Not that I’d heard.

However if they won’t pay our minimum or give us a home game, he’s not going to schedule them.

I'm pretty sure he mentioned it in an interview about a year ago.

I don't think he has an issue with scheduling independents, he just wants to make sure we make money off the home game. If we can get regional AAC schools easily, which we appear to be doing, why play Liberty?

Sure, we have no need to reach for games.

To say some in this league need to X independents from future schedules is insane when we know there are teams in this league who have a hard time getting home games.

Texas State is about to have a real close one, so does that make it acceptable for them to schedule NMSU because it’s a regional independent?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I assume this is directed at my comments (or at Karl) but for my part if you re-read them I said I have no problem with playing independents. However I personally listened to Karl tell reporters that the SUN BELT'S scheduling philosophy is 1 P5 money game, 2 H&H with PEER conference teams and 1 FCS.

Karl says this, but he also knows that no one is turning down a P5 home game, or a home game with BYU.

What he's really looking to stop are the teams that play multiple money games in a season, or host multiple FCS opponents.

What "other teams"? ODU got the money so they could move around the schedule. LU got like 6 games out of that one deal. They haven't paid anyone else to my knowledge.

They're taking reduced guarantees from VT (and likely UVA) to travel there.

Liberty is getting $500,000 for the games at Tech. Not bad counting there's no flight needed as Tech is only a couple hours away. We're paying Tech $250,000 for the games at Liberty.

Really, Liberty is just playing a free game at VTU in order to get the Hokies to come to their place.

Amigo, good luck on hoping to attract 15,000 for FBS games with stadium expansion. Seems like their is optimism and hope on the Coastal stadium thread. It's great that most SBC fans want CCU to succeed. That Oct. 17 Coastal vs. GaSt game looks to be a "World Beater" with pre-game enthusiasm and attendance setting records.

It's debatable that Liberty has "Not a big enough name to attract a crowd...". The lightning rod that Liberty is, and will be in the future, will generate interest as the "must win", "must not lose game" for most all SBC teams due to the past 5 years of the LU/SBC discussions.

Using the name logic, when LU becomes a "bigger name" then it would be appropriate for SBC teams to play LU?

Most people around here don't know you guys exist.
And the SBC schools have a similar recognition, or lack of recognition challenge as LU may have. Most fans in the eastern section of the country know very little about the SBC and the member schools. It would be safe to say that the position and desire of LU to gain FBS recognition will be easier for LU to achieve than SBC schools. The reasons and excuses have been mentioned thousands of times with the hundreds of threads about LU with no need to rehash here

The 'bigger name" mention just seemed inconsistent and a wayward statement. If it is so, what would it entail to achieve "bigger name" status?

We are very specific in who we'll bring in for home games:

1. P5's
2. Big Name G5's
3. Regional G5's
4. Regional FCS

If you look at our future home schedule (Which is booked solid until 2022) Every single home game hits one of those markers, except a long agreed to series with UNLV, which was done at a time when we had a ton of home games to fill.

If the visiting team is not going to travel (and you guys wouldn't) then they have to be of sufficient quality and name to bring more casual fans in. You guys just don't hit those markers...sorry.
Valid points you have made. And in addition, the SBC has the same, if not even greater issue of LU. Recognition. Few fans in the eastern section of the country know very little of the SBC and it's schools. Until March, I lived one hour from Boone. The ACC continues to dominate the media attention with little mention of the SBC. Once CCU has hopefully built a fan base, the Carolinas could generate interest in App St and CCU. SBC awareness is simply not in the eastern part of the US. SBC fans can hope the Boone and Conway pockets of interest can grow into regional interest. The ACC and the SEC will continue to command media and print interest. And an indy LU will be included more in the mix with the strong schedule of local ACC teams producing more piggy backing interest.

Regarding LU not traveling, if you check with ODU, App St, JMU, Ga St, you will find that is not true. LU is expanding it current 19,200 stadium to accommodate the future FBS schedule. We who thought it would be in the 35,000 range are now thinking it may be even more.

LU is not a good fit for the SBC. And it is now to LU's advantage that membership was not extended. It's better that LU be an OOC opponent for SBC teams, for LU and the SBC.

That's just silly. It won't cost Liberty anymore than $100,000 to travel to Blacksburg. $400,000 is still allot of money the last time I looked. Saying that unless you're getting a million it doesn't matter makes no sense. FCS schools gladly travel for way less than that. True, it's not the 1.2 million we're getting from Auburn. So you wouldn't be happy for A-State to get $500,000 to play Univ of Arkansas, with return games?

The truth is what Liberty has pulled off in the way of scheduling is amazing and no one ever dreamed this could happen this quickly.

I am no fan of Liberty, but I have zero problem with their being independent. I definitely prefer App State being in a conference, but if a school wants to be independent and can pull it off in a way that satisfies their fanbase, then more power to them.

