Sutton Smith - promising and young
Smith had a breakout game using speed, leverage and instincts to cause havoc all night in the BC backfield. I'll note the message board saw this and confirmed in other posts.

What I didn't see from any other posters here is how he let the jet sweep run past him on 3 or 4 occassions. My hope is that this is correctable. It appears that he focused on the QB running after the handoff to the jet WR but never saw the handoff.

BC used that play effectively most of the night.

Can anyone else confirm that is his responsibility on the edge to contain that play?

By Bleacher Report standards, he was tha man!

Sutton Smith named All-Week 1 First Team DE by @BleacherReport #theHardWay02-13-banana

First Team: Sutton Smith, Northern Illinois

Although Boston College managed to steal a 23-20 victory, Sutton Smith made the ACC program earn every inch.

Smith, who arrived at Northern Illinois as a running back, racked up six tackles with a stunning five stops behind the line of scrimmage. He notched one sack in the narrow loss.

If I heard the announcers correctly they said Sutton was the fifth fastest on the team.

Hopefully someone will chime in on that, I don't know. We always seem to get burned on plays to the outside the last few years, especially early in the year.

I didn't really see much of the game, except for the last couple drives. I didn't get back from my game until almost 11. My guess is, especially since he appeared so active, they were reading him and he had the quarterback on the jet read. I could be wrong, but that's kind of SOP when you've got a guy on the edge that you can't really block: don't even try and option his ass instead.

It appeared a couple of times that the RB was already equal with him and Sutton was trying to look over the behemoths in front of him and didn't see the ball until it was by him. On another play he went to the QB tackle and guard blocked down and RB was by him again before he saw the ball. So I would say that it wasn't any one thing that had the sweeps going past him before he recognized the action.

Him, Pugh and Johnson all played extremely well against an ACC O-Line. If they all stay healthy, they will cause some havoc in the MAC. I wouldn't be surprised to see them hold Nebraska low in scoring with their new QB. The defense is going to keep us in games all year, which is why I think we need to rely on the RB group more and minimize making Graham have to throw it deep much (unless we are playing the cellar dwellers in the MAC).

If teams play a base defense then we can try and run more. If they sell out and play single safety most of the night then we need to hit that deep sideline pass. We need to give them a reason to stop the pass

It will be a challenge, Nebraska fans are very excited about their QB, could be their best in some time.

Whoevers idea it was to put Sutton Smith at D-End is a genius. I was skeptical about that at first, but I'm glad he's there harassing Quarterbacks. The sky is the limit for this kid!

Must have been the terrible coaching staff we have.
