10 College Football Head Coaches Poised For Big Promotions_Troy and App State
#9. Neal Brown, Troy

Brown’s Trojans won 10 games and nearly stunned eventual national champ Clemson in Week 2. If he keeps Troy rolling in 2017, Power Five ADs could be burning up his agent’s phone in December.

As an assistant, Brown built a reputation as an offensive wunderkind. As the 37-year-old leader of Troy, he’s beginning to flash signs of being a rising star in the coaching ranks. Brown has been a coordinator in the SEC and the Big 12 at Kentucky and Texas Tech, respectively. And in two seasons in the Sun Belt Conference, his teams have been well coached on both sides of the ball and especially balanced on offense.

#8. Scott Satterfield, Appalachian State

Satterfield is basically Appalachian State’s version of Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald. However, at some point soon the lifelong Mountaineer is going to be lured out of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Satterfield starred as an App State QB, spent his first 11 years as an assistant with his alma mater and returned in 2012 to lead Jerry Moore’s offense. When Moore’s contract wasn’t renewed, Satterfield was promoted. After a rocky start, the 44-year-old has improved in each of the last three seasons, winning the Sun Belt in 2016 and piloting the program to its first-ever bowl game and win in 2015. And with the returns of so many stars in 2017, like RB Jalin Moore, Satterfield’s Mountaineers are built to remain the class of the Sun Belt.

Obviously we knew that but their names are starting to get red hot. They repeat last years results Troy and App better pray for a quiet P5 and AAC firing year.

If they win 9+ games I think they will both be gone. There are too many openings yearly for them not to be lured away.

Anderson probably should be on this list, too. He seemed to be a serious candidate for Baylor this past offseason.

I was just making light of how we've been through this so many times. Those guys will be hot commodities if they do well this season. I'd suspect Anderson might be as well. Depends a LOT on how the offense does this year since it's widely believed that this year is on him regarding their performance.

8-5 with a loss to UCA does not get one on this list. He was a candidate for Baylor more because no one sure if ANYONE would take a job with that mess.

Naturally, we're bringing in a bunch of old Briles guys and wanting to run the Baylor offense this year.

Anderson needs to run whatever he ran in 2015. I can't argue with adding Briles staff members though. You guys have given me hell because I never pick you guys to win the conference, but this year, I think Arkansas State will be the league's team to beat. Troy and APP have a lot going for them, but all signs are pointing to an offensive return to 2015 from the Red Wovles. You guys returned almost no one offense last year, and managed to turn it around near the end of the year. This year, a boatload of talent returns, and I honestly think Buster Faulkner was the main issue for you guys last season. With Anderson back at the helm, and a second year QB, this will be a tough bunch to stop.

Petrino might not be Top 10, but maybe 25. He has done wonders in a difficult position. If he wins another bowl, he will move on with his staff. We wouldn't blame him.

Their main issue was how they approached the season. Their OL had not really practiced together since the end of the previous season, and they had a new OL coach, so they were absolutely not ready at all there.

Because of depth concerns they did not have a very physical fall camp, and that hurt.

Also hurt that their HC made know bones out of the fact that, because of their talent, it was Dallas or Bust, and that put a lot of unnecessary pressure on their new OC, and all the high profile newbie players.

This years team is as talented, and probably more talented than last years but again is faced with getting a lot of very talented newbies up to speed, but at least their HC is taking a more low key approach, which should help everyone.

Look for another slow start but their talent almost insures that they will a very good team at some point.
