I was impressed. Think it rattled us a lot.
Over 7500 people were there for GCU legend DeWayne Russell's final game

if it wasn't for that NMSU game was the biggest crowd for gcu vs the Aggies
Actually that was the third largest crowd of the year. UMKC was one, Louisville was two, and the NMSU game was third. All three were however the largest crowds in arena history.

It stands to reason the Louisville game would draw a large crowd. And, the UMKC game was senior night for DeWayne Russell. For those WAC teams in contention for a WAC Championship, NMSU coming to town will draw a large boisterous crowd. The road to a conference championship typically goes through NMSU. Hence, NMSU finds itself as battle tested road warriors; getting most WAC team's best effort.

"The road to a conference championship typically goes through NMSU."
This is true, historically.

"Hence, NMSU finds itself as battle tested road warriors; getting most WAC team's best effort."
This is true, but not solely for the Ags. GCU and CSUB can also say the same thing in the recent past. UVU is getting there as well.

Bottom line, if a school is having a good season, fans turn out. If not....not so much, even if it IS NMSU coming in. The past year has shown good attendance increases for several programs due to the overall improvement in the conference, not just because of one school. The Ags (mostly Dancing and probably Frank in lurking spirit) can only make their claim if they are drawing the ONLY sellouts from games, not that they DO cause sellouts.

Nobody is claiming that the Ags are not a good team; yes, they do sell out often. But there is more to the conference these days with improved schools all around driving the increases. This applies both to WAC games as well as OOC games.

Does Bakersfield have any future plans to perhaps demolish the Icardo gym and build a basketball arena?

I'm assuming most games will be sold out this year and they will either have to expand the Icardo pretty massively or move to the downtown arena Rabobank to satisfy ticket demand. I do think they want to keep it on campus though. There is room to make the Icardo bigger. The money is probably going to be there as well.

I wonder what the attendance at Key Arena will be when Cal visits this season.

RE: 2016-17 WAC Men's Basketball Attendance Numbers
I might be wrong but given last springs coaching upheaval of NMSU by UNM, I suspect this game will draw the largest home attendance in the WAC. Other non-conference games to make note of will be NMSU vs. UTEP (if the Miners are good and bring their fans), UVU vs. BYU (this game might have more Cougar fans than Wolverine fans), and UVU vs. Weber State. GCU vs. St. Johns should be a big draw but since the game is at Talking Stick Resort Arena (home of the Suns), is it considered a home game (or a neutral court game)? Otherwise, most of GCU's home games should be near capacity this season.

St. Johns is a "neutral" site game just because it isn't played in a regular home arena

I feel we should see a increase in attendance for New Mexico State. I think the UNM/NMSU game on November 17th could be close to a sell out. Will be a lot of interest for that game for sure.

The UVU non-conference home games with BYU & Weber State should draw well, at least 6,000 for Weber State and 8,000 plus for BYU. I think the NMSU game at home against Colorado State is a game that should do well. CSU was 24-12 last season.

Other non-conference home games of interest:

Cal at Seattle
Bradley at Chicago State
Northern Illinois at Chicago State
UCI at UTRGV
UTA at UTRGV

UTRGV had to move their home game against Olahoma to 2018-2019 because the new arena was not ready. UCI was the Big West regular season champ and UTA the Sun Belt regular season champ, so they have two solid teams coming in. Seattle should be a fun team to watch under Hayford, considered one of the better offensive coaches in the country. Seattle averaged 4,614 in attendance in 2011, but that has dropped significantly the last few years under Dollar.

For the Aggies, I see only the NMSU-UNM game seeing an increase in attendance. The rest of the games will be on par for last year or lower. My opinion has nothing to do with the coach, players, opponents or NMSU. Just the excuse making community known as LC.

