Kill beats Minnesota, then Minnesota hires Kill to be their head coach. Carey beats Nebraska, then Nebraska hires ?. NIU sure gets a lot of people fired.

RE: FIRE CAREY!!!
This is an interesting article about the current state of football offenses. While it's about the NFL, philosophically it relates to college and more specifically Carey and the NIU offense. So while we get on Carey/Uremovich for their ultra conservative pass attack, it's really a trend through out today's game.

It's like playing a safe stock on the stock market. That approach will probably allow you to beat the lesser teams often but have some problems winning consistently against the better teams. It's an approach that won't give you championships but will keep your job. A low risk / low reward stock .

The gist I got was...play safe, play safe, play safe...and when th chance is there, your QB has to make a big play. That's almost exactly how Nebraska played out. The problem is, if he doesn't make that play you're screwed. I think Santa will be allowed to do more and more soon, but not next week. I'm guessing a big commit to the run game from us.

That strategy works if your defense is dominant. The margin of error becomes so so so small though and imo you just can't win consistently that way, at least not unless you have a schedule filled with cupcakes up and down. NIU won't get away with hiding the offense for 3.5 quarters at SDSU.

Current events make that seem so remote, not really complaining, but, we know what the teams will be like with Carey. Middle of the road and slightly better than MAC average teams. Not as good as the Kill/Doeren years. Kill and Doeren went on to much bigger programs and big money, I just don't see Carey being in demand like that, meaning no one else sees high value in him.
If you compare to Doeren, I would agree Carey (and maybe any coach) isn't going to match up to that.
Kill? I'm not so sure, go back and look at those teams.
Doeren rode the coattails of Coach Kill. He hasn't had a winning conference record at NC State yet.
Year Overall Conference
2013 3 - 9 0 - 8
2014 8 - 5 3 - 5
2015 7 - 6 3 - 5
2016 7 - 6 3 - 5
2017 2 - 1 0 - 0
LOL
For NC State standards, what Doeren has done has been pretty darn good with staying competitive. Also, you do realize that NC State is in the same division of the ACC at Clemson, FSU, and Louisville right? ANY P5 school comparable to NC State would go 0-3 against those teams year in and year out.
But yeah, Doeren rode the coattails of Kill.
Why hire someone not good enough to compete with top competition? 9 - 23 is .281. This is "pretty darn good with staying competitive"?
I personally liked Doeren as our coach, but Kill was competitive and successful wherever he went

RE: FIRE CAREY!!!
MD, do you invest in the stock market? Safe stocks usually rise. Look at Apple, Disney, 3M, etc.
Please let me know of any high risk stocks you're pursuing. I'd like to avoid another 2000 tech bubble.
The stats behind people investing in a majority of high risk companies is not keen on returns. Yes, there are anomalies.
As it relates to football, it's frustrating to see this play in non MAC games. NIU steps on the throttle offensively in the MAC, it's hard to deny the results.
If you toss the Boise game. NIU stuck to its normal MAC self and lost to Marshall, FSU, and Utah State. When they played a different style offensively to eliminate the likelihood of more mistakes on more snaps, they've gone 4-1 vs. B1G and had narrow defeats to BC.
You can go high pace when you have more talent. When you are playing a team that can control the clock, you have to make offensive snaps count. Now they haven't often performed well, the end result is often what they wanted.

Being brutally honest, NIU should be 3-0 combined in the OSU and BC games. Those games were handed away on silver platter. Right now, I don't think NIU has the offense/offensive mindset/offensive coaching philosophy to hang with a SDSU/Toledo/or even WMU for that matter. I hope I'm proven wrong, but I just do not know if we can count on the defense to score 2 or 3 times a game which is what would be needed with the current state of the offense. Its just a little frustrating to me because as you saw on the 1 drive where NIU attempted to score, they were able to march right down the field. I don't think NIU needs to be in full training wheel mode with the offense, yes it is not as talented as last year's group but there is talent. I was thinking earlier today, the success at Nebraska could have one negative impact in that it will reinforce the conservative offensive tendencies. I don't mean to detract from the Nebraska win because it was a big big win, but when you look at it objectively, Nebraska is about a 60th ranked team in FBS right now. The recipe to beat teams in the notch to two notches above Nebraska with teams like SDSU, Toledo, and WMU will require the offense to operate at a high level

EXACTLEY! I've been at both bowl games in San Diego and we've been squashed in both. I hope for better, but expect the same.

Actually it has been 3 bowl losses in San Diego. TCU, Utah State, and Boise. The Utah State game was close but the other two were embarrassing.

2006 TCU 37 NIU 7 niu had a negative 20 yards rushing (garrett wolfe)
2013 Utah State 21 NIU 14 (jordan lynch and jimmie ward)
2015 Boise State 55 NIU 7 the one we want to forget ever happened
2017????? 4th times the charm?????

RE: FIRE CAREY!!!
I'm hopeful that Huff's presence will give the coaches enough confidence to take more shots. We took plenty of shots against BC but Graham couldn't hit the open receivers running all over the field. If we get those opportunities against SDSU I'm confident Santa will make enough plays to pull off the upset if our defense plays up to its standard. If we curl up in a ball on offense like we did against Nebraska we will not have a shot to win. Who knows, maybe Graham and Jones will re-emerge and we will open up the offense big time!

I skipped the Utah State debacle. Instead, I got increasingly intoxicated at my sister's house in the Denver area over Christmas.

2013 @Iowa - Beat a B1G team on the road
2013 @Purdue - First MAC team to beat 2 B1G teams in same year
2014 @Northwestern - Beat a B1G team on the road.
2014 Toledo - MAC West tiebreaker
2014 @WMU - MAC West tiebreaker
2014 MACC vs BGSU - Blowout in MACC
2015 @#20 Toledo - Beat a ranked Toledo team on the road, MAC West tiebreaker
2015 WMU - MAC West tiebreaker
Now granted he can't win a bowl game and is 1-2 in MACCs. But to say he can't win big games seems unfair.
Not to nit-pick, but that is not the first time that happened.
In the same regular season, yes it was.
Didn't say regular season, it said year. BG beat 2 B10 teams in 2003.
