Ohio State basketball has seen an enthusiasm drop in recent years, and new head coach Chris Holtmann is working to correct that. Obviously that starts with on-court success, but there are also other ways to help.

“Our environment in there needs to improve,” Holtmann said, referring to Value City Arena, while speaking to season ticket holders Tuesday night.

To that end, here are a few notes from his remarks at the Evening With Coach Holtmann event:

He’s open to playing in-state opponents like Cincinnati, Dayton and Xavier. Along those lines, he’s had conversations about bringing a Crossroads Classic-type showcase to Ohio.
He would also like Ohio State to play in marquee holiday tournaments, something the previous regime usually avoided.
While the Buckeyes can’t play the likes of North Carolina every game, Holtmann wants fans to get a chance to see better opponents at home if possible.

So I thought my angst was towards AD Gene Smith, when it should have been founded at Fad Matta after all...

The willingness to schedule UC or Xavier extended much deeper than Thad or Gene Smith. There has been a long standing unwritten rule going back to us beating them back in the 1960s. Here's an article from 2011

Back in the early nineties they were open to a two for one home series but that's before the Flint incident

"Scheduling is something we work on continuously," Matta said. "We try to put together the best possible schedule for our program and our fans each year. Our philosophy has been to schedule home-and-home series outside the state of Ohio to give our program more national exposure whenever possible."

Recent tosu articles now are pointing to supporters concern over weak home OOC attendance (We suffer from that with our attendance/students).

I don't care about playing OSU in hoops that much. I only want to play them because we'd skull drag those losers right now. Otherwise, beating a mediocre Big10 team doesn't really help us.
