Revenues might be technically correct, but very misleading since it seems to be REALLY expenditures.

Revenues are income + budget transfers needed to 'balance the budget.' "Phony revenues".

In the case of EMU, it appears the budget amount is 30M and 6M is true income from all sources.

I have reason to believe that the true hard dollars in that 30M is really around 18M. Believe the rest could be scholarships, etc. which don't require a cash payment.

If my understanding is correct, EMU spends 18M in hard dollars and receives 6M from the MAC (including CFP, basketball playoffs, ESPN rights), road game guarantees, donor funds, etc. etc.

IF my understanding is correct, EMU has a net cash shortfall of about 12M + the value of tuition scholarships which doesn't require cash payment. (I see no reason why athletics, biology, chemistry, psychology, etc. needs to be charged back for whatever tuition scholarships the university gives. I see it as a university wide budget expense.).

RE: USA Today athletic dept. revenues
My first impression of the numbers would be to say congrats to W.Michigan for posting the largest expenditure in the MAC.

The "other" category is one of confusion. When it's an expense it represents debt service. When it's a revenue it represents a payment to the debt service to cover the budget.

If you disregard debt and the means of paying for it as part of the budget the numbers look different.

Revenue (what the program is bringing in)
-Ticket Sales
-Contributions
-Rights/Licensing

Expense (what the program is spending)
-Coaching Staff
-Scholarships
-Facilities & Overhead

Then you have a better idea as to the operating gap.

I agree.

Just think EMU probably gets 400 English 101 students compliments of the athletic department.

If we didn't have athletics, our enrollment of frosh would probably drop say 400 (assuming 400 of our athletes come as frosh) and that would deplete the ranks of the underclass classes required of frosh.

Hear you Kittonhead, we are very similar to OHIO in so many ways, including the revenue piece.
