UC Soccer Thread: #21 (Composite) Women beat Tulsa, now 11-1-2 (4-0-1)
EDIT/THREAD UPDATE:

Quote:Goins Nets Game-Winner to Send #21 UC to 3-2 Win over Tulsa

Bearcats had to hang on after opening with a 2-0 lead

CINCINNATI - Sydney Goins scored her first goal of the year while Jill Vetere and Sophie Gorman each added goals as well to lead the #21 University of Cincinnati women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over visiting Tulsa Thursday night at Gettler Stadium. The win pushed the Bearcats' record to 11-1-2 on the year following their fifth win in a row while raising their American Athletic Conference record to 4-0-1. The Golden Hurricane fell to 3-11-3 on the year and 1-5-1 in league play.

// QUICK NOTES
• The Bearcats moved to 11-1-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the American while Tulsa slipped to 3-11-3 overall and 1-5-1 in the league
• Cincinnati improved to 5-2-0 all-time against the Golden Hurricane and 4-0-0 when the match is played in Cincinnati
• Sydney Goins scored her first goal of the year, second of her career and her first game-winner with her strike in the 75'
• Jill Vetere opened the scoring for her third of the year to move into a tie for the team lead in goals scored before Sophie Gorman hit home her fourth of the year later in the match to take the team lead
• Karli Royer assisted on Gorman's goal for the first helper in her career
• The Tulsa penalty kick goal at 71:59 ended UC's shutout streak at 588:22 with the previous score allowed to LSU at 43:37 in the team's match on September 14 in Baton Rouge
• UC out-shot Tulsa, 36-3, on the night and held a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks

// FIRST HALF
The Bearcats led, 1-0, at the break with Vetere netting the lone goal in the opening 45 minutes. In the 24', the Bearcats were deep in Tulsa territory when Taylor Pavlika sent a shot on goal that caromed off the cross bar and back into play. Gorman was there to corral the ball and made a move toward the end line where she crossed the ball back into the box. There, Vetere rushed in and deflected the cross into the net for the 1-0 lead and her second goal in as many matches.

UC had plenty of chances in the stanza as it held an 18-1 advantage in shots. TU's Courtney McKeon made five saves in the frame to keep the Bearcats from doing more damage.

// SECOND HALF
In the second half, the Bearcats came out firing once and again and extended their lead to 2-0 in the 50' as Gorman grabbed the team lead with her fourth of the year. UC drove in deep down the flank and after a pass was knocked down by the defense, Vetere was there to send the ball across the field to Karli Royer. The rookie moved into the area and fired a cross into the box where Gorman ran under it and headed it home for the 2-0 lead. The assist was Royer's first of her collegiate career.

In the 72', the Golden Hurricane pulled one back as they were awarded a penalty kick. Rachel Thun-Blankenship took the spot kick and sent it into the back of the net to not only cut the UC lead in half, but also end a pair of streaks the Bearcats defense held. The goal was the first allowed by UC in conference play this year and also ended a scoreless streak of 588:22 dating back to September 14 when LSU scored at 43:37 in the first half of a 1-0 win.

Despite the goal, the Bearcats responded quickly as Goins grabbed her first of the year at 74:52 for a 3-1 lead. UC carried the ball down the left side where Tiffany Huber sent cut a pass back toward the top of the box. From there, Julie Gavorski tipped the pass down to Goins' feet where she ripped a shot into the upper portion of the goal for her first career game-winner. Her score became the game-winner after Tulsa scored its second goal just 23 seconds later to make for a close finish to the match.

Overall, UC out-shot Tulsa, 36-3. Madison Less, who earned her fifth win of the year, did not have a save in the match while McKeon recorded 10 saves overall.

// NEXT MATCH
The Bearcats return to their home pitch Sunday at 1 p.m. as they will play host to Memphis. The Bearcats will wear pink for the match in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and ask fans to join them in wearing pink to Gettler Stadium.

