Exclamation OT: NFL stadiums vs NCAA stadiums
NFL stadiums have always been considered small compared to the larger on campus football stadiums. Most seem to be around the 65,000 mark. However, watching the Saints preseason game against the now LA Chargers. They are playing in StubHub Center, an MLS stadium for the LA Galaxy. The Chargers will be playing in this stadium for the next two seasons. It has a capacity of 27,000.....

How did the NFL allow this to happen and what does it really say about their product that they are playing in a stadium that is so small???

How is this a better situation then playing at Qualcomm in San Diego the next two seasons before the new stadium is built in LA???

They could have played in St Louis, San Antonio, Vegas(UNLV), and so many other places that would have been better then a 27,000 seat venue.

Because attendance isn't where the NFL makes money?

Because they want to be in LA, not San Diego, Vegas, St Louis, or San Antonio.

If attendance doesn't matter, then why are cities building NFL teams billion dollar stadiums??? If this were true, cities would build them a $200 million dollar 27,000 seat stadium and be happy about it.

I wouldn't take the Chargers situation as some xanary in a coal mine. The NFL is overlooking a lot to get two NFL teams in LA. Period.

The NFL does share gate so crappy crowds are an annoyance but the StubHub situation is temporary and in theory will boost the value of the AFC rights package when the next TV deal comes around by having an AFC team in the nation's second largest market.

A third team could be done at the Coliseum because it's been done before but I don't think USC or the Rams wanted that.

The mega stadiums are because you don't share premium seating revenue. If you sell a 24 seat luxury box they treat that as the sale of 24 regular priced tickets for sharing purposes and the owner pockets the excess.

And for all the soccer haters, for years soccer has been played on football fields, and now the NFL is playing in a purpose built soccer stadium.

Just not sure why they aren't playing at another, larger, venue in the LA area, Rose Bowl, Coliseum, Dodger Stadium.

Either way, just glad to see the Saints winning.

You can't really make money selling merchandise to a city that knows you are leaving.....they stand to make more than they lose by playing in a smaller stadium and kicking off the branding/marketing campaign. Losing 40,000 in attendance temporarily isn't as bad as the marketing hit they could take by staying.

Should have seen the Oilers crowds in Memphis. There people were mad Nashville was getting the team instead of them. Now imagine a situation where you've supported the team for more than five decades and they announce they are leaving but just going to hang around a couple years until their palace is ready.

If the Chargers make the playoffs with a home game, will they play it at StubHub or move it to a larger venue???

The size of stadiums has stayed the same or went down for a number of years (with the exception of Jerry World). Typical NFL stadiums run between 60,000 and 80,000 in seating with the low being Oakland at a little over 53,000 and the largest being the LA Rams because they are still playing in the LA Coliseum. When they move to their new stadium, it will be a little over 70,000 (with some expansion possible for big events) which will make the largest standard seating capacity MetLife Stadium (Giants/Jets) at 82,500.

The Chargers will make more money on taxpayer subsidies and personal seat licensing in the new stadium in 2 years when the new stadium opens than they would if they would have stayed in San Diego. They had to move when the opportunity was available.

They don't really care that they're playing a small stadium for 2 years...the payoff is worth it. Plus they're moving from SD to LA...that alone is worth it.

I get that it was preseason, but they only had just over 21,000 tickets sold for this past weekends game.

Might be a good move for the Chargers, just don't see it as a good move for the NFL to allow it.

When has an NFL market ever had 3 teams? I'd say baby steps I would say but let's see if LA could support two, it did fine last time but ultimately lost both.

The Rose Bowl and Pasadena only want so many events per year. The Coliseum is obviously already double booked.
