I tried to recall if there was a time that the entire board showed one image and could not remember it. The replays were crisp and easy to see from just about the entire stadium except right underneath it. Not sure if it was just where we were sitting but the audio seems better as well. There were 20000 at the game last night and it was easy to hear everything. Should be good stuff for the first football game next week.

So there was a noticeable change in the audio? Where were you sitting? I didn't think there would be any sound improvements until later.

I was on the East side...for Football we normally sit under the press box so I dont know if last night was normal or not. It was for sure better than what we normally get for football.

Surely these are some useless statistics we all need to know for bragging rights this season.

It's the average size of most P5 schools. I think we're on the large side for those in the AAC not in an NFL stadium.

According to this list from 2016, we have the 25th largest video board in the NCAA, outside of those in NFL stadiums (Miami, UMass, Temple). We have the largest one in our conference outside of Temple and Memphis. Some other schools have gotten new video boards since then, but I doubt we will have slipped much past 25 in the past year. So yeah, it does appear that we have an average or above average P5 video board.

EDIT: Raymond James has definitely upgraded since then, so add USF to the list of NFL-owned stadiums with larger boards.

Proof that size matters.

I once overheard a conversation from a lady that has seen a lot of video boards. For most video boards, size was all she used to compare them. But for a few, she only talked about how well (or not) they were used, and size was not even brought up. So video board size definitely matters, but it is still possible for a small video board to deliver a great game day experience, and a huge video board to be a disappointment.

Especially if said large video always goes out in a matter of seconds. I think it's a matter of pixels. You've really got to sense every inch of the board.

I think if trimmed the trees around the scoreboard it would look bigger.

I've heard that the largest video boards can also be difficult to start up... with all those pixels, it takes a lot of power to get them up and running.

True, but our old scoreboard didn't work all the time like it used to and the attachments underneath were starting to sag.

Space is a concern as well. A scoreboard in a wide open space will always feel smaller than a scoreboard that has been stuffed into a small and constricted area.

Now that I have seen the new board with football graphics, I can agree that that's a huge upgrade!
