RE: Game Day: Rutgers
I know I'm really late to the party but I don't think I could stop beaming the entire evening on Saturday after the game. I unfortunately haven't had the opportunity to watch either of the games live but I did get to listen to the Rutgers game on Sirius XM through the eyes of the Rutgers broadcast. Needless to say that was quite funny as their analyst kept mixing up rules from the NFL and College Football. It is so nice to have a completely legit defense as having a legit defense will keep us in every single game this year if they play up to par.

Before the game I just had a good feeling about this one because of one simple reason. Eastern in their first game was able to play at home against a Charlotte team that they could beat playing vanilla versus Rutgers right off the bat playing at home against a top level Washington program. They were going to just naturally throw more of their attention to that and then ultimately playing EMU the following week was definitely a bit of a let down from that emotional standpoint. Not to mention too my uncle has always brought up a good point. Generally when a smaller school plays a Power 5 team that game is going to take more out of you physically putting you a bit behind the 8 ball for that next game. This is why I appreciate the fact that we have a bye this coming week. Regroup and reload.

Now obviously being here in Louisville, having gotten a Master's Degree from the University of Louisville, would I from an extremely selfish standpoint mind if the Eagles put all of their eggs into that UK game and pulled off a massive upset? Of course not. Especially considering the fact that my wife and I are going to that game in Lexington. However, I know this coaching staff is much wiser than that and they will have a solid game plan for Ohio. I'll admit it's an important game because you lose to Ohio, you could be staring 3 losses in a row in the face and that early momentum could start to disappear. However, I think if you asked most EMU fans if they would be happy with 2-1 with the 3 games that we had to start the season, I don't think many would say it's the end of the world.

Again though, keep beaming through the bye week and Go Green!

This has nothing to do with the Rutgers game unless a certain player would have signed with us.

Look for "Eastern Michigan" in the article. Interesting read...

Man, what football team wouldn't want him (Phililips).

BTW, if my calendar is correct, he would have been recruited by English (or the time English was being let go) and back then the program was faltering.

Philip's a game changer! We can not kick to him or pass in his direction......

Absolutely. Kick the ball out of bounds and let them start at the 35 instead of letting them start by kicking the PAT.

I'm a fan of the squib. Make a big guy, or someone who isn't quite used to having the ball in his hands, try to return it. But definitely have Brogan punt that game (even though Phillips will still be on the field) and just hope he can keep it away from the speedster. Can't wait for that kid to graduate.

Agree. What you suggest has a good cost/benefit ratio.

They may get the ball at say the 30 - 40 yard line BUT

1). No long run.

2). Always a chance that a fumble, etc. occurs

I would be glad to kick it out of bounds and let them have it at the 35. After all, 35 is only 10 yards beyond the 25 and it neutralizes WMU's top threat to go all the way...

Ten yards of field position is not too much to pay to kept the ball out of Philips' hands.

RE: Game Day: Rutgers
Dear Friends,
I just went on the Rutgers football site, to see if there were final comments about Eastern. Sure enough there is a four minute discussion with sports writers from New Jersey that gave Eastern no credit at all for their win, but at the end of the discussion claimed that in no way was Eastern better than Rutgers. What hubris.... just Big Ten superiority of course.

Let's all go log in and mock them! 03-lmfao

What happened was very simple. They thought they'd bully us on both the OLine and DLine. Our OLine didn't do much for our ground game, but they at least didn't give up 5 or 6 sacks. Our DLine took them on straight up, and beat them physically across the board. We weren't doing any crazy blitzes or stunts or anything of that sort. Just played our base defense and beat their as*es!

I think we should offer them a home and home deal.

Keep a good thing going.

He should have been embarrassed. Not because he lost to EMU but because his team played like sh!t.

Indeed. His team did not play well.

I watched some excellent football games yesterday and EMU/Rutgers was not in that category.

We'll take a win which, in part, because of the lack of offense seemed somewhat ugly. But winning ugly with a very good defense is fine.

That said, I watched the Toledo/Tulsa game and that was great to watch. Very entertaining.

I don't see it as a big deal. If I was a coach at a P5 school, I would be embarrassed if I lost to a MAC team too. Their players SHOULD be bigger, faster, and stronger than ours, but they weren't. It's more of an indictment on the state of the football program at Rutgers than anything else.

We played like crap on offense and still beat a P5 team...I can't stop thinking about that. I'm sure all of us remember a time where, if we played poorly in even one facet of the game, we would get blown out. We've come a long way under Creighton, and everyone should be incredibly proud of the Rutgers win. On the same note, I can completely understand the Rutgers fans/players/coaches being embarrassed about the loss. It would be the same if we lost to an FCS school...we should expect better.

Agreed, for the most part. I think entertainment is in the eye of the beholder. A 54-51 game probably would irritate me, since it's evident that both defenses played poorly.

Our 16-13 game absolutely featured some offensive incompetence, but we made some impressive plays defensively. It's easy to point out Harris's sack or Hoying's INT, but I remember a play where Rutgers threw an out route on 3rd and short, and Juan Giraldo came out of nowhere to blow up the receiver as soon as he caught it to force a punt. Our defense played with swagger and confidence for most of the game, and considering how rarely that happened in the past, I was VERY entertained.
