RE: Phil Steele - % of Tackles Returning
One interesting note for Troy at Boise in Game 1 ...

1. Troy (98.7%) - Yards Gained on Offense Returning
122. Boise State (40.2%) - Tackles Made on Defense Returning

RE: Phil Steele - % of Tackles Returning
Interesting that 111 teams are over 50% (or maybe that's to be expected for some reason and I don't realize it).

Losing Ukeme Eligwe and Ironhead Gallon probably made ours so low, lol.

Probably a strong correlation between loss of LB and Safeties.

RE: Phil Steele - % of Tackles Returning
I would like to see a study showing the correlation between returning anything and success. If your defense/offense was terrible, you don't necessarily want to return everyone. I know that theoretically every player should improve from one year to the next but I would be surprised if these stats always work in a team's favor.

Obviously, bad talent is bad talent, as it is with coaching. I think some inferences can be made. Teams like Clemson that lose most of their offensive talent will struggle, at least early. These types of charts aren't helpful mid to late season when experience starts to set it.

In Game 1 where Troy returns everyone on offense except a walk on receiver who played very little, where Boise loses 60% of their defense, is a match up worth considering. After Game 4 or 5, these charts start to mean very little I think.

Georgia Southern was ranked at or near the top in % yards returning in 2016.

Yeah. Terrible coaching. I believe they've fixed that issue. SBC is going to be very very tough this year.

RE: Phil Steele - % of Tackles Returning
I remember being excited in 2015 that Clemson had lost 6 or 7 guys off of their first team defense, including 2 out of 3 linebackers and Vic Beasley. We all know how that worked out. Their 2015 defense was one of the top units in the nation.

This is how I would rate the importance of experience by position, just based upon experience with my team and what I hear from people who are supposed to be experts.

1. Corner (don't see a whole lot of true freshmen playing this position)
2. Quarterback (it's #1 depending on what offense you run, some systems don't take a lot of reps to master, see Johnny Manziel and Jameis Winston)
3. Offensive Line (again, could depend on offensive scheme, but GS always has a rough start when restarting there).
4. Safety (obviously it can depend on whether they have more of a SS or FS role)
5. Middle linebacker
6. Outside Linebacker
7. Defensive End
8. Wide Receiver
9. Defensive Tackle
10. Running Back

29% of our returning tackle percentage is 2 guys.
London was #3 in the nation in TPG but most times it's not a good thing when you're top 2 tacklers (and 1/3 of the team total) are ILBs. It means too many plays are getting behind the DLine.
