On the fake field goal...
I'm glad it didn't work.
Our defense made the stop in the ensuing UCLA possession. Now they can't say we had to resort to "trick plays" to win against a top 25 team.

An UCLA fan told me that it was brilliant even if it didn't worked. By the way, I personally thought that the kicker should have ran for a first down. It was only a few yards...

Yes, he was only a few steps from the first down, he had plenty of room to get there, didn't need to throw it.

RE: On the fake field goal...
I understand the thought. A field goal wouldn't have sealed the game and our kicker already missed an extra point

I wondered the same thing..was hard to tell on TV if he had the angle. I agree with the call, 6 points was no better than 3 with Rosen.

I understand going for it under the circumstances (e.g., our suspect kicking ability and Rosen's arm), but it seemed like an odd play call.

IF he knew how to throw it would have been great. IF he had run for the first down it would have been great. IF the receiver had come back for the ball, it would have been great. I liked it better the way it turned out as our defense quieted some criticism for a minute anyway

RE: On the fake field goal...
Hated both the 3rd down off-tackle preceding the fake field goal and the fake field goal.

Riley was unstoppable and we didn't need much on third down AND had we gotten the first down, pretty much game over. The fake field was so obviously going to be a fake field goal since 3 vs. 6 is pretty much nothing versus Rosen AND we had a first year PK who was/is an adventure on kicks.

Love the fact that we won and that the defense stepped up, but we could've put the game away a bit earlier. GO TIGERS!

RE: On the fake field goal...
That was a terrible call. If you're going to go for it then you might as well put it in the hands of the guy who already had 6 td passes. UCLA had already suspected the fake field goal because some of the players dropped back into pass coverage. That was s true test for the defense though. They stopped one of the most clutch QB's in this season on 4th down to win the game.

I agree...would have rather just gone for it on the 4th down play...it worked out great and I do love coach getting creative, regardless

RE: On the fake field goal...
I was cool with it, in fact I was commenting of all times that would be a great time to run a fake.

FG kicking was suspect and a FG still only made it a 6 point game. UCLA would likely have gotten good field position after the kickoff, as our kickers either would have had to squib it or kick it for a return.

Obviously, if you score, the game is over. If you get the 1st down, the game was damn near over.

My only critique was that they should have just aimed for the 1st down, not the touchdown.

I loved it. The call was gutsy, and just needs more work to execute next time.

Even though it failed, I knew that we were going to win--the vibe energy was there for victory. It was late enough in the game that I could FF to our victory and get the feel it was there.

Scoff if you want...but that's how I roll. lol.

Yes, he was only a few steps from the first down, he had plenty of room to get there, didn't need to throw it.

That's the thing about fake fg passes, fake punt passes, and halfback passes, they throw it 99.99999% of the time and most times they shouldn't.

I wasn't really sure watching on TV, but the question occurred to me about wasn't he close enough to have to have simply ran a few more steps for the 1st and slid before getting clobbered.

I got nervous when we started getting all those penalties . . . taunting for getting in the face and mouthing at the opponent out of bounds, fair catch interference, some other 10 or 15 yard penalty, false starts. I don't think Cal-Los Angeles had a penalty until nearly the end of 1st half.

I'm pretty sure there was a defender there that was in a position to stop him short of the first down.

As for the call itself, I think our kicking game is suspect so actually kicking the FG is low percentage, getting 6 yards for a first down is also low percentage since you pretty much have to throw in that situation and you become one dimensional. Faking the FG is also low percentage but you might have caught them off guard. Glad the defense shut them down so we aren't sitting here saying "what if".

I got mad...but not nervous. lol

That guy's reffing was so off, I knew he'd have to ease up.

Yep. Don't understand putting that on a freshman kicker. I clearly thought we should go for it on 4th, but the fake FG was a terrible decision.
