Delany is easily the top Power conference commissioner of the past 15 years, but this Hulu/Youtube deal seems like a back-door admission that cable revenue hasn't been quite as good as desired, especially compared to the SECN.

So how is future expansion accounted for when conferences make deals like this? Are there provisions for the networks to pay more if schools are added to the conference?

Two PAC12 schools in Silicon Valley and we aren't the first to take advantage of technology.

Friday Night Lights was the bigger admission Quo!

RE: B1G first to get a major streaming deal
This isn't a streaming deal. This is just announcing the carriage of BTN by what will be two new players to the "online channel bundle" game that is currently serviced by Sling, VUE, and DirecTV Now (for the most part).

To be quite honest, nothing really to see. BTN is already carried on those three previously mentioned services (depending on which package you get). So nothing new, or ground breaking, has happened here. FWIW, I do believe SECN is also carried within some tier of those three, as well.

Put it another way: pretend that BTN had never been carried on Charter cable network, and today BTN announced that they had reached a carriage deal with Charter. Well ... that's literally the same thing that was announced today, except instead of a traditional cable network, it's two more of these newfangled "online channel bundles" that you have to access with an iPhone or a Roku, etc.

Put it another way: pretend that BTN had never been carried on COX cable network. And today BTN announced that they had reached a carriage deal with COX. And ESPN's offerings as well. Heck ESPN and FOX are both stakeholders in HULU.

The SECN is streamed through the ESPN app (ESPN 3).

We're talking different very different things.

When in comes to "online/internet/streaming TV", there are two very different animals:

- content that you access through apps, which may or may not require a subscription to another service. Some people call these "over the top" services, but I don't agree that is a valid name. Examples of apps that do not require a subscription to another service are: Netflix, HBO Now, Hulu, Youtube, etc. Examples of apps that DO require a subscription to another service are: HBO Go, FX Now, WatchESPN, etc.

- essentially the same thing as a cable or sat bundle of channels, but without the hardware (no box, no dish, no coax cables). You pay $X/mo for access to the content itself, but you have to supply your own means to obtain that content from the internet. Other than that, it's exactly the same channels as you would get from cable/sat.

Today's announcement is just saying that BTN picked up carriage with two more new services of the second type above.

Naturally, in an effort to maximize confusion I guess, Hulu and YouTube appear to be calling their new services of the second type above the same as their current services of the first type above.

This is because Larry Scott & Co. messed up in negotiating the original PTN deals with cable companies. Those deals provide that if anyone gets PTN for less than the cable companies are paying, their rates are automatically adjusted down to the lowest rate that anyone is paying. This is also one of the obstacles with DirecTV. Ol' Larry has already thrown a deputy commissioner and a PTN CEO under the bus for this; it's amazing that he hasn't been held personally accountable.

SECN and P12N are both available on Sling. No BTN yet there. SECN has been there since Sling launched.

SECN and BTN are both on Playstation Vue.

Thanks orangefan, that is a good point.

Granted, it depends which package you get with Sling ... as they offer multiple packages: https://www.sling.com/programming/sports

Maybe when Verizon buys DISH (owns Sling), and rebrands the service as "Verizon TV Now" or some such, they'll carry BTN. (this is a wild guess by me)

I have had Sling since January. I have the $40/mo. plan. NBCSN, FS1, FS2, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, the NHL Network and ACC Network Extra are included.

You have to pay $10/mo. extra for the SEC Network, Pac 12 Network, ESPN News and ESPN U. I have declined.

The BTN is not available yet on Sling.

Guess most Sling users are in the southeast and west coast.

Terry, I'm assuming you're a primary screen guy (watch on TV, rather than laptop/phone), so which device do you use to access your Sling content? Also, does that Sling app give you a direct way to access ESPN3 branded content, or do you have to go outside that app to a WatchESPN app on the same device?

I have Sling on Amazon Fire Sticks on all of my TV's.

I also have Sling on my laptop and my Samsung Galaxy S8+.

ESPN3 is organic to Sling. No need to go to another app.

Thanks. I only ask because there is no such thing as an "ESPN3 channel". It's just a brand for game broadcasts that don't make it on an actual channel, and usually you have to access them through the WatchESPN app.

Sling must do something proprietary in that regard.
