Intentionally tanking for draft picks and then burner twitter accounts.... yeah.... and folks don't think the NBA is rigged....

Cavs can't buy a shot and from what I have seen in the last few minutes of the game, they aren't hustling for loose balls to help themselves out.

RE: 2017-18 NBA thread: Episode IV: Warriors vs. Cavs
I saw a defeated team on the floor for Game 4. Low energy especially on defense. This series loss really started at the end of Game 1 from which they never recovered. The bottom line, Golden State was clearly the better team with more star talent, depth and superior in every phase of the game. You just have to take your hat off to them. The bigger question is, can anyone knock them off in the next several seasons assuming KD stays with them? They are treading on a great dynasty after winning 3 of the last 4 championships.

After game 1 the Cavs really showed no effort aside from LeBron. They definitely were not hustling to the ball tonight and basically played like they were a defeated team.

It's being reported that KD might want "his own" team and so not a given that he will stay in GS.

So he won't fire himself? I mean he basically strong armed the Cavs into bringing in all these chumps..... and then the Cavs decided to overpay overrated chumps. Bad contracts and bad play.
He certainly has a lot of pull but he's also smart enough to know Golden State isn't relying on their players to assemble a superteam while the GM sits back and watches. LBJ just needs to ally himself with the best owner/manager team and stick to his job of being the GOAT player.
The Warriors' GM and the previous GM deserve a lot of credit, but it's also one of those "Rome wasn't built in a day" things. Curry was drafted by the Warriors in 2009, Klay Thompson in 2011, Draymond Green in 2012. Those guys were there for years before Durant was signed.
So if Bron is going to move to try to win titles, then, like KD, he wants to go to a place where he is the final major piece, not to a place where they start building around him after he gets there.
the warriors never needed durant
They lost a finals to a healthy Cavs team before they had him. They haven't lost in 2 finals with him.

This was basically the 2001 NBA Finals all over again, except Iverson was able to pull out the first game while Lebron had it swept under the rug from him.
I get why some people are into the NBA, my brother for instance started following it closely after the Rams left. But the sheer predictability really ruins it for me, I admire the skill of teams like the Warriors but even when hockey or baseball have teams win their championship frequently (e.g. Blackhawks, Giants) there's an element of randomness inherent to the game. College hoops has it as well, though that's mostly from the post-season setup.

You must be too young to remember the Yankees winning 4 World Series in 5 years, the last 3 of those by 4-0, 4-0, and 4-1. The one they lost in that span was a 7-game series in which they were the better team but lost because of odd occurrences, like the Warriors' 7-game loss a few years ago. In both cases, though, that just proves that the best team usually but not always wins a playoff series.

I think it's a given he will at least "consider" what options are out there but what was reported last night after the game is he wants to return to the Warriors. If he desires the easiest path to more championships in the next 2-3 years then he need look no further than Oakland, California. There's also a lure to building a dynasty legacy that the Warriors are in the conversation of especially if they win at least one more championship in the next two years. That said, he could pull a LeBron and take his talents to...I'd put my money on he stays to win another championship and then looks to make his own mark somewhere else.

In hockey, if you go back further there was a run on three championship dynasties from 1976 to 1990. The Montreal Canadiens won four in a row between 76 and 79, then the New York Islanders won 4 in a row between 80 and 83 and then the Edmonton Oilers won 5 out of the next 7 Stanley Cups through 1990 with The Great One. I guess if you're a purist, that may not have been the most exciting of times. However, I can always appreciate winning from great teams, with great players from great organizations as well.

If you had watched the earlier rounds, it was anything but predictable. There were three 7-game series including 2 for CLE and 1 for GSW. KD could go to Houston and flip the table on the Warriors and still get more rings.
P.S. I would also love to listen in on some upcoming LBJ/KD phone calls..

RE: 2017-18 NBA thread: Episode IV: Warriors vs. Cavs
Basketball as a sport is inherently less predictable just in how it's designed, and the current financial structure of the league basically incentivizes tanking for draft picks if you're unable to land a superteam. Basketball is a great sport, but the sheer inevitability of the same team winning every year saps a lot of the interest for me, and that goes for other sports as well when they're in periods of extreme dynasties.

The reason there is tanking in US pro sports is that tanking is rewarded, when it should be punished. In the Premier League or La Liga, if you have the worst record, your team is relegated and might not return for many years if ever. In our pro leagues, we reward tankers like the Astros with top draft picks that can lead to championships.
Want to stop tanking? Put the Phoenix Suns in the G-League next season, instead of giving them the best available rookie.

I don't know what the ownership structure is like in those soccer leagues you mentioned, but if I dropped a cool billion on a franchise, NFW am I going to stand for 'relegation.' Besides, there is no guarantee of tanking actually working. How has that strategy helped the Knicks, Nets and Kings?

My issue with tanking is I see a difference in that if you played out your season and you have been mathematically eliminated from a playoff spot then your finals games don't mean much versus lets suck the whole year in hopes for a lotto ball to get a #1 draft pick. To me, there is something disingenuous with playing like that.

That's one issue. The existing U.S. system benefits franchise owners, even if it benefits no one else. Knowing that a terrible and terribly run franchise can't be dropped out of the club in which everyone receives a big pile of TV revenue supports billion-dollar franchise valuations.
The flip side is that there is no downside to tanking and an upside that has been demonstrated very recently by the 76ers as well as the Astros, and the quality of the leagues overall is diminished. There were 9 NBA teams this year that had fewer than 30 wins, and the only reason that some of them were even close to 30 wins is that they had to play many games amongst themselves.
Tanking is a far bigger threat to the overall fan experience than whether or not LeBron plays for a different team next season, but sadly there will be 1,000 times more attention paid to LeBron's offseason than to anything about tanking.
