Sunbelt Transportation and Local Points of Intertest
With some of the first athletic competitions less than a month away now seems a good time to post.

Anyone with a link can edit. Please update as needed. Most of this can be found on the internet without extensive searching, but sometimes a local in the know can offer better suggestions compared to internet searches, especially local POIs.

RE: Sunbelt Transportation and Local Points of Intertest
Neat idea. I sort of catalog every trip I've done before so I can go back to it and remember some favorite spots to eat and drink, especially :)

If anyone goes to Idaho, the flights into Spokane are reasonable. Stayed in Spokane for one night at the Hilton Garden Inn right at the airport. 15 second drive from the rental car lot. Had I known that it was so close I would have waited until the next morning to get the rental. There is a very good restaurant called Longhorn Barbecue on US Hwy 2 right there that had fantastic breakfast. Don't know about their other meals but it was delicious.

Short drive over to Coeur d'Alene and not all that far ultimately to Moscow. Leaving Spokane it was a scenic drive ... had driven to Lewiston to meet up w/ the team and entourage, but that part of that drive toward Moscow is what I would envision an astronaut feels, driving a lunar rover on the moon :)

Feel free to edit and place those suggestions in the Idaho area. Everyone with the link has editing abilities.

I need to input information about SB championships and football bowl games for this academic year but anyone with the link can edit so feel free to add information about the areas you know about.

With a bit of digging most of this can be found on the internet but having a local connection can add some options that may be not so obvious or thought much about.

I did the women's. Some of the hosts not listed.

W Tennis and all T&F not up yet. XCountry is, though.

I'll try to do the men's tomorrow.

All championships added except men's golf; which has not been determined yet.

A lot of SBC sponsored championships this academic year. Most of them easier trips for the western schools.

I need to go in and delete the schools no longer connected to the SB and add the new MSOC school of Central Arkansas. There is a bit of editing to do, but less now that you helped. Thanks.

RE: Sunbelt Transportation and Local Points of Intertest
I have not updated this in a few years. I have added new schools and such. I did some cut and pasting. Hopefully the rows with information are aligned but I am not going to guarantee all of that was done correctly with adding about 8 school counting the affiliates in men's soccer and deleting about 5 schools including NMSU and Idaho from a few years ago and more recent schools leaving the Sun Belt.

Anyone has editing privileges that has the link below. A lot of this can be found with internet searches such as Lycos, AltaVista, or that new startup, Google. But sometimes things are a bit hidden or just not thought about as an option. (Please post pictures if anyone takes a water cruise to a Sun Belt event.)

Guide to Hattiesburg, MS.

Food

Keg and Barrel —> Pub-style local place in an old home. Large wrap around porch with a patio out back with a huge screen. Great selection of beer and cocktails. Recommend getting the Boogie Balls and their Chicken and Waffles or the Sweet and Smoky sandwich.

The Porter Pub —> Another Pub place downtown that brews their own beer in house. The brew master used to be the brew master for Slowboat out of Laurel, MS before they closed up shop. He’s brought their brews (Dairy of a Madman and Into the Mystic) here. Good food and a fun atmosphere. Get their Cookie Dough Egg Rolls for dessert you won’t regret it

The Midtowner —> Midtown. Breakfast diner meets meat and three post church lunch spot. Really good breakfast and lunch spot.

Hattiesburgers and Blues. —> Good burger spot downtown. Sometimes has live music.

Blu Jazz. —> Downtown. Good New Orleans inspired and Southern dishes. Good cocktails as well.

Nellie’s Chicken and Daiquiris. —> Downtown. great lunch or light night spot. Really good chicken and drinks.

Southbound Bagel Co. —> downtown. Breakfast spot. Good bagels and omelettes. A local favorite.

Crescent City. —> Midtown. Good New Orleans and Creole inspired dishes. Highly recommend.

Mugshots. —> Midtown. Sports bar known for its burgers. Great pregame place or a place to watch any game.

Ed’s Burgers. —> Midtown. More gourmet burgers and really solid milkshakes. Fun place to bring the family with games outside.

