The East? Not so much. Last bowl appearances for FIU (2011 Sun Belt), FAU (2008 Sun Belt) and Charlotte (never).

Imagine how much better the West teams records would be if we could pad them with three gimme wins every year.

To be fair isn't UNT one of those gimme wins? Lets be honest the only fans excited about UNT going to a bowl last year were UNT. A 5 win team should not be bowling. Other than the 2013 season UNT has been one of the worse team in FBS over the last 12 years. Just as I said...gimme win.

Since 2014....

UNT 3.3-9
FAU 3-9
FIU 4.3 -7.6

Wins over the last 10 years

UNT
2016 CUSA 5
2015 CUSA 1
2014 CUSA 4
2013 CUSA 9
2012 Sun Belt 4
2011 Sun Belt 5
2010 Sun Belt 3
2009 Sun Belt 2
2008 Sun Belt 1
2007 Sun Belt 2

FIU
2016 CUSA 4
2015 CUSA 5
2014 CUSA 4
2013 CUSA 1
2012 Sun Belt 3
2011 Sun Belt 8
2010 Sun Belt 7
2009 Sun Belt 3
2008 Sun Belt 5
2007 Sun Belt 1

FAU
2016 CUSA 3

2013 CUSA 6
2012 Sun Belt 3

I guess this is the post where I point out to the WKU folks that our all time record is knotted up at 4-4, despite all of the games taking place in the aforementioned decade of suck. And it took the best two teams in the history of your school just to tie it up.

OK! and what does that have to do with anything you or I posted? Before you start calling other schools "gimme games" you should make sure you're not one yourself. The programs you point to all started football...let me repeat that STARTED playing football in the last 13 years and both have as good or better record as UNT over that span.

As for Western...you keep beating your chest on that head to head. But lets be honest that has to be the weakest come back to ever take place on a sports board 03-lmfao You should be ashamed to even typed that.

I guess the thread doesn't run so true with this one

But to get back on track, your premise was that the East was a loaded gauntlet and the West was an LT cakewalk, yet you only list one "gimme" in the west (UNT) while conceding three in the East.

You listed the gimme..I countered to show you shouldn't point fingers when that finger can easily be pointed back.

But if you want me to I can name two others in the West...the last couple years that would be Rice and UTEP. Lets hope that changes this year...and it just might. But to me Rice wont get better till they make a coaching change. UTEP is one of those schools that surprises you when you look at their history. With their fan support I never would have expected them to be as bad as they shown historically.

New year and things can change fast....Western went from o-26 to 7,7,8,8,12,11 wins. So maybe some of those at the bottom can start winning more often.

No team stays on top (or bottom) forever. Things can change for a program very quickly. The bottom dwellers of a conference today will one day be on top of that conference, and the opposite is true of the top teams in a conference.

Still, there's nothing wrong with enjoying the good times while you've got em.

(06-18-2017 09:50 PM)Volkmar Wrote:  Rice University is undoubtedly an outlier in our conference, and I'm not just talking academically. As a former member of the Southwest Conference, and facing P5's like Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Arkansas, TCU, and Baylor in all conference sports, they (like Houston and SMU) once brushed shoulders with the 'big boys' before the Southwest Conference dissolved in 1996.

So I can't help but think that their scheduling tendencies might, in some aspects, reflect a feeling among the Rice brass that since they were once part of something much bigger, perhaps they want to continue facing that caliber of schools when possible. I can imagine it must've been like a punch in the gut to the likes of Houston, Rice, and SMU to be cast aside at realignment and essentially be demoted to a G5 designation after such a distinguished association and history.

The older Rice Owls' alumni on this board can certainly speak more on this than I can, as I'm doing a bit of psychoanalysis here, but it almost seems as though there's something nostalgic to Rice Football supporters who've supported the program for at least 2-3 decades to face the programs they were once associated with. And perhaps they seek them out more often than the rest of us do because we've never at any point been a member of "The Club".
I think you are definitely on to something.
However, the overriding reason we schedule the way we do is money. We had 2 body bag games at College Station recently and, yes, they are our academic peers and old rivals, but the million dollar paychecks were the big reasons we volunteered for the beatings.
Our alumni base is tiny compared to just about any CUSA school. Our students would preferentially stay in their rooms and watch Game of Thrones than attend a football game.
We need the payout for games against P5 teams. Plain and simple. It might be nostalgic and it might massage our egos to play peer institutions like Texas and A$M, but the paychecks are the real reason.

IIRC, it was so bad the Ticks put their backups in.
