outside of the Original Series and the Original Animated Series, have had a tough time getting into any of the other tv series.

As far as the movies go, I find most of the "originals" decent to good. Yes, some were stronger than others, but aside from the Generations one in which I hated without question, they were all at least watchable. I really like all three of the new movies as I think that cast has some of the best chemistry yet in keeping that original TV Star Trek vibe that I liked.

the USS Discovery is actually based on a design from the 70s by Ralph Mcquarrie for an abandoned Star Trek series called 'Planet of the Titans'

I've watched the first three episodes and so far I'd say it's pretty good.

To it's credit, it seems to be off to a faster start than TNG, Voyager, DS9, and Enterprise. All those eventually came up to speed, but came out of the gate slow.

Discovery seems to have some interesting characters and a potentially great story to follow. It will be interesting to see how/if they work their way into the Original Series. Whether they eventually introduce the crew from TOS and the events leading to TOS. Maybe they go down the road of story from the relaunched Star Trek. Who knows. Either way, they have the foundation for something really good.

I was a fan of ENT, so I obviously give a lot of leeway to Star Trek series. Considering that ST has always delivered social allusions as a matter of course, I don't concern myself with the obvious connections it is trying to make.

To me what this series has to show is that it contribute to the lore as much if not more so than the Axanar fan film that it nixed. I haven't seen it yet but that might be because it leans too much on the JJverse style of Trek.

I can't defend Axanar since Alec Peters went and paid himself 41,000 dollars. At that point it was no longer a not for profit fan film and became a movie that was a threat to CBS/Paramount's copyright.

It's why I respect Star Trek Continues...they maintain their not for profit status and even sell adds for CBS and CBS All-Access to stay under CBS/Paramount's radar.

Concur on Peters being unable to keep his hand out of the cookie jar. And I understand CBS position as well and don't fault them using their legal muscles to shut it down. But the concept of Axanar was great IMO. I know it can't be used but DIS needs to start showing some of that promise. It looking good can't be enough. That said most new Sci-Fi series don't really find themselves until 3/5 of the way into year one. So I'm giving it time.

RE: anyone watching the new Star Trek show?
I've only seen the first 2 episodes. I don't like the opening credits. I don't like the excessive Klingon. Plug in the universal translator already. The story has been good. Not as dark as I expected.

I think the personal relationships are there - like when Michael gives Saru a hip-check to so she can use the terminal he is at. A moment later he does the same thing to get the terminal back. At one point Saru explains his race was at one time basically livestock. Odd, considering he is 7-feet tall and weighs 82 pounds.

Another example is when the captain says something like, "Make a note in the log: On this day my senior officers actually agreed." Michael responds with, "Is sarcasm necessary?" The captain replies, "Necessary? No."

I am not a fan of Abrams Star Trek. If you take away the names, does anything in any of his Trek movies remind you of Star Trek? They are good movies, just not Star Trek. A bit OT there but it really bugs me.

I actually liked the Enterprise intro. Being a self-proclaimed history nut, I enjoyed the brief synopsis of travel through the ages.

I get the use of the Klingon. I just feel there is too much of it. I hate to read movies/TV shows. A little goes a long way. That first episode had enough for a 10-year run. It is nice that they pay enough attention to realize it is Klingon to Klingon but they overlook enough other stuff that they can afford to overlook this.

I thought the Abrams movies were good but they did not embody the spirit of Star Trek.

Enterprise is interesting to me because once it became clear the show was being canceled, they started putting out some REALLY good episodes...I mean, episodes like Babel One, United, The Aenar, Affliction, Divergence, In a Mirror Darkly I&II, and Terra Prime...that's what I wanted Enterprise to be all along.

they learned their lesson too late.

Apparently, they may be on the verge of announcing a season 2 for Discovery.

I kinda disagree because I enjoyed Star Trek (2009) and Beyond...They did a good job of casting the roles and showing the Kirk-Spock-Bones relationship. I felt like Pine, Quinto, and Urban nailed their roles but so did Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, and Simon Pegg. That said, while I didn't much care for 'Into Darkness'...it made a crap ton of money (which was what Trek needed)

Agree with you on S3 and S4 of ENT. They were so close to creating a TV canon for the Romulan War. If they had dropped the Suliban arc they would have made have made it IMO.

The other thing was for some reason Scott Bakula just didn't work as CO. I don't if it was the script or his acting style but it simply didn't work for me.

RE: anyone watching the new Star Trek show?
Last episode was a little...mushy I guess would be the right word. Not bad, just a little too emotional for my tastes. The end was pretty groovy, though.

As an aside, is anyone watching The Orville on Fox? That show is not at all what I expected. I went in thinking it would be a "Police Squad" type spoof of Star Trek that would be cute for an episode or two. Instead, it's like Star Trek with better jokes. I'm a fan and would highly recommend giving it a watch if you haven't.

I've been watching The Orville. It's pretty good. I was like you and thought it would be more on the humor side and less on the sci-fi.

If I had to sum it up, I'd say this was a great explanation when I read it.

"It’s one of those shows that you watch, aren’t quite sure why, but keep on watching anyway."

I think their timing is a bit off. I'd like to see the captain develop into that cocky, wise-cracking, love-him-hate-him type that always comes through at the last second. I'm not sure if MacFarlane can pull that off though. I'd also like to see them become the black sheep of the fleet. Some unauthorized engine and weapons mods. Envy of the captains of the big ships. That sort of thing.

yes, they even bring that up in DS9...a great quote from Michael Eddington in 'for the cause'

"You know, in some ways you're even worse than the Borg. At least they tell you about their plans for assimilation. You're more insidious. You assimilate people and they don't even know it."

I'd give episode 4 for a somewhat disappointing 7.2 while I give episode 5 an improved 7.5 (the end mirror scene was very interesting and I liked Mudd)

I'm waiting for that 'breakthrough' episode I can give an 8+ to...maybe it's tonight?

I had completely forgotten about that episode. Great pull!
