RE: Traveling Fan Base Question
That's a tough question. I would say in the past definitely EMU since their fan base was about 3,000. However they are turning the program around so that should change. But probably the worst would be Ball State and the best would either be Toledo or Ohio?

RE: Traveling Fan Base Question
Just for football? Or are we talking as a sports program as a whole?

RE: Traveling Fan Base Question
All depends on time and place imo, how OU fans traveled twenty years ago except of maybe the Miami game? Meanwhile, I recall EMU Steve posting an article about how thousands of Huron fans in the late eighties would travel to Toledo or the directional Michigan schools. Miami doesn't exactly set the world on fire now, but brought something around to 8K in 2003 against Northwestern. But if we're talking about today, then it's probably OU and Toledo.

Yes, that is true about the way EMU was. When EMU was flying high around 1987 the fan base traveled.
That isn't the case any more.
One thing to remember now is that all MAC (conference and OOC) home games are on at least ESPN3.
No longer do fans need to travel say 150 miles to see a game live.

WMU shattered the record for attendance at the MAC championship game. Doubled the previous record. That's all I have to say on the topic.

Indeed, but that was also a historic year for WMU. If we are talking recently, CMU holds the biggest "Detroit" bowl game crows at 60K and 54K.
On average I would say a school like Toledo travels well because they are located neutrally.

Yeah but caveat that with that place being in your backyard in Detroit. NIU fans aren't going to Detroit on a Thursday or Friday. All of the Ohio schools can travel to each other easily. NIU, Buffalo, and Ball State fans aren't going to travel to many Tuesday night games.

RE: Traveling Fan Base Question
Teams traveling to Toledo.... NIU and BG for obvious reasons. CMU does a nice job for basketball IMO.
Judging on Bowl games on TV? Ohio does a great job at sitting together and making themselves heard.
As far as teams in Detroit for the MAC? Well WMU had a different set of circumstances than most teams in that game...(access bowl on the line, first title game since 2000.) I bet Toledo would rock Ford field if we got there. Only an hour away... It's been a while since we've represented the West also (2004).
I want to say CMU has the largest overall fan base? I don't know why I want to say that? 2nd most students right?
Kent has a large one as well (that's a LOUD !!NOT!! FOR FOOTBALL).
Toledo has been top 30 in NCAA attendance in women's basketball for 20 straight years. Fell out of top 25 last season with the emergence of some old powers. Ironically we won the MAC and worked a 10 seed in the NCAA's.

While I do think Toledo's attendance was not close to where it should have been, I think FIU brought only like 300 people... What did we have for that game, 35,000?

32 and change.... Bitter cold (still a long walk). Hardly any locals. We brought 20k. FIU had 300 tix sold. Rest were company and sponserships that dont care but still rooting for the MAC rep.

Way out here in DeKalb we don't see very many fans from any of the teams, MAC or otherwise. There are some of course, but no one school sticks out.

That was also MTSU's first bowl game after becoming an FBS team.

As a WMU fan, I will admit CMU does seem to have a bigger overall fan base then WMU. I live in GR and CMU seems to have a bigger grasp on this city then we do. Helps that - outside of last season - CMU's had the better recent history, more MAC Championships, more bowl game wins, and regularly gets Power 5 wins.

Not sure if that was sarcasm, but MTSU has developed into a solid FBS G5 team.
