Dan Hoard Interviews Mike Denbrock
Dan Hoard filled in on WLW last night (btw I love when he does this because he always covers UC). He played a clip of an interview he conducted earlier this week with OC Mike Denbrock.

In the interview, Denbrock indicated a big reason he came here was because BK and other guys who were hear always spoke so highly of their time at UC. He indicated that he got to know Luke Fickell back in 2015 and indicated they had a lot in common. He discussed his relationship with BK, dating back to their time together as GA's and room mates at Gran Valley State in 1987. States his biggest offensive influences are BK and Tyrone Willingham.

Mike Boone and Khalil Lewis are going to be featured big time this year. He indicated that the QB's have progressed well, but still are not good stewards with the football (too many TO's).

Bolded, I'm glad he's tuned in to that but that certainly is a major concern going into the season. I feel our defense and special teams will be improved but when the QB puts the ball in the hands of a defender for six points it's often a turning point in any game.

I agree completely with your comments about Dan Hoard and his coverage of UC. I don't want to re-open an old can of worms, but with the crowds UC draws these days for football, the scarcity of time allocated on-air is ludicrous.

You don't like being force-fed nearly nonstop coverage of how bad the Reds and Bengals suck? 04-cheers

^^ I think WLW needs to talk more about Pete Rose, the Big Red Machine, Tom Browning's no-hitter, whether Kenny Anderson should be in the HOF and the Freezer Bowl more often.

* Sarcasm alert.... they've beaten those topics into the ground every year since the advent of Sports Talk in this town.

I realize talk radio is a dying genre, but they are hastening their demise by continuing to bring up subjects that people under 35 did not witness because they were either too young or they were not even born.

Incoming Rant:

I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here, but local radio is absolute garbage. As already highlighted, it takes a guest host in Dan Hoard to discuss the Bearcats. But moreover, the whole format of the two local schmucks is archaic. Lets start with personnel. One guy per radio show. I dont want one guy ranting at me for 3 hours, I dont want JUST his opinion. Bring me an alternative, give me some light banter and different perspectives. DISCUSS topics. Have your views challenged. Don't rely on callers. I fall into that under 35 category and I dont want to call a radio show on my commute. Maybe having a damn co-host would negate the need for fan participation.

Then we got the topics themselves. No, Lance, I dont give a flying f*ck about the 1824 Reds or the Big Red Machine, or Pete "hasnt played since Lincoln" Rose. I mean I dont even care about the Reds now, but I get the need to discuss them. The need to discuss the CURRENT Reds is the same need we have to discuss the CINCINNATI Bearcats. They are this city's team in their respective sport. Whats that? We have a major D1 football and basketball program? Well dontcha know?! I get Bengals talk. I like Bengals talk. But I need a break. I need new names. I can only hear "Dalton" so many times before I want to run my car into the Ohio. You have 3 hours, 6 between the two of you, and a half hour each on a daily basis wont kill you to discuss UC. AND NO! I WILL NOT CALL YOUR SHOW! I AM HERE TO LISTEN.

This brings me to Dan. Dan is my guy. I could listen to him call games all day long. His writing and reporting is top notch, and apparently he takes time to cover the Bearcats when he guest hosts a show. Despite having to split time covering the Bengals, I believe Dans coverage of the Bearcats is still the absolute best. He's a pro, and he acts like it too (hint BCLair hint). If Dan ever got one of the local radio spots (and got a co-host), I'd immediately make the switch back to local radio. But until then, I will continue to just do podcasts in the car for my commutes. BTW, if DH ever did a podcast, I would be a permanent subscriber and hell, I'd probably donate too.

NOW, I made a thread about this not long ago, but I'll hijack this and update to their latest releases. Here are some podcasts for your listening pleasure so as to avoid the garbage that is Lance and Mo. I'm sure I'm helping derail this thread, but I needed to rant. Anyway:

Oh! Varsity Podcast (available on multiple podcast platforms):

Episode 3 (interview with former Bearcat FB player Alex Apyan): https://soundcloud.com/ohvarsity/three He views and feels the same way about the program as I do. Fantastic interview though. Plus that INTRO!

Episode 4: https://soundcloud.com/ohvarsity/four

Bearcat Blogcast:

Tony Miliano Interview: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/bearcat...e/51077987

Schedule Preview: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/bearcat...oplay=true

Drop the local radio dinosaurs, and listen to what YOU want to hear about. I did a long time ago and it sounds like it hasnt changed, which makes me all the more happy I made the switch.

Agree with others about the "radio dinosaurs." I tuned out years ago for all the aforementioned reasons. I would rather listen to Fox Sports Radio or 97.1 the Fan up here in Columbus even though it's OSU heavy. All of the local shows here have two hosts, most of which have good chemistry (and a sense of humor), and since Fickell has taken over at UC, I think they talk about UC football more than 700 WLW does -- which is extremely sad. I grew tired of hearing Lance spend an hour on Reds nostalgia in the middle of conference basketball season or baseball cards during football season.

Also agree that if Dan Hoard ever gets a radio slot, I would listen to it religiously. He must be the hardest working man in sports media, and despite splitting time between multiple sports he still manages to do it better than anyone else in Cincinnati.

Very well said, T-shirt. I also fall into the under-35 demographic. I understand the need to talk about current Reds and Bengals, even though I personally could not care less about either of them.

I moved here for college; UC is the only team I care about. I know I'm in the minority, but I'm sure there is more enthusiasm for the Bearcats than the good ol' boys on 700 WLW would imply.

The 1970's and 1980's are on the phone. They want their sports radio back.

I will give some credit to Mo Egger though. He makes it clear that he is a Bearcat fan, and is pretty good when talking about them.

Funny.

At times they were at least entertaining. So much for their infamous statement that UC should be happy with Rick Minter, "they'll never get anyone better to coach in Clifton".

It was much more entertaining here in the late 90s when there was more competition locally. In addition to WLW/1530 (which was 1360 IIRC), you had 1160 BOB which offered all day local programming. This was the "shock jock" era so the programming was much more risqué back then. 1160 was often criticized for its raunchiness and un-PC humor.

I also felt like UC got a lot more coverage back then. Maybe it was due to more selection of local programming, maybe it was due to the fact this was still the Huggins era and UC was the hot thing locally and nationally , but the fact is UC was discussed in some fashion every day and the games were marketed as big events that any sports fan had to go see in person.

Absolutely right. Said UC fans were dumb and that striving to get to UKs level were the best they'd ever do.

There is no competition and the one station owns the rights to broadcast both teams. Because there is no competition, there is no need for the one station to even pretend to care about putting out a quality product. Also, the lack of competition allows them to pay below market rates for sub-par on-air "talent."

On Earth 2, Lance McAllister is a telemarketer and local radio isn't dominated by 2 corporations. Also, multiple stations own the rights to broadcast the two pro teams and UC.

I mistakenly thought people were discussing what our offense will look like this year, but the thread has more than 3 replies so of course it's another thread to bash local media.

It's pretty much my fault. I derailed it with my post. Local media just make it so easy. You're right though, this, along with other particular topics like cracking the same Tubs jokes for the 37th time, are a bit overplayed.
