I think it has a long, bright future.

With new renewable sources there are issues with constant availability.

The delta between "coal has a long bright future" and "issues with renewable sources constant availability" are relevant today, and probably tomorrow, but battery storage technologies will make coal mines (in the USA) a tourist attraction sooner rather than later.

I would say by 2050 at earliest. So there is still reason to plan for coal today, but the future will be here for the next generation.

Coal is easily stockpiled and makes the perfect backup fuel for both renewable energy shortfalls and for national security. Nothing else can offer that like coal.

And there's plenty of it being used on a regular basis in private industry. Public utility power plants aren't the only things burning coal.

RE: NYT admits coal isn't dead
Coal *IS* dead, at least as a major source of primary utility energy going forward, and at least for 100 years.

And fracking is holding the smoking gun.

And we all are benefiting with energy independence, LUDICROUSLY CHEAP energy prices, and a cleaner environment.

The fracking injection fluid is now using food grade additives. You can drink it. Colorado's Democrat Governor drank it in front of the press. And it releases a FRACTION of the carbon that coal does. And it doesn't produce mountains of highly carcinogenic coal fly ash.

Yes, certainly. And so is oil. Each is a finite resource. The question is when. The conversation is not that we shouldn't use them now, the conversation is how much longer before we don't need to use them because of new technology. Battery tech is close. Not there today. But it will be there.

As mentioned, we are still a ways away, probably a generation or more away, but that time is coming and it must be planned for.....

Coal is much cheaper to store. It is the answer for large, long term energy reserves.

Batteries require power to get recharged. That power doesn't come from batteries.

Then we will deplete the raw materials for batteries.

You can take coal to the bank. I'll take solar and battery storage.

Gas fireplace, but I have a fire pit that gets a lot of use and a great side barrel smoker.

RE: NYT admits coal isn't dead
Dead has been the wrong thing to say. It's more like it's terminally ill.

I'm happy to see people getting jobs back but I can't help but to believe that it's a temporary bandage and the region will be exposed again. I hope they use this reprieve to train for other jobs and that they do not try to get their kids in the field like they often do.

It's like the second season of The Wire. The harbor jobs were dying away and they put a lot of resources into revitalizing it. Got the state to dredge the harbor and revitalize the grain pier. As this entire process was going down, a company came by and was selling a highly automated system that would reduce man-hours when implemented. Whenever that automated system comes in those people are going to be displaced again.

Go right ahead.

Last fall they built the largest solar project in SC in Saluda. It was built on 58 acres of former pastureland. At it's peak it will power 1400 houses, or one of our typical subdivisions.
