ESPN3 is likely to become the primary TV outlet for ODU football and basketball
Five of ODU’s nine football games now set for TV will be streamed on ESPN3, and it appears likely that early season games against Albany and at Massachusetts also will be on ESPN3. So might ODU’s first trip to Virginia Tech.

Although ESPN has an agreement to stream C-USA games, TV production is left up to the schools. And the Worldwide Leader in Sports won’t stream your games until you prove you do quality broadcasts, including using multiple cameras. In something of a test run, a number of ODU football, basketball and baseball games were streamed on ESPN3 last season, and the Monarchs’ production proved to be pretty proficient.

Happy that we have something reliable to watch for the games that weren't on TV. ASN and BeIN were hit and miss and i like Twitter broadcasts too. One thing is for sure we need to step up in broadcast quality. I like UTSA's and Charlotte's broadcasts on CUSA TV a lot better than ODU's and i hope our AD saw that and is pushing for a better one this time around.

At this point, having every game on ESPN3 would be a huge step up.

I have been saying this for years. Tech better get their butts in gear and get a top notch production set up or we will get left behind.

We are in the same boat. 6 of UNT's games are currently scheduled to air on ESPN3.

If you can't be on TV, ESPN3 is the best option. I'm still baffled by the fact that ODU had just as good, or better TV coverage as an FCS school though. If the AAC and MWC continue to get decent coverage, then the issue is clearly with Judy. If they are relegated to E3 for the most part too, then maybe thats just life in the G5 world these days.

ESPN3 is a great way for fans to watch games, but a lousy way for casual users to stumble across us. Since I have come to accept that primetime TV is not really an option for the G5, streaming a well produced game is perfect.

I think the days of stumbling across games these days are getting fewer and fewer. Flipping through channels to find a game is not the way of doing things anymore. Just being somewhere accessible for the biggest audience possible is the best we can do, and having the name brand of ESPN helps.

If E3 is indeed our outlet, I hope we can get some actual TV broadcasters to do the games, rather than just run a synched radio feed over the video. TV is a different animal than radio. Radio requires that every little detail of the game be described, while in TV you don't need as much talking, and the color analysis and side stories about players, coaches etc become much more important. I find a radio feed over video to be annoying. Better than nothing, but almost distracting when trying to actually watch the game. Our announcers are great for radio though.

This sums it up for me.

Speaking of Mashaw, how common is it to have a color commentator/analyst who didn't play college football or coach? Gotta imagine that's pretty rare.

I found his more interesting....

Beach Arena to close soon on loans

Developers of a planned Virginia Beach Arena told the City Council this spring that they planned to close on $150 million in construction loans for the 18,000-seat facility in June. Although that closing has now been delayed until July, officials say they are on target to start construction this fall.

Sept. 7 is the city’s deadline for the loans to be finalized, and officials say they’ll make the deadline with time to spare.

Andrea Kilmer, CEO and President of United State Management, said earlier this month that no major obstacles remain. “It just takes time to dot all of the i’s and cross all the t’s,” she said.

Officials hope that S.B. Ballard Construction can begin infrastructure work in August and that the arena will open in September of 2019.

So starting in 2020 there shouldn't be any reason ODU is not the site of the CUSA tourney. Still a 30 minute drive for the girls if they play at ODU but I like this setting. Other than 18k in seats will be 4x more than needed. Still too cold for beach actives but the views will be great from your hotel. Plus some great fishing on the bay and if the seas are not rough..off shore

Thing is is that the beach arena would be waaaaaaaaay overkill for what C-USA needs. The best chance for ODU to host a tourney is for us to wait for the MEAC to run out its deal with the Scope and do it then.

Not sure I see the MEAC leaving the Scope any time soon. It has been a pretty successful partnership for all parties. But I wanted to note that Norfolk is considering expanding the Scope. Not sure how they'll fund it with so many other projects in the works but they are considering it.

Considering MEAC headquarters is based in Norfolk, VA... that might be a hard sell.

I think the VB arena is aiming for larger targets. I would be so hyped if they land the ACC tournament - capacity is not far off from where they plan on playing.

2017 and 18: Barclays 17.7k
2019: Spectrum 19k
2020: Greensboro 23k

But yeah if they settle for CUSA tournament I'd obviously be more stoked, I just think having the tournament in a corner of the geography of the conference isn't exactly fair. I think we have a couple of other threads about that though

A10 is also interested in the VB arena. And since their HQ are in Newport News, that seems like a good possibility.
