Quote:Memphis groveled as vigorously as anyone, offering to make a $500 million investment in athletic and academic infrastructure, and sending out a letter from Smith saying that FedEx would be willing to sponsor a Big 12 title game if Memphis were admitted to the conference.

WE didn't offer to make a $500 million investment. We are making a $500 million investment. We have those projects on the books. They are in the master plan. Rudd's been working 5 years on this stuff......

Is this a positive article? Sheesh! How about focus on all the great things going on campus? Maybe highlight a number of the completed projects, those kicking off and a few in the near term that will get done.

You're right, I know.

But this is literally something he could have written last fall.

It's dwelling on a bad experience.

Not his job to write "positive" articles. His job to report on the team be it positive or negative.

It is a wrap up story. Basically saying all of this is in the past and it is time to put it in the past and look forward to what Tigers can do to be the best they can be.

Did a decent job of putting the road blocks ahead for the Tigers out there and CHALLENGING THE SCHOOL TO DEFEAT THOSE ROAD BLOCKS.

While ignoring the positive things the University is doing, and calling our $500 million dollar transformation groveling. A good deal of that money is private donations. I mean. Do you want me to list those projects?

He's knows what he's doing. He's yet again casting the school in a negative light. There's plenty of ways to write that story. He took his time to get a shot in.

You're both "wrong" - Geoff's job is to write stories that generate interest and sell advertising. Right now, his job also includes getting out of the "writing for newspapers business" and is using his content as a resume for his next job - because the "writing is on the wall" in his current industry. Take anything Geoff writes as exactly what it is - self-serving (not that its a bad thing all the time). It doesn't even have to be "true" in the loosest sense (technically/semantically, we did "offer" to make the improvements it in our application - so he wasn't lying - he just formed the words into sentences that better suited his goals). It just has to generate active interest that can be measured in clicks, or subscriptions, or reads, or whatever.

RE: Calkins "With Big 12 dreams dead, Memphis aims to flourish in American Athletic Conf"
Outside of the $500M stat, the article is pretty factual. It's reality, and it's worth understanding.

Our football program has done a great job of thinking outside the box to gain attention and improve performance on the field. It's incredible to see how far we've grown in the last five years. We've literally gone from one of the worst programs in college football to one of the strongest non-P5 skus in the nation (potentially the strongest).

Given the landscape of college football, we're going to need to continue with this trend in order to be successful.

I saw a stat that only 5% on average click through to an article when the link is posted.

2nd paragraph, clearly says Calkins did the article yesterday because it was 1 year to the day since the B12 Presidents changed their minds and again decided to pursue expansion:

"That all began exactly a year ago. With the stunning news that the Big 12 was going to consider expanding to 12 or 14 teams. “It’s a statement from the board that we want to move forward,” Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said."

It's the middle of July, no college or pro football or basketball. He still has to write columns.

This. Contrary to popular belief, it's not his or any other columnists' job to wave the flag for the local university.

The pressure added to Calkins from Gannett being in charge at the CA now certainly is not going to help matters - they are all about bottom line click numbers - one of the worst in the biz.
