Article with missing word
Article about Chris King's outlook for 2017-20178 posted here. There's an 8-letter word that's not mentioned once in the article, so I think we can safely conclude it's off the agenda for now.

That probably also means UTRGV is safely in the WAC for several years at least. Which is great, I like the WAC and don't watch the 8-letter sport.

Very nice article. Thanks for sharing. And since I am not a fan of the 8-letter sport at all, I am glad UTRGV does not seem to be considering it either. Glad to have you in the WAC for years to come.

Had a chance to attend edinburg mayor re-election meet and greet. mayor mentioned speaking with dr. bailey and announced utrgv is gonna be getting a football program in the future. he has already seen designs of new football stadium seating around 30,000 and it will be located northside of campus.

I would like for us to get a football team but I really don't want to go to the Southland.

30,000??? Sounds like FBS numbers.

That's interesting that Garcia thinks it's still on and I can believe Bailey is still talking positively about it. However, my impression has been that Bailey likes to talk in aspirational terms while Chris King chooses his words very carefully.

The designs don't mean much. Since way back at UTPA eight or ten years ago they had a "campus master plan" hanging in the hallway in the Physical Plant Building showing a big-a$$ stadium, along with about a dozen large new academic buildings, all on the east side of Sugar Road north of the baseball stadium.

30,000 is close to the capacity mentioned in this article from March.

Quote:The university president, some of the plans I have seen, the wish-list, the hope, is for a football stadium that is three times larger than the soccer stadium that we just built. That is huge. That (soccer stadium) seats 12,000. You are talking about 35,000 (for the football stadium). Unbelievable, amazing, but everything is doable.

The design capacity doesn't necessarily mean the initial capacity although it very well could. For example, Cardinal Stadium, now Provost Umphrey Stadium, had design plans for an ultimate capacity of 50,000 in the 1960's. The first phase was built with 17,500. That was reduced to 16,000 with the 2009 renovation. The stadium is now designed for a 28,000 future capacity. The Montagne Center (basketball arena) built in the early '80's just to the north and the Dauphin Athletic Complex on the south built in 2009 reduced the designed size.

Another thing could be usable capacity. Some programs include berm seating in the capacity. An example is Missouri's Faurot Stadium. The listed capacity is 71,004 with permanent seating of 62,023. Missouri gets to 71,004 with berm seating in the north bowl as well as temporary seats when needed.

Provost Umphrey's current capacity would be around 22,000-25,000 if berm seating were included in the stadium capacity. The two "porches" on the south side of the Montagne Center could add to that capacity.

The WAC is building into a pretty good conference. Basketball is certainly better rated than Southland Conference basketball. There are some good teams like SFA and TAMU-CC in the Southland, but there are some stinkers that drop the overall.

I really like where UTRGV is headed. There are some good things going on.
