Chris Spielman sues Ohio St. on use of images

Looks like another lawsuit the universities will lose:

The lawsuit takes issue with 64 banners hung in Ohio Stadium featuring players’ likenesses and a corporate logo for Honda on them, but it also mentions jerseys, photographs, signatures and more.
Spielman also said attaching his name to Honda puts him in a difficult situation given a separate sponsorship deal he has with a local Mazda dealership.
Spielman said he is fine with Ohio State using his name and likeness for non-commercial purposes.
“You can slap your name and logo on banners all you want,” he said. “But as soon as you slap a corporate logo on there, I have rights, in my opinion, to say yes or no, or to negotiate that.”

All of the academics and knowledge under the roofs at these places... yet still so dumb. State's lucky the guy's down on other uses. He doesn't have to be so kind.

I think I would have accommodated Spielman rather than invite the class action lawsuit. This would give me pause if I was a potential recruit.

Guessing the O'Bannon lawsuit took care of this going forward. IE, players sign away the rights to their NIL for all time, to get a payday when they graduate.

But for past players that didn't sign such an agreement .... guessing they'll hammer out a settlement.

I'm just floored at how stupid this is, or just arrogant. Like, did nobody bother to check whether this was okay, or did the school just kind of say "screw it, if we're wrong, we'll be told to stop." Neither are ways to operate. Especially if you're a non-profit/state institution.