RE: Women's Soccer Remains Undefeated, beating Purdue 2-1
I don't care to spectate soccer, but have been extremely proud of our women's soccer program. Their coach, IMO, has proven to be the best coach of their respective sport in our athletic department. CLF may prove to be better, but 2 games is not nearly enough to make a determination.

Have you heard about the UC men's basketball program? Eight (8) consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament. Coached by this short guy. Name is Cronin.

Congrats to the Women's Soccer team! With this win, I believe they may have cracked the top 25.

Last poll was last Tuesday and they were ranked #34, but 5 teams in front lost and Purdue was also receiving votes. Very good chance they could be in the Top 25...and I believe that would be a first.

I don't know enough about women's soccer or the UC program specifically to have a strong opinion on this, but Mick Cronin coaches a top 10-15 program (historically) that had 14 consecutive NCAA bids until the 1 NIT bid just prior to his arrival. Sometimes weight should be given to how tough the job is. It's why I really value what Gary Patterson does at TCU... not a historic power and yet continues to compete in a big way, whether in the WAC, CUSA, Mountain West or the Big 12.

The fact that Mick has taken over one of the top basketball programs of all time kind of proves my point. Our women's soccer team has been built from absolutely nothing into a nearly top 25 team. I'm not certain, but didn't they only recently reinstate full ride scholarships? Sure, when Mick got here our basketball had been in the dumps for a year, but we still have tons of history.

This same concept is seen all the time in other top football and basketball programs... A coach has a terrible run, but the right coach can come in and turn things around very quickly due in large part to history. It's much easier to rebuild a top program than to build one from nothing.

If we had the basketball history of USF or ECU and Mick built the same team he has now, I would be the first to proclaim he is the best coach on campus. Right now, I personally see him as a relatively close second to Neil Stafford.

Agree with Mark and TubaCat here. We aren't comparing apples and oranges here. Men's basketball should be in the tournament every year given its resources.

To throw another dagger at there, women's soccer has won a conference championship...

UC should have good Women's soccer with this area having had for years strong women's youth programs. Just like men's FB if you can recruit local you can be good.

On the flipside, the men's team isn't doing so hot. They did however tie Xavier and just last night beat a 13th ranked UK team. So mixed bag for those guys.

Any way to stream the LSU match?

Not entirely sure, they have the video preview up and the GoBearcats stream site...but I don't believe they would have the rights to stream that game. LSU may provide one?

Also, Cincinnati was just ranked #19 nationally in the newest weekly poll.

Thanks! And thanks for that update! I was wondering when the rankings would come out. I might take the wife to one of the next home games, it'd be nice to pack Gettler for the girls.

I'm not sure how tying Xavier and beating the 13th ranked team would constitute not so hot. Xavier won a few NCAA tourney games two years ago, and any win against a ranked team is great. Nice to see the soccer program at UC on the upswing......

I wasn't trying to sound too negative, I should've checked their record, but last I did see they were like 2-2-1. But that might've been before UK. I guess I meant "not AS hot".

I regularly check in on the both teams as my two kids play very high level soccer. My son has a minor interest in UC so here's hoping...

Anyway, check out some interviews with coach Neal Safford. He has a great straight-forward demeanor to which the girls respond well. I think he's getting a lot out of the level of talent he has.

Thought we finally had baseball going too with Coach Neal. Hopefully Googins can hit the ground running.

I was listening to the OhVarsity podcast yesterday and a great point was brought up. If you ever watch the post-game press conferences of the two revenue sports the coaches only speak with the UC backdrop in the back. The coaches of the rest of the sports conduct their interviews on the field right after the game. Stafford insisted he would only conduct post game interviews with the UC backdrop because he wants to convey how serious they take their sport. I think that is awesome on his part.

I heard Stafford speak at a UC event last year and I was extremely impressed with what he was doing competitively along with his emphasis on academics. Easy for me to say, but I believe UC should find the resources necessary to keep at least one rising star coach in a non-revenue sport in Clifton. I don't expect all the men's and women's non-revenue programs to win the conference every year but if women's soccer, for instance, became a dominant program in the AAC and established a national reputation it would only enhance the University's overall profile when P5 conferences start window shopping again.
