Funny & annoying. I've lived in GA for 30+ yrs now after growing up in Memphis & still have a hard time finding real BBQ around ATL.

Likely means GA St won't be playing AAC schools in the future which is probably good for the GA St record. But this approach likely shows the difficulty GA St has with funding the FB program. After all, they don't sell many tickets & the state of GA has restricted the amount they can extort from students in activity fees - makes them look pretty desperate.
It's a press release. Good grief. It's not the Zapruder film. No hidden meaning. And the release is for our fanbase and Atlantans who were looking forward to this game. Ok, I'll buy your explanation. But even then, do you not acknowledge the distinct difference in tone between the 2 statements?

I wanted to play Ga State, because I live near Atlanta, but my first impression is the GSU statement was whiny, even without reading UMass'. I mean, any reasonable person understands why Memphis and UCF want and need to play this game. Not to mention, you got paid $1.1M not to play. So nobody much is going to be sympathetic.

Has happened to us on a regular basis, as well. Arkansas and TN owe us a FB game each that they were contractually obligated to play and never paid us a penny. They just kept moving the year back. Missouri is now doing the same thing. It's strictly b/c we got a lot better and they don't want to risk the loss. Ole Miss dumped us for the same reason. They just didn't screw us out of a game.

Our reason was much more legit. Sorry, sincerely, but your admin should man up and deal with it.
We play Memphis in 2023 in Atlanta. It's over. Moving along...

Yeah, seems to me the easiest thing for Georgia State would have been taking on Maine (UCF's opponent) and maybe getting a win. I'm sure they'll manage to eek one out at some point this year, but losing to Tennessee State is pretty rough.

Then rescheduling Memphis for a future year, and then maybe getting UCF to agree to a 1-1. That seems like a win-win for all parties, but Georgia State decided to be petulant it seems.
Best thing now is to leave it open and play 11. Nobody in Atlanta is coming to a game against Maine.

My thoughts exactly. I don't get any negative feeling when reading the memo from the AD. I feel like any AD in the country would be upset that a home game had to be canceled, especially with 2 weeks to go before the game.

It's not the same situation that USF/UMASS find themselves in, so the tone of their memo of course will be different.

We have not been around long. This was arguably are biggest OOC home game ever (some would argue for Air Force). It was also spirit day and band alumni and local hs band members were coming down to join our band. So I can see where the administration felt the need to let folks in the fanbase know that they didn't take the money and run as a first option.

I could slather ketchup on some pork ribs and sear them over a 500 degree grill for 45 minutes.... That don't make it BBQ.

From the Georgia State website (LINK):

Quote:Memphis has cancelled its Sept. 30 game at Georgia State as part of a schedule reshuffling orchestrated by the American Athletic Conference involving seven of its teams.

Despite the existing contract between Memphis and Georgia State, the AAC rescheduled the Memphis-UCF game for Sept. 30 after their Sept. 9 contest was postponed by Hurricane Irma.

Per the contract, Georgia State will receive $1.1 million in cancellation fees and expenses.

Georgia State Director of Athletics Charlie Cobb said he is exploring all options for a replacement game this season.

We are disappointed for our fans and our football program with the cancellation of this game, but it is beyond our control,” Cobb said. “All we can do is search for a suitable replacement, preferably a home FBS game this season.”

From the UMass website (LINK):

Quote:University of Massachusetts football agreed Thursday to accommodate a Hurricane Irma-related scheduling change request made by the American Athletic Conference (AAC) and the University of South Florida (USF) and postponed the teams' planned meeting at USF in Tampa, Florida, on Sat., Oct. 14, 2017. Additionally, UMass and Florida International University (FIU) have agreed in principle to play a game at FIU in Miami, Florida, on Sat., Dec. 2, 2017.

UMass and USF will complete the postponed contest at USF on a to-be-determined date during the 2022 or 2023 seasons. The UMass-USF game in Massachusetts slated for the 2018 season remains unaffected by these scheduling changes.

The UMass-FIU contest on Dec. 2, 2017 will be the 12th for both teams, as FIU previously cancelled its game against Indiana, originally slated for Sat., Sept. 16, 2017. FIU will return to UMass during the 2020 season on a to-be-determined date. Should FIU qualify for the C-USA Championship Game on Sat., Dec. 2, the 2017 UMass-FIU meeting will not be played. In this scenario, the 2020 UMass-FIU game is unaffected and UMass will travel to FIU during a future season following the 2020 meeting.

I think its's a bad look for Georgia State, while UMass clearly values their relationship with the AAC.

Georgia State is already in a conference while UMASS is dying to get into the AAC. The move by UMASS to accommodate the AAC is a plus for their future game plan to join the AAC. Surprised that Georgia State and UMASS didn't hook up like the FIU move but maybe FIU beat them to the punch. Aren't there other schools that are missing a game from the recent hurricanes that they can hook up with maybe on DEC 2nd like the UMASS and FIU. In that case they get the 1.1 million and still possibly get 12 games for the season. Be creative like UMASS and FIU. 07-coffee3

People will come even if you only get a couple of thousand. Play Maine if you can or if UCF if you can and try to fill out the schedule. Georgia State already has $1.1 million dollars in their bank account for the previous cancellation. 03-2thumbsup

I wasn't on the phone yesterday but me things someone ticked Charlie off.

There are a lot of folks who are not diehards buying tickets out of curiosity and to see the stadium. This was one of the main games because its a close by recognizable opponent. No need to read anything else into it. As for future games with AAC opponents we don't have many Football openings and nobody wants to return a game with our MBB team anyway. But ultimately when scheduling business is business.