Two overlooked OOC games. Idaho at CSUB and Georgia Southern at CSUB for the return leg of a home and home. Idaho made the CIT and beat Stephen F Austin and Georgia Southern made the CBI. Both have a lot returning and should be good. Idaho is being picked by a lot of people as the Big Sky champs, very excited about that game. Georgia Southern is nothing to sleep on either and have two guys who should be all conference with Ike Smith and Tookie Brown. UT-Arlington should take the conference but Georgia Southern should be in contention. Another great game for CSUB. I would imagine both games will be sold out as well.

Unfortunately, CSUB attendance is capped at around 4K because of their arena/gym situation.

Yes that has been stated 1000 times now. We all know. I was just pointing out some interesting games at the Icardo this year.

Next season, Cal Baptist joins the WAC with a brand spanking new 5K arena. UTRGV is waiting for the new 8.5K Bert Ogden Center to finish construction. The CSUB basketball program is currently on an upswing and there appears to be more fan interest. This would be the right time for the administration to consider a renovation/expansion of the Icardo Center; while Barnes is around.

I've also stated that a million times in this thread in fact. Just confused why you feel the need to bring this up again? Once again I was just pointing out some interesting games at the Icardo this year. Not really necessary to point out something that has been stated a million times in my opinion and that takes the focus off my original post that there are two interesting mid-majors coming to the Icardo this year. Feels like a potshot at CSUB.

Here's a pot shot. Your gym sucks. Get a real college arena. Las Cruces high school gyms are bigger and nicer.

Idaho and Georgia Southern are not impresssive. CSUB has had two very good seasons in a row and they should do better than Idaho and Georgia Southern.

First off I never even said they were impressive I said they were interesting games and teams that should be in the hunt for their conference title especially Idaho. Also home games against? Yeah right. How can you actually believe that? No P5 or high tier mid-major is coming to play us at home. Especially after two years of success. Getting good teams to come to play you at home as a mid major is impossible. Do you not know a lot about college basketball scheduleing? As of right now NMSU doesn't have any big teams coming to their home court, UNM doesn't count because it's a traditional game. Last year their biggest game at home that wasn't traditional was what a mediocre Air Force team? CSUB can't do better than NMSU because they have far more resources. So should they be doing a lot better? No, getting high quality teams to play you at home is near impossible for a conference like the WAC. Don't mention GCU as they are an outlier with a boatload of money.

I agree, for the most part no P5 program wants to play a WAC school in their venue. This is why it's been impressive GCU and Seattle have been able to host ACC and PAC12 schools in recent years. As these programs improve, those home games will be harder to schedule. As for NMSU, in the last four seasons (the time CSUB has been in the WAC) besides our annual rivalry with UNM and UTEP, we've hosted South Alabama, UC Irvine, Colorado State, Wyoming, Oral Roberts, Tennessee Tech, Long Beach State, and Air Force. This season NMSU is expected to host Colorado State and San Diego once the schedule is finalized. There have been good MWC and BWC schools which have come to the Pan American Center.

The reason I made note of games like NMSU games against UNM and UTEP and UVU's games against BYU and Weber State is because their is a community interest which could give these games an additional bump in attendance; outliers from the WAC's typical home games. CSUB hosting Fresno State is that type of game. BUT, CSUB needs a bigger venue to fully benefit from the interest this type of game could draw. As I said prior, CSUB is capped at under 4K playing in the Icardo Center.

Top attendance games (in last four seasons) of the four programs I think will drive WAC attendance in the future...

New Mexico State
1. Chicago State (3/7/15) - 12,572
2. UTEP (11/15/13) - 10,019
3. UM Kansas City (1/2/17) - 9,893

Grand Canyon
1. UM Kansas City (2/25/17) - 7,502
2. Louisville (12/3/16) - 7,493
3. New Mexico State (2/11/17) - 7,479

Utah Valley
1. Utah State (12/10/16) - 6,792
2. New Mexico State (1/28/17) - 6,246
3. Utah State (12/13/14) - 6,121

Seattle U.
1. Washington (12/22/16) - 6,163
2. Washington (11/21/14) - 5,319
3. Idaho (3/1/14) - 3,573