Glory Bound Gyro Co. —> Good Americanized Greek food. The gyros are solid and are USM students favorites.

TBones Record Store. —> Great sandwiches and coffee. An awesome lunch place to go to before games.

Honorable Mention:

Sully’s (steaks)
Donanelle’s (roadhouse steaks)
Murky Waters
Rose’s Barbecue
Letha’s Barbecue
Trattoria Pizza
Fat Boy’s Pizza
Mario’s Italian
Petra Cafe
Indian Delight
Jutama’s Thai
Sake Cafe
The Depot

El Rayo

Alcohol (and food for most of these places)

Great to know about the Porter Pub. My family is from Laurel and I always liked going to Slowboat when I visited. Dairy is a great beer! Nice to know where to find it again. Thanks!

They’re not known under the same names, but shortened ones that are familiar (I.e just “Madman” or just “Mystic”).

I was glad to find those again as well.

On our visit to Lafayette, we vastly enjoyed Bon Temps Grill. Wonderful Cajun dishes and the Sunday brunch before our flight out was equally enjoyable.

You have excellent tastes, lol. Bon Temp is one of my faves and is pretty popular in the city. It has grown a lot in the past few years, and is currently in the space that was the Blue Dog Cafe for many years. Blue Dog was also very popular, for a long time, but imho they didn’t keep up with the times enough, so it gradually lost more and more customers. Lafayette is a VERY competitive place for restaurants.

I had started to make a list of the LFT restaurants/bars a while back, but it’s not an easy thing to do. But if anyone ever visits and has questions, just ask for feedback…..we love to talk about food almost as much as we enjoy eating it, lol

RE: Sunbelt Transportation and Local Points of Intertest
Okay, for those contemplating a trip to Huntington:

Points of Interest:

Marshall Memorial Fountain
Southern Airways Flight 932 Crash Site
Heritage Farm
Camden Park (WV's only amusement park)
Ritter Park
Beech Fork Lake
Huntington Mall (in Barboursville)

Cuisine - Huntington is a culinary mecca full of non-franchise, top-quality food and drink.

Steak:

21 At the Frederick - (****) ($$$$) Top-shelf cuisine. A high quality American Restaurant with wonderful beef, lamb, chicken, and seafood entrees. Menu changes seasonally.

Savannah's - (****) ($$$$) See above. World renowned wine selection.

Texas Roadhouse/Logan's/Longhorn (***)($$$) - all are away from downtown, but most know what to expect here

Seafood:

Jewel City Seafood (****) ($$$$) - Right downtown. Fresh seafood brought in at least twice a week. Eat in and enjoy the very freshest of seafood and when you are finished...go to the display case and take some fresh seafood with you.

Red Lobster (**) ($$$$) - Overpriced, mostly fried dishes and disappointing lobster

Mexican:

El Ranchito (***) ($$) - Good Mexican food at reasonable prices. Right across from the stadium.

Margarita's (***) ($$) - See above, but close to Jewel City Seafood on 4th Ave

Casa Grande (***) ($$) - Tell 'em Tom Roten sent you. Supposedly fantastic guac. Located across the river in South point, OH

Japanese:

Taste of Asia (****)($$$) - Typical Hibachi with a Chinese side. Better sushi than Hibachi.

Hibachi (***)($$$) - Typical Hibachi with a Chinese side. Better mains than Taste of Asia.

Chinese:

China Garden (**)($$) is the closest, has a buffet, and delivers.

Indian:

Nawab Indian Cuisine (***)($$-$) - Very good Indian food at decent prices. It can get a little pricey going into the lamb dishes, but it is worth it.

Greek:

Navarino Bay (***)($$$) - Good quality Greek food. A little hard to find, as it it in the Marketplace.

Ribs:

Buddy's All-American Barbecue (***)($$) - Pretty good spicy BBQ. Ribs are good. Chips and salsa are awesome.

Italian:

Rocco's Ristorante (****)($$$$) - Located in Ceredo, THIS is WELL WORTH THE TRIP and may I recommend the Frutti di Mare in cream sauce. Best Italian for hundreds of miles.

