Why the 2017 Football Season is So Important
This football season represents the 5th season since the last round of realignment, and C-USA's incarnation with the current line-up. Almost every player on our rosters were recruited to play in the current configuration of C-USA. As a conference our football success will be a direct result of the caliber of player our conference attracts, and the caliber of commitment our universities have made to strengthening our programs. This football season should set a standard for where we can expect C-USA to finish as a conference in comparison to our peers. I believe we will rank among the best football conferences outside of the "guaranteed access" conferences.

Thoughts?

We need SOMEBODY from C-USA to go to the Access Bowl this year. Even the MAC has sent a team and received the money and exposure that goes with that. We will always be an insignificant "also ran" until we get this done a few times.

Probably sad the same thing before AD started his first game. Probably saying the same thing after Nick's first two seasons. We're fine at QB.

Agreed. C-USA needs to earn the access bowl this season. As of now, only C-USA and the Belt have yet to earn it. That isn't good company if we are trying to elevate our perception.

RE: Why the 2017 Football Season is So Important
WKU has the schedule this year to achieve a NY6 Bowl. If the team beats Illinois on the road in its 2nd game then watch out. Not that Illinois is that good, but it will signal that the new coaching staff and the players are on the same page and will continue to get better as the season goes along. WKU at Vandy may determine WKU's faith in the the NY6 race.

I think LA Tech could make it as well with their schedule. Beating State and South Carolina would be highly regarded by the media.

wow, true. easy schedule. whoever you'd play in the CUSA champ game won't be a powerhouse either. this is your year. however, the new coaching staff could make things a little more difficult than they look. time will tell.

I see where you're going with this topic but I think it would be more telling in another 2-3 years. Same concepts. I also think that determining how good conferences are as a whole compared to others is so subjective that it's hard to really say this one is better than this one.

No actually what WE all need to do is fight for real access and not just a bowl game... though it has been a nice step in the direction we all need to be moving in.

On the topic of U of I, I would t be surprised to see WKU win. Illinois QB situation is shaky at best. RBs too. WR irrelevant unless QB shakes out. Online is solid so thats going to help whomever is behind it. D-line only returns 2 players from last year. LBs and secondary are pretty solid but not great. So to say that U of I will be favored is a stretch at best.

Give Illinois 2 more years and they will be near top of Big 10. Yea I said it and I mean it. Stay tuned just not this year. Prob 5 maybe 6 wins this year possibly if they beat WKU.

I think this season is when we should start seeing a real pecking order among the non-guaranteed conferences. Just about every player on our rosters was recruited to play in this configuration of C-USA. I believe how we preform on the field this season, will be a fairly good indication of what we will be seeing over the next 2-3 years and beyond.

As for comparing conferences, you are right. I should have been more clear. This topic is only focused on the football field. I will correct that in my initial post.

I got ya. The reason I say wait another 2-3 years is because yes all the players were under this configuration but there was still a lot of potential turmoil around schools transferring to other conferences. That is why I said give it another couple years. I get your point through.

Coaching is always a difference maker...especially a brand new head coach. I expect Western losing 1 or more games from decision making alone. Unless talent is just better than anyone else. I don't see that...at least not till we see how the RBs and WRs turnout.

This should year should be as good on defense as last year. Which gives room for mistakes. Last year I was confident heading into the season. This year is a wait and see for me.
