El Paso Arena Can Be Built but No Sports Allowed

The downtown arena that was approved over five years ago keeps hitting roadblocks. UTEP basketball wanted to use it for the marquee games and to host the CUSA tournament. How ridiculous does this ruling sound to you?

Why do people always associate biggest with nicest? I never been there (will see the arena when we go to UTEP for football in Oct) but from the pictures I saw I wouldn't say it's the nicest arena.

Since you been there why is it the nicest in your opinion? You may be correct, I'm just going by pictures.

As for this ruling I read it different.....

they can't call it a sports arena and use it just for that but nothing said a few basketball games can't be played there. I can see why the people living in that neighborhood would be against it. From google it looks like most of that neighborhood has already been destroyed/rebuilt by modern buildings.

Would this arena be much bigger than the Don Haskins Center, and does El Paso want to build it to attract bigger musical acts and other events they perhaps currently can't get to come to El Paso? Unless I'm mistaken, Austin, Texas has one arena, the Frank Erwin Center on the campus of UT. The Frank Erwin Center seats almost 19K for concerts though, while the Don Haskins Center seats 12.5K.

can UTEP just update/remodel Haskins? and it's complete b.s. that some judge in Austin gets to tell people in El Paso what they get to do w/ an arena that got local approval

I had heard they're getting rid of the Erwin Center and building a new on-campus arena for basketball and concerts.

Is there any way the city can fight the ruling to overturn it to include sports? It's very ridiculous. Basically it seems as if it can only be used for concerts or local fairs or gatherings.

I didn't read it that way. Or I missed it. I read that it can't be used solely for s sports facility.

The Haskins Center is a true basketball arena. Not scaleable in any way. All 12K seats are permanent. The new arena would be about the same (maximum) capacity but multi purpose and scaleable. Quite often, half the Haskins Center has to be tarped off due to the stage of the performance.

Last time I checked, this arena wasn't going to be bigger than the Don so I don't see the point. Not for fans anyway.