La Famiglia (***)($$$) - Close to Savannah's on 6th Ave, this little Italian bistro delivers good food and good flavor.

Rocco's Litte Italy (**)($) - Just a little Italian Diner owned and operated by one of Rocco's former employees. Good sandwiches, spaghetti, and some pasta dishes.

Jim's Spaghetti House (***)($$) - Absolutely a must see in Huntington. Rumored to be the restaurant depicted in the movie, JFK ate there along with many other famous faces. The walls are adorned with Huntington history, and the restaurant is FAMOUS for its strawberry pie.

Tex-Mex:

Calamity J's (***)($$) - Just a little Tex-Mex pub with solid apps and good entrees with a little bit for everyone. Close to the stadium. Stop in and Tell Taylor, Luke, Tabby, or Brooklyn hi!

Black Sheep Burritos and Brews (***)(***) - I'd say for a lack of a better word, gourmet tacos and burritos. Worth a visit.

German:

Bahnhof (***)($$$) - Really good German food with an amazing beer menu. Fashioned after an authentic biergarten, I reccomend the jagerschnitzel, the brezel board, and the pretzel.

Pizza:

BACKYARD (****)($$$-$) - Hands down no competition if you are looking for quality gourmet pizza. They also offer wood-grilled oysters, and a sea scallop dish in buerre blanc ... It's amazing

Giovanni's - (***)($$) Local chain -Spicy marinara, good pie (right across from the Joan.)

Al's NY Pizza (***)($$) - NY style pizza from a real NY guy. Good quality pie but he's in Barboursville and doesn't deliver.

Take your pick among the national chains

Burgers:

THE PEDDLER (****)($$$) - Right beside Backyard and owned by the same person. Duck fat fries are to die for and all burgers are fresh. Gourmet burgers to be sure.

Buddy's All-American Barbecue - Fresh Burgers

Calamity J's - Fresh burgers with a twist

Ale House - Fresh burgers as well

Fat Patty's - Frozen Dog Poo smothered with other things to kill the flavor of the burgers

Marshall fans, please feel free to add to the list of anything I have missed. I didn't delve into hot dogs or Pho, but if anyone has questions, please ask.

Gumbo Stop Cafe for our Gulf Coast friends (the owner is from Louisiana I think)

Pizza - Monty's and Evaroni's is tons better than Giovannis. Also Al's is closed down.

Marshall HOF Cafe, Tudor's Biscuits and Frosttop Hotdogs and Hillbilly Hotdogs are a must.

Other than that I agree with what you put out there. I'd add some Barboursville joints like Oscar's Burgers and Tequila Grill.

My personal favorite restaurants are (in no particular order)...
Ale House
Evaroni's
The Peddler
Bahnhoff
Jim's Spaghetti
Rocco's
Frosttop
Hillbilly Hotdogs
Tequila Grill
Tudor's Biscuits

I'm DEBATING (not 100% sure, depends on if the car gets through its maintenance before Saturday) making it down to the USM-ArkSt game, to root for #LaFamilia, so anybody with any good sharin's for on or around campus?

There is an Embassy Suites on campus across from the Arena with a Houlihan's Restaurant and Bar inside of it.

Across Johnson from the stadium is JTown's Grill. https://www.facebook.com/jtownsgrill/

More local flavor near campus that is new locations for some local restaurants is at the corner of Aggie Road and Marion Berry Parkway on the west side of campus (opposite the FB stadium/Arena). I like BA Burrito who now has a location there.

501 Club has good food near Hilton Garden Inn/hotel row a couple miles from campus off of Red Wolf Blvd.

The rest is downtown on Main St. which isn't that far - also a couple miles. Omar's is good there. https://www.omarsuptown.com/

Jonesboro has come a long way when it comes to nightlife and restaurants. It's become one of my favorite trips, believe it or not. All of the above suggestions are great.

And, that Embassy Suites is the nicest one of it's kind I've ever stayed at.

However, if you're going to drink, Arkansas charges about a 30% tax on alcohol purchases (and technically, Craighead County is dry, so you can't go buy it in the stores.)