In fact, I wonder whether there will start being more teams going independent. CFP money and TV money/exposure certainly dictates that being in an FBS conference is the better choice the vast majority of the time. Scheduling, of course, is far more challenging for independent teams, too. But I can imagine a school like Rice considering it. Rice is with no historic rivals. They're a Duke/Tulane/Northwestern type of elite private school in an otherwise large group of medium to very large sized public schools. Not only are they apart from Texas and A&M, they're also no longer in the same league with TCU, SMU, or Houston. Geography is the only thing they have in common with C-USA schools, and that's only with the western division. Independence could make sense for them so they could schedule more Texas schools and more private schools, which I imagine would be good for their fanbase.

Who knows? Maybe the current independent schools will wind up in conferences within a few years, but I could see more schools going the other way, too.

I don't really think anyone cares if they're independent. Obviously most on here prefer this so we don't have to associate with them.

The question is whether or not we'd be okay scheduling them.

Seems like I am being unclear as the ACC mention was meant to state that LU will benefit highly from those games, especially the in-state UVA and VT games. Not that LU was going to compared to or mentioned equally to the AC as an indy. And LU would likely travel comparable as App St or GoSo would to away games in the SBC.

Chico, slopping all LU fans into one category is like saying all CCU fans are holy rollers, or leftish tree huggers, or racists pigs, or Trump followers. When one spurts belittling jabs, it reduces the conversation to low, knuckle dragging levels one step above name calling and void of intellectual discussion.

If there was as much effort to support CCU, and build attendance, as there is to spurn and diminish LU, everyone would be much better off. Especially Coastal fans. I'm happy for you guys becoming FBS. Coastal is a good fit for the SBC. And fortunately, the future upside of Coastal is much, much greater than the present reality.

Good for Liberty making their way through difficult waters. Happy for them.

As for the Bobcats playing them? Don't really think it's a good idea.

They aren't a name, they won't pack the stadium.
They are going to struggle early on, so they won't help with our strength of schedule.
We don't recruit in Virginia much, so us getting exposure out there is a big ol' so what.
And then the whole other thing.

I just don't see a reason to schedule them. It doesn't have a carrot for Texas State.

From an outsider perspective, the only games to me that make sense for H/H would be regional SBC teams. I would say the same with CUSA teams.

App
Coastal
Ga So
Ga St
UNC
WKU
MTSU
ODU
Marshall

I don't get why any SBC teams would have an issue playing H/H with Liberty. I would rather watch SBC play Liberty on TV than most MAC schools.

In theory, you think that should be an automatic W as they build their team. Like it or not, Liberty probably has higher name recognition than most SB teams. Liberty kinda of remains of #3 Earnhardt. He didn't care if fans cheered or booed, only if they were quiet. Liberty has that same appeal, doesn't seem there will be an neutral fans. I think they have the potential to be similar to BYU in sports. As a NCSU fan, I would have no issue with 2-1 with Liberty.

I have no objection to playing Liberty but to suggest they have more name recognition than Arkansas State, App State, Georgia Southern, Troy, Louisana and others in SBC football is a real reach. Kinda like comparing NCState to NCCU given that both are North Carolina schools that play football. I would really like to see A-State and NCState schedule another contest(s) soon.

To be clearer, to the casual fan or not diehard college football fan, Liberty does have better name recognition. Like it or not, these things can make a difference. How many of your SB programs had a US President give a speech let alone annouce a football schedule?

I would be all for Ark St to visit Carter-Finley. I am hoping App St and NCSU will schedule something in the future. Would love to do a 2-1 with them and/or Charlotte. I have a feeling NCSU will be offering Coastal a pay day game in the next round of annoucements.

I recognize that each has their opinion but can you offer any substance to back your claim of recognition? For example, Arkansas State has appeared in several consetitive bowls over the past 6-7 years with several victories and conference championships along with several appearances on national tv. App State, if nothing else, received world recognition and continues to do so for their several 1AA championships and the defeat of a ranked Michigan at their home along with a recent bowl win, Georgia Southern was a 1AA power house for years with several championships and has appeared in recent bowls. Troy is receiving national recognition now and getting votes in the top 25, Coastal won the national NCAA baseball championship last year with lots of national publicity and fanfare. I could go on with more SBC teams. Now, what recognition has Liberty received? Please tell us other than their founder was a national minister and conservative movement founder. You are probably too young to know but... Ark State played NC State in the late 90's, losing in multiple overtimes to the best QB NC State has or ever will have. A late questionable call on the goal line helped your team with the win as I recall.
We have wanted a rematch for a long time.

RE: Liberty Schedule
Liberty has name recongnition for sure...they are known for cheap online degrees and for having a religious zealot as a founder.

BTW George W gave a speech at GS while in office & I wouldn't be surprised if other SBC schools have hosted important speakers if that really matters to anyone.
