Tulsa game atmosphere
That was a GREAT crowd (24,239) with probably 90+% staying until the end and actually being pretty engaged in the game! We need that every game!

And the the DJ actually played some decent music to keep the crowd in it and pumped up. None of that Taylor Swift crap they used to play during the games.

RE: Tulsa game atmosphere
Best atmosphere since the Boise State game. Of course, in that one the atmosphere melted away by halftime, whereas this one just kept getting better & better!

It was fantastic to see all those Rocket greats at half-time. Just fantastic.

I don't know if those guys can know what it means for long-time fans to be able to see them.

Made the long drive from Tennessee, and glad I did. The Glass Bowl crowd was awesome. The game was great. No quit in those Rockets.

+1 to all the above posts. Great to see the Glass Bowl as it was tonight, hopefully it will create some momentum to building a larger fan base.

RE: Tulsa game atmosphere
Great crowd who for the most part stuck around to the exciting conclusion and got their money's worth. As many (excluding me) predicted, it was a shootout with the last team with the ball winning. In the first half Woodside and his receivers were about 1 or 2 steps out of sync on several potentially big plays or Woodside would have finished with over 600 passing yards rather than a "mere" 458 yards. After an almost penalty free game 1, the Rockets have bucked the trend (of improving week by week) and have opened the floodgates to penalties-----definitely room for improvement there. Tulsa has a good offense but 51 points is a lot to give up and as we have seen over the past couple of decades, high octane offenses are fun to watch and can win games but in the long run it is defenses that win championships.

Winning games builds fair weather fans, not a fan-base. JMHO. UT HAS won. There's little indication FROM ATTENDANCE that a BASE has been built.

It's atmosphere, fan activities, tradition involvement and representation that builds a visible fan base. The Beckman era coaches have done a great job on representation. AD's office or whomever is charged with marketing the sports and university is missing the boat on the others. Where I have seen success, more non-football attendees wearing UT shirts. UT's association with Detroit pro sports. More kids saying they want to go to UT, though that may correspond to more kids saying they want to go to college.

A nice movement to try and get flags into the communities, on the houses on game day would go a long way towards re-building a base.

UT should OWN Secor and Central and they don't. It should be very clear whose neighborhood you are in as soon as you leave the highway, on any approach to campus, any direction for a mile at least AND downtown streets and businesses. Even EMU has Washtenaw Ave lined with flags. The downtown and the campus-town businesses show great representation, even though only ten minutes from one of the largest programs in the country. UT's AD and marketing offices should at least be able to match EMU/Ypsilanti and they quite honestly should be able to match ANY program in the country for pre-game and in-game activities and traditions. It's not on the fans that the opening scenes of ever tv game show half emptry stands. There's nothing to do in that place before games. No reason to be there. Food sucks, atmosphere sucks.... Easy fix for the not lazy.

Oh, another positive I've noticed. Students filling up,making noise and staying longer.

I presume someone had foresight to get a nice posterizable photo of the UT greats? One of a kind and some of these guys, getting old...

^^^ Agreed ... I've been to Huntington West Va. several times when Marshall was in the MAC .... Their downtown/business district had flags and banners draped everywhere in support of the Herd on gameday ... That town could care less about the proverbial big dog in the state WVU ... It would be nice if more businesses and the city of Toledo would embrace the Rockets on a larger scale ... A lot of it has to do with the extensive osu/um media bias and coverage... 03-banghead

well, technically the defense only gave up 44 points - so they are much better than you thought....

On a serious note, we had several stops where we would have gotten the ball back on downs - but instead decided to give up a 1st down because of a dumb penalty. and when you have a 2nd and 20 and they line up with two wide outs next to each other. Pretty easy to predict they are going to run a crossing pattern and look for the guy that comes open. No need to play the receiver 15 yards off the LOS and give up 17 yards on a route designed to get about 7. Then the next play - give up a touchdown. We still do a lot of stupid things on defense. Did like seeing #42 (Olekanma) in there at linebacker. Did a nice job. Also heard Chris Norwood's name called once, so he is playing.

Anybody know why Skipper wasn't playing? Is he hurt?

Going to disagree, with respect for your opinion and observation. As I pointed out, Ypsi is in the shadow of one of the largest fan bases in the world, yet they manage to support the home team at least with banners, if not butts. Someone is at least trying something new to get those butts in the seats and get their students the respect and fan base they deserve.

OSU/Mich/ND has been the excuse used for decades as to why UT can't build a fan base and it just doesn't hold water. They uni ignored the community for a long time. Those businesses are waiting for an excuse, for someone to say it's in their best interest to support the home team.

There ARE people, kids, looking for a reason to support a local team. OSU, Mich, ND are inaccessible to them by definition. UT has been inaccessible by neglect.

+1....Toledo needs a much stronger branding representation throughout this city, especially in the areas you mentioned.

We have a 3 by 5 flag strung up on top of the no parking sign by our house, a UT rock on our front porch and another Toledo flag on the porch.... Someone wrote us a letter saying the cops would fine us. That was a month ago. It looks like it was put there by the university.... They can frick off. I can throw a rock at UT and I wish more people were as committed to the university as we are.

Btw... The energy around us was by the most hype I have seen since we beat UC or ISU. The best game in the GB i can remember.

I'm not worthy. I have a sticker and some shirts. Michigan to my left and OSU in other directions. I REALLY need to put my ... porch where my mouth is.
