Spectacularly Unspectacular
A-State in P5 road games...

Stolen from bojo1324 @ astatenation board...

Quote:I'm specifically talking P5 on the road, because that's the type of game we have this year with Nebraska.
Actually, at Indiana in 2010. Lost 36-34. Year before the Iowa game.
Since 2005, 1-21 in road P5 games.
From 2005 to 2010, 1-11. Avg score: 32.8-15.2
Since 2011, 0-10. Avg score: 41.8-15.6

Since we've gone on our spree of conference dominance, we've actually been worse against P5 on the road.
Closest game in the last six seasons, losing by 15 at Tennessee in a game that we never felt like we were in.

Wondering how far off from the normal this is for other Sun Belt teams?

The only qualifier I would add would be who we played during that stretch...
2005- @Mizzou, @Oklahoma State (No excuses here, Troy took care of both around the same time)
2006- @Auburn (11-2)
2007- @Texas (10-3), @Tenn (10-4)
2008- @Texas A&M (Our only W...ever) @ Alabama (12-2)
2009- @Nebraska (10-4, Suh was there) @Iowa (11-2),
2010- @Auburn (won NC) @Indiana (5-7, lost 34-36)
2011- @Illnois (7-6), @VT (11-3)
2012- @Oregon (12-1) @Nebraska (10-4)
2013- @Auburn (12-2 lost NC title game), @Mizzou (12-2)
2014- @Tenn (7-6), @Miami (6-7)
2015- @USC (8-6),
2016- @Auburn (8-5)

We've actually regressed when it comes to being competitive in these games...03-puke

Looking at who you played over those years I would say 1 to 5 wins would be the tops for any Sun Belt team during the same time period. What we all have to do is learn from these games and do better going forward. Especially when it comes to smart scheduling.

You've regressed in non-conference games. Time to turn that one around this year.

RE: Spectacularly Unspectacular
So for USA's 4 FBS years we are 1-3 with an average score of 34-17. We nearly pulled off a win at Tennessee in our first full FBS season, pulled off a close win at Mississippi State last year, and got creamed in our other two games.

2013
-7 @Tennessee (lost 31-24)

2014:
-25 @South Carolina (lost 37-12)

2015:
-39 @Nebraska (lost 48-9)

2016:
+1 @Mississippi State (won 21-20)

I suppose the Michigan win distorted people's thinking, but I just shake my head when people bust on App for their lackluster P5 record. Especially considering the overwhelming number of those games came during our FCS/1-AA days. Six of the last 10 P5 team we faced were ranked #12 or better. The other four were Michigan, Florida, Georgia & NC State. It shouldn't be hard to understand why a team with 22 less scholarships - filled with players few P5's gave a second thought to and a budget dwarfed by those in P5 guys would struggle to beat them.

As far as I'm concerned, App's vs P5 or even G5 clock was reset once your first kickoff in FBS commenced.

Since 2005, ULM has been:

3-29 on the road against P5 teams (wins over Alabama, Arkansas, Wake Forest), 4-28 if you count a vacated game with Alabama in 2006

3-17 best stretch on the road against P5's (2007-2013)

Best game @P5 school since 2013: 21-16 loss to Texas A&M, 2014

Don't think it'll get better playing at Florida State and Auburn in 2017.

Since our move up to FBS we've been extremely more competitive despite having not won one yet:

NCState, GT x 2, WVU, UGA, Ole Miss

We are 0-6 in that stint, but the average score is 34-21. Take out the 44-0 shellacking from WVU and it's 32-26, thinking about all those close ones make me sick.

Could have easily been at least 3-3 in that stretch.

You don't know sick. We lead a ranked LSU team at LSU 31-3 late in the 3rd QTR and lost 40-31. They scored 30+ in the 4th. Ridiculous. That was 9 years ago.

I forgot about that game.
