We're talking different very different things.
When in comes to "online/internet/streaming TV", there are two very different animals:
- content that you access through apps, which may or may not require a subscription to another service. Some people call these "over the top" services, but I don't agree that is a valid name. Examples of apps that do not require a subscription to another service are: Netflix, HBO Now, Hulu, Youtube, etc. Examples of apps that DO require a subscription to another service are: HBO Go, FX Now, WatchESPN, etc.
- essentially the same thing as a cable or sat bundle of channels, but without the hardware (no box, no dish, no coax cables). You pay $X/mo for access to the content itself, but you have to supply your own means to obtain that content from the internet. Other than that, it's exactly the same channels as you would get from cable/sat.
Today's announcement is just saying that BTN picked up carriage with two more new services of the second type above.
Naturally, in an effort to maximize confusion I guess, Hulu and YouTube appear to be calling their new services of the second type above the same as their current services of the first type above.
