Details on the division of Big Ten media rights
Matt Sarzyniak has details on his blog, here: https://mattsarzsports.blogspot.com/2017...g-ten.html

Looks like what Fox gets in return for paying more than ESPN is the football CCG, first choice on which weeks of the football season to take the best game of the week, and a few more men's basketball games.

So if the Big Ten were to expand before the end of the contract, they would still have the same amount of money? Just divided among more members. They don't include any clauses in these things for a bump in payout in the event of expansion, right?

For a 6 year deal they may not have. But the longer contracts all have clauses for expansion.

RE: Details on the division of Big Ten media rights
The biggest question going forward is whether this contract is a peak or whether the dollar amounts will just keep going up. IMO the only way it's not a peak is if the networks get OTT rights in the next deal and can distribute the games in a way that makes up for the steep and continuing decline in the number of cable/satellite subscribers.

Of course, for the SEC and ACC, the current contracts extend out so far, and it's too iffy to predict how the networks will be making money in 15-20 years. If the current Big Ten deal turns out to be a peak, then the SEC and ACC might be looking good to be locked in for more years.

I don't think the SEC or ACC will care about surrendering the OTT rights for a bump up. Both have clauses that permit renegotiation for various reasons (chiefly additions). I don't think the SEC has peaked because their T1 is up in 2024 and it is widely know that the CBS contract is undervalued. That said after that adjustment is accomplished I will concede that we may well have passed peak and that only additions would/could possibly generate increases. And the selling of more P games will be there for tweaks.

Something i did not realize until recently that you won't know if a game is a night game until 12 days before the game. That's new to the BigTen. They used to announce all the night games in April. This is going to mess up people's ability to plan ahead and may affect attendence.

Would that be without expansion, and by extension is the expansion era over?

It's been about 40 years since Georgia Tech joined the ACC.

Cord cutter fantasy/gobbledygook. Even used "OTT" non-standard terminology. And of course, telling anyone who will listen about the myth of "steeply" declining traditional payTV subscribers.

Bless your heart

Yep. Welcome to the world of TV uber alles.

Hey, if you guys don't like it, you can always give Fox and ESPN their money back...

Pretty sure every other P5 conference already has it in their TV deals that game times can be moved on 12 days notice and that there are a certain number of games each season which the TV networks can put on a "6 day hold" and change the game time as late as the Sunday before a Saturday game.

And you're right, that is what Fox and ESPN are paying the big bucks for. To use the games as programming and use them in the time slots they think will maximize ratings. They're paying for the right to move a matchup between two ranked teams to prime time instead of being stuck with a primetime game chosen in April that looks like a who-cares matchup when November rolls around.
