RE: Wrestling 2017-2018
Big caveat: Two of the three wins were against smaller schools and are not necessarily indicative of how we will fare against D1 opponents. The win over Utah Valley, however, was a good win and hopefully is a sign of how the season will be an improvement over last year’s debacle.

125 Bardezbain is a high risk, high reward wrestler. He can score lots of points, but his defense can suffer as a result. He won’t be boring to watch.
133 Tutolo is a hammer on top and a complete wrestler. He effectively used his legs to make life very difficult for his opponents trapped on bottom.
141 Rooney demonstrated that he’s stronger than last year, utilizing an effective front headlock to score. He was also more aggressive and wrestled like a 4-time HS place winner. Driscoll wrestled against Mercyhurst and had a tough time against a true freshman that wrestled at Woodridge while in high school. I think Rooney has the edge.
149 Monico is solid for a RS freshman, going 3-0.
157 Sparkman will be another fun wrestler to watch. Along with 3 tech falls, he had a dirty throw that had the KSU reserves buzzing.
165 Bast looked better than last year going 2-1.
174 Barreiro went 3-0 and showed an edge that wasn’t what you typically see from a RS freshman.
184 Mast struggled against his Lake Erie opponent, which isn’t a good sign. He’s the only wrestler that went 1-2.
197 Suglio looked very good with an effective tilt that his opponents couldn’t stop. 2 tech falls and a pin are what you’d expect from a 5th year senior.
285 Nye went 2-1 but struggled against Lake Erie.

184 and 285 seem to remain the question marks.

Any idea why Tutolo forfeited. Did they just decide not to wrestle him or is he banged up?

Good question. My personal opinion is that the coaching staff has pushed injured wrestlers in prior years without benefit (Ian Miller, for example) and are taking a more cautious approach this year. Rooney sat instead of wrestling for 3rd, Tutolo didn’t wrestle at all, and Monico sat out after losing his first match. The season is a marathon, not a sprint, so what’s the point of aggravating something minor during meaningless competition?

A couple of wins today. Beat Virginia 20-18 and then Hofstra 26-12. In both matches we forfeited at 125 and we’re able to overcome it. Two OT wins against Virginia were the difference.

Even with 2 forfeits at 125, we beat Hofstra and had a nice win against Virginia. Nye came though with a big win at 285 to top Virginia. True freshman Colin McCracken has taken over at 184 and had 2 wins. What a difference a year makes.

Why did KSU forfeit @ 125lbs in both matches? Seems crazy when they have 3 capable wrestlers at that weight this season.

Team looks much better than year already. The only questions that remain

Will it be Suglio or Conel @ 197lbs?
Will Devin Nye ever become more than a .500 wrestler?

Bardezbain wrestled on Sunday in the individual tournament so he was healthy. Maybe as Lambert said above they are just being careful early in the year.

Our early signing class doesn’t have a state title between the four of them. With one season remaining, hopefully they can build upon their multiple state placements.

Outside of the NCAA Tournament, this is the toughest competition we will see during the year. With 14 ranked teams, 3 of which are in the top 10, CK is an early season test of where we stand. I’m not sure what’s going on with Suglio and Conel at 197 as neither are in the lineup. I really think Coach A has reversed his strategy of putting his wrestlers through a grueling schedule.

Not so good. I think we’re better than last year but probably not by that much. Anxious to see how we do against Buffalo Sunday.

RE: Wrestling 2017-2018
Yeah, I think they are a lot better than last year. Bardezbain and Conel are upgrades @ 125lbs & 197lbs. Rooney & Monico have been a pleasant surprises @ 141lbs & 149lbs. Bast has been another disappointment @ 165lbs, not sure if he can be an above .500 wrestler @ 165lbs? Will Barreiro & McCracken hit the proverbial true freshmen wall in January, February, or March? Sparkman & Tutolo are consistent as usual.

In the match vs Buffalo, Nye has a tough matchup with the defending MAC Champion @ HWT, Jake Gunning. Can Tutolo get revenge vs Lantry @ 133lbs?

Kent State (6-1) opens up Mid-American Conference competition Sunday (Dec. 10) at the M.A.C. Center, hosting Buffalo (2-2, 1-0 MAC). The Golden Flashes look to improve to 3-0 in home duals this season.

