Luke Fickell Press Conference 9-12-17
Coach Fickell Press Conference. Some highlights:

-Talked about rivalries. Game is not about who is better, it’s about preparation and practice. Also heart and soul.
-- Has studied up on Victory Bell. Has learned from Gino, Doug and Bujnoch.
-QB position: Said a very good chance Ross will be a viable option this week and moving forward. Hayden is our starter. Ross needs to knock off rust for being out 4 weeks.
- Plan in place for Doaks. This was first week he was able to get in and do things for us. His play will continue to increase as his health gets better.
- Boone twisted his ankle on last play of Michigan. We’ll see how he does this week.
- Place Kicking Game: Still will have guys compete this week. It will make us and them better. Gantz has a sore groin but it will not stop him from competing.
-Admits that growing up in Columbus he didn’t know or hear much about this rivalry.

If football people 100 miles away never heard of it, it is not much of a rivalry.

Thanks for the synopsis, I don't have time to listen to the press conference at work.

Well at least it was all black this time. And a hundred miles up I-71 they don't know or care about any other football in the state.

Glad to hear Trail is going to get a shot going forward. Hayden has just been really bad. Although if things at camp were that close, not sure how much of an improvement he brings.

Well, technically, it looked more charcoal gray to me...

Can't understand why they don't mic the reporters at these pressers. Drives me nuts.

And block for himself, do kickoffs, and manage the clock/timeouts.

Take away the drops and Moore was not nearly as bad as his stats. I do not count the last garbage time pick six. The first one was ugly though.

Do we have a rivalry with Miami? Serious question.

Considering Columbus State folks only care about one team, I am not surprised. He probably never heard of Bama/Auburn either.

not really

we passed them a loooong time ago

its just an annual easy/cheap fbs game now

the new schedule only has us in Oxford like 3 times in 12 years or some such...they are darn lucky they got that much

I bet they don't draw 14k a game now....they should go FCS as should most of the MAC

RE: Luke Fickell Press Conference 9-12-17
Not to sidetrack this thread but our former coach always seemed to suggest that the close scores in recent years were because it was a rivalry. But I don't recall him emphasizing preparation for a rivalry game the way Fickell did when opening this press conference. We should be encouraged by that since it would appear the former staff assumed more talent, size and speed would carry the day against an inferior opponent. When play began, I think they were surprised by Miami's intensity and desire the past four years. A play here or there and UC would be 2-2 during those dark days.

Reading between the lines, I wonder if Boone will play at all? Doaks and Warren both show great promise and all will be needed over the course of the season.

I don't understand what is wrong with only caring about one team... I only care about one team, and I refuse to watch SEC football.

I'm starting to think that this is going to become a 2008 type season with Ramsey/Goebel/Pead as Boone/Doaks/Warren. I'd be shocked if any of those guys get above 600-700 yards this year...but it will definitely lay an extremely strong footprint for the future with those two.

Definitely could see that. I see a lot of similarities between the two backfields, with three guys who can tote the rock, catch out of the backfield and contribute on special teams. They might only get 600-700 yards carrying the ball, but I anticipate Boone and Doaks will capture another 300-400 yards catching the ball as well.
