OT- Huricane Irma
Im very uneasy about this storm. My plans are to leave Thursday to go down and prepare my family's property and get a 14 passenger van to get my kids and grandkids and drive to northern Georgia or Tennessee to ride out the storm. All you folks in Florida, please be safe as this storm will be no joke if it hits as a Cat 5 on the expected path.

There are vastly more important things to think about but the U is playing out of town this Saturday.

Might want to think western Tennessee as typically if a tropical system hits the Gulf Coast in the Panhandle/AL/MS coastal areas they cause tornado outbreaks in Central & Western GA and South Carolina. It's been my experience that the only way tropical weather can be worse for us is if it's a direct hit like Hugo and Matthew or we get the atmospheric river effect like Joaquin in 2015.

I'm still feeling the the combination of the dip in the jet stream lifting and Irma hitting the edge of the Atlantic high pressure system is going to put the storm more north into east coast Florida. The question there is does the dip lift enough to allow the ridge to pull it out to sea or does it propel the storm up the coast into the Carolinas.

In any case be safe in your travels!

Thank you for that info and the sentiments. I was thinking about getting to Chattanooga Tenn. That should be safe for us, I think.

That would about as far east as I would go. I would also make contingency plans for the Nashville area depending on the track of the storm.

Looks like I will be staying home as calmer heads have prevailed. My kids and grandkids will all be evacuating to tenessee. The thing about being a parent is you think you always have to be there to protect your kids even when they are grown and have their own families.

That's something new I am learning. In previous years duties took me away and I had to depend on others to look out for my family as I was looking out for others. The flooding here in 2015 was the first real "emergency" I had to deal with as a civilian so I pretty much winged it.

Glad to know your family is taking this serious and getting out of the path. Prayers for safe travels and minimal damage at home.

Be choosy about where in Chattanooga. Keep in mind most of the city proper is in the flood plain. It is a river city.

I personally think if you're north of I-85 in GA/SC/WNC you'll be fine unless it is like Hugo and marches directly up I-26. Which almost never happens.

Thanks for the info. Most hotels in Georgia are already booked with Floridians looking to escape the Hurricane. Thats why I was looking at Chattanooga, thinking they would have a better chance of finding suitable lodging. Also, was thinking that if Irma did come up that way it would be reduced to at best a tropical storm after covering all that land area.

Miami at Arkansas State College has been cancelled. Smart decision -- especially since classes/the university has closed for the week.

It's tough taking care of grown children. The only thing tougher is having to take care of them and extremely elderly parents at the same time. It's a blessing to still have them, but there is very little they can do for themselves anymore. Still I wouldn't have it any other way. My wife and I have only lost 1 my dad.

I just spoke to my Daughter. She and my Grandsons live on Merritt Island. They have a room reserved in Orlando if the storm comes up the East Coast and they need to evacuate. Right now I'm praying for them and everyone else in Florida.

Green, wherever you are, please be careful and get somewhere safe. Gov. Scott issued evacuation orders today.

Projections have the storm more west than it was appearing which means a direct hit to Miami, and the university, by a potentially Category 5 hurricane at landfall. I am very glad we cancelled the game and allowed students/players to unite with their families and evacuate the area, given so much of the team is from the Miami area. Better to stay nearby, be prepared to clean up, and be ready to help families/victims than be stuck playing a game then waiting weeks in northeast Arkansas (*shudder*).

Photos from Carribean islands show serious devastation. Hopefully anyone who can't evacuate can at least find a strong building in which to ride out the storm.

Thanks for the goodwill. But I didnt go down. My kids are currently in Troy Alabama. We took some advice from folks about driving up to Tennessee. Now the problem is finding hotel rooms because everything is sold out with Bama having a game this weekend and the Florida refugees. They may have to drive to Mississippi. Even though I didnt go down I cant believe how much time I have have had to devote to getting them out and finding hotels. everything is sold out. We dont know what to expect when they get back home.
