That could give a home game for the #7 and #8 seeds on Day 1.

Day 1
Game 1: #9 at #8
Game 2: #10 at #7

Then Day 2 could see home games at #1, #2, #3 and #4 seeds.

Day 2
Game 3: Game 1 Winner at #1
Game 4: #5 at #4
Game 5: Game 2 Winner at #2
Game 6: #6 at #3

Days 3 and 4 would be held at central tourney site.

Day 3
Game 7: Game 3 Winner vs Game 4 Winner
Game 8:Game 5 Winner vs Game 6 Winner

Day 4
Game 9: Game 7 Winner vs Game 8 Winner

However, the tourney site venue (FedExForum for example) might bid on the tourney with the anticipation of 4 days worth of revenue as opposed to only 2 days.

You could also structure it so that only Day 1 games are played at campus sites with Days 2, 3 and 4 being held at the tourney site venue.

I figure with conference sizes growing and college attendance declining, we may see this sooner rather than later. Logistics is the big challenge, the way I see it. Playing a game then traveling to a new site for another game the next day will be tough to manage and on the players. May have to spread the first 2 rounds out with travel days after each.

I don't see why that wouldn't work.

Many states have high schools using that format. Sorta like the NIT functions.

Yeah, I understand the logic but why be like the high schools & NIT. ACC permanent location, BE, permanent location - I prefer that logic. And if it draws the best attendance & most central location, all the better.

And, not to mention, that way favors us!

You're seriously misguided if you think the American will give any thought to on-campus conference tournament rounds.

There are plenty of worse leagues that won't even think about doing that.

Call me misguided. College event attendance trends are slipping. And if conferences continue to grow in size, this model would make absolute sense. At least for a play-in round for the bottom 4 seeds. Wouldn't be surprised to see this widespread within 10 years.

I tend to agree.

But is it happening? No. Will we see it happen? I think it would be a decent enough idea, but I doubt it.

With tourneys games being back to back it is going to be tough on players traveling and impossible for fans to get to the second game. Say Memphis is the top seed and wins its home game and the second game is in Orlando.

That's going to be a tough turnaround for fans and much more expensive for the schools

They might schedule a travel day? IF the tournament went to on campus games there might be games played on Monday to pare the field to 8 teams then on Wednesday to get to the 4 semi-final teams then play Saturday & Sunday at the central site to crown the champion,.

My previous post had my ideas about this. You'd have to spread the tourney out to allow travel days for every change of venue. And I think - at least theoretically - the travel cost would net to zero.

Say you have a 14-team league. First round, could be two play-in games on Monday. #14 would travel to #11, and #13 would travel to #12. (2 teams travel.) Second round on Wednesday, you'd have the two winners travel one each to #5 and #6. (2 teams travel.) At the same time, you'd have #9 travel to #8, and #10 travel to #7. (2 teams travel.) Third round on Friday, you'd have the four winners travel to the tourney site, where the remaining #1 thru #4 have also traveled. (8 teams travel.) So that means 14 teams have traveled in total - same as if 14 had traveled to a neutral location at the same time. Semis on Saturday, Finals on Sunday.

Or you could do a flatter bracket. Give the top 2 teams byes. Have the bottom 6 travel to the #3 thru #8. Then have the 6 winners travel to the tourney location where #1 and #2 also traveled. Same result, 14 teams travel. You could wait until Wednesday to start the first round without the play-in game. Travel Thursday. Tourney location Friday through Sunday.

Would work in theory. Better attendance for first 1-2 rounds at home courts. Same travel cost. Tourney site still gets quarters, semis, finals over 3-day weekend.

RE: Memphis hosting 2019 AAC tourney
you get a network to pay for it then it can happen...conf tournaments over a week or 10 days vs. 4 day format now. tv money may offset the travel cost of the lower seeds traveling for "on campus" 1st/ 2nd round games

I get the logic that it might increase attendance (if folks can get there) but for those schools not having OC arenas (& even some of them), short term notice availability would likely be an issue, not to mention the unlikely availability of rooms & transportation for fan travel.

What fans? The suck teams generally don't bring more than a handful.

This idea could very easily be made to work but its very unlikely to ever be implemented.

RE: Memphis hosting 2019 AAC tourney
Correct above...and these are not new points.

The NCAA tourney emphasis has damaged the seasons and the conference tourneys, with the rare exception when a host team is a bubble team. Of course there are fun regular games etc...but with I phone style lack of patience in general growing, the regular games will take on less appeal for the foreseeable future.

Football bowls too. While regular season college football games seem to still be monstrous, as they are events to themselves, even the major bowls seem to have taken a hit recently. Anecdotally speaking, you see a lot more empty seats at the non playoff New Years bowl games, with the exception of the Rose Bowl.

It is what it is. Apple has been great...and terrible.

I think they have diluted bowl games by just simply having a bowl game for anyone that wants one. There were 34 Non CFP bowl games, and 41 if you include them. That covers around 80 teams, which is way over half of the D1 programs. Narrow it down to 15-20 games, and having a winning record mandatory. I don't want to watch two no name schools with losing records play a horrible game!

1"A total of 41 team-competitive postseason games were played, including the national championship game. To fill the 80 available bowl slots, a record 20 teams (25% of all participants) with non-winning seasons participated in bowl games—17 had a .500 (6-6) season, and three sub-.500 (one 6-7 and two 5-7) teams were required. For example, none of the six teams that played in bowls on December 26 had a winning record. This was the seventh time in the past nine years that teams with losing records have participated in bowl games."