A free video stream can be seen on Boxcast. Live audio with Matt Miller can be heard on the Golden Flashes channel on iHeartRadio. Live scoring updates can be seen on TrackWrestling

Tentative Matchups
125: Will Bardezbain (12-6) vs. Kyle Akins (3-1) or Justin Patrick (4-3)
133: Anthony Tutolo (14-6) vs. No. 17 Bryan Lantry (2-2)
141: Tim Rooney (15-5) or Chance Driscoll (5-6) vs. Blake Retell (0-2)
149: Nick Monico (15-6) vs. Jason Estevez (2-2) or Nick Palumbo (1-2)
157: Casey Sparkman (14-7) vs. Kobe Garrehy (1-1) or Eric Fasanct (2-3)
165: Isaac Bast (8-9) vs. Noah Grover (2-2) or Derek Holcomb (2-2)
174: Dylan Barreiro (14-9) vs. Ryan Kromer (0-0) or Austin Weigel (6-4)
184: Colin McCracken (6-9) vs. Brett Perry (3-3)
197: No. 19 Kyle Conel (8-2) vs. Joe Ariola (4-4)
285: Devin Nye (14-10) vs. Jake Gunning (3-1)

Buffalo won 7-of-10 matches in a 27-9 victory over Ohio on Nov. 25. The Bulls' weekend begins with a Friday night home dual against Michigan State.

History vs. Buffalo
Kent State leads the all-time series with Buffalo 25-8 and has won 12 of the last 13 meetings. The Golden Flashes have won the last six meetings in Kent and defeated the Bulls 28-3 the last time the teams met at the M.A.C. Center (Dec. 13, 2015).
Last season, The Bulls snapped the Flashes' series winning streak with 23-12 victory in Buffalo. Returning winners for the Flashes include Devin Nye and Chance Driscoll. Kyle Akins and Bryan Lantry both won for the Bulls last year at 125 and 133.

Our early signing class doesn’t have a state title between the four of them. With one season remaining, hopefully they can build upon their multiple state placements.

Looks like a better class than I thought it was after looking at the comments/rankings from Matt Hill.

Four high school seniors recently signed National Letters of Intent to join Kent State's wrestling team for the 2018-19 season. The early signing period class includes Caleb Brooks (Circleville, Ohio), Brady Chrisman (Medina, Ohio), Tim Wallace (Uniontown, Pa.) and Stone Day (Germantown, Ohio).

"This a good, solid, hard-working group and a solid investment in the future of Kent State wrestling," said Associate Head Coach Matt Hill.

Brooks is a three-time state place winner in Ohio, expected to compete at 133 or 141 for the Golden Flashes. Last March, he finished third in Division II state tournament for Circleville High School, while competing at 120 pounds. As a sophomore Brooks was a Dispatch All-Metro First Team selection.

"Caleb is tall, fast and scrappy," Hill said. "He'll be looking to win a state title this year."

Chrisman placed fifth at the state championships this past season for Medina High School. He is expected to compete at 165 for the Flashes. In February, Chrisman won a 152-pound title at the Greater Cleveland Conference Tournament. He is a three-time place winner at NHSCA Nationals.

"Brady's a very smart wrestler and smart academically too," Hill said. "He has a huge upside. Every coach in the area has told us we have a really good one in Brady. I saw him wrestle at Super 32. His only losses were to Top 10 guys and he wrestled both of them really well."

Wallace is the lone Pennsylvania native in the group, coming from Albert Gallatin High School. He placed third at the PIAA state championships in March and enters his senior year with 102 career victories. Ranked No.11 in the nation by FloWrestling at 182, Wallace is expected to compete at 184.

"Tim is a typical scrappy Pennsylvania guy," Hill said. "He's talented on his feet with a variety of attacks and he's tough on top."

Day, of Valley View High School, finished his junior season as a state runner-up with a 45-2 record. In 2016, he placed fifth at the state tournament. Day is expected to compete at 197 for the Flashes. He has also been a key contributor to Valley View's football team.

"Stone's a brutal, strong and physical wrestler that reminds me a little of Dustin Kilgore when he came out of high school with his attacks," Hill said.

RE: Wrestling 2017-2018
Mixed results yesterday. Losing 16-15 is better than losing 23-12 I guess. Tutolo and Bardezbain were beaten badly (didn’t expect that). Doesn’t look it based on the scores but watching the match they were clearly outwrestled. The match at 184 (McCracken) reminded me of last year. A big early lead followed by a tired wrestler giving it all up in the 3rd period and then giving up 8 points in OT to hand Buffalo a major decision. Almost got pinned on top of it. Don’t know who would have had the tie breaker edge in the match (still the only thing worse than an NHL/soccer shoot out to decide a match) but that was a very bad way to lose. Conel was also totally gassed after the first period (not wrestling for a year will do that to you I suppose). He wasn’t quite strong enough to get his takedowns and lost a close one. Hopefully he will be back in form by the MACs and NCAAs.

More to see than last year but still average at best. Another good sign was we weren’t getting pinned every other match. The matches were all fairly close scoring wise.
