RE: OU Coach Bob Stoops retires
Wow, didn't see that coming (at least not immediately).

Gary Patterson moves up to 2nd longest tenured coach in the country after Ferentz at Iowa. Of course that excludes Bill Snyder because he is technically only at K-State since 2009 in the tenure rankings, but total time at K-State obviously much longer.

RE: OU Coach Bob Stoops retires
Barry Tremel, of the Oklahoman that broke the story, was just on Finebaum.

Says he thought Sttops was waiting for the right time to announce his retirement as he didn't want to steal any spotlights away from other OU athletic programs at the time.

What'll be interesting to me is how competitive will OU be without Stoops? Will they fall drastically down to the Big 12 norm? How will that affect its recruiting and overall value?

Well outside of the Schnellenberger/John Blake era Oklahoma has generally been conference title if not national title competitive.

Will certainly be interesting to see how Lincoln Riley does as a 33 year old head coach in a very high pressure situation (a fan base that is used to and expects to win at a high level).

I would expect Oklahoma to make a change pretty quickly if it is evident Riley isn't working out. It is a attractive enough job for them to hire a good to great sitting head coach.

RE: OU Coach Bob Stoops retires
Check this realignment schedule out.

Assume B12?loses OU to SEC and WVU to the ACC.

Big 12 remains at 8 members, plays six conference games, 6 Ooc games. Schedules tough for more TV earnings.

Here would be Texas' Yearly schedule:
Conference || Baylor, TCU, OSU, KSU, KU, ISU
Perm. Nonconf. || OU, A&M, Ark
Free nonconf. ||3 games

15 member SEC enters into a 9 game conference schedule with 4 yearly rivals and rotates the other 10 every two years; home and away every 4 years

Team || yearly opponents || yearly nonconf opponents
Alabama || Tenn, Aub, LSU, MSU,
Arkansas || A&M, Mizzou, OU, Ole || Texas
Aub || Ala, Ga, Fl, Tenn
Fl || Ga, Tenn, Aub, SC || FSU
UGa || Aub, FL,SC, UK || GT
UK || UGa, MSU, V, Mizz || L'ville
LSU || Ala, A&M, Ole, MSU
Mizz || Ark, OU, A&M, UK || KU
OU || A&M, Ark, Mizz SC || OSU, Texas
Ole || MSU, LSU, Ark, V
MSU || Ole, LSU, Ala, UK
SC || UGa, FL, V, OU || Clemson
Tenn || Ala, Aub, FL, V
A&M || Ark, OU, LSU, Mizz || Texas
V || Tenn, SC, UK, Ole

This should be a major win.
1. Fox gets some better B12 inventory to show with permanent B12 OOC games versus historic SEC rivals.
2. B12 pay fluctuates depending on quality of nonconf schedule. Encourages strong match ups with 6 open dates a year.
3. SEC gets OU
4. SEC gets to play every school every other year
5. SEC enters into a 4 team conference playoff (more $, only one school enters National playoffs)
6. ACC does same with WVU, ND remains football independent
7. B12 champion plays best non P5 school in a game to boost chances of reaching national playoffs.

ACC would fall apart before they added WVU.

RE: OU Coach Bob Stoops retires
A Facebook friend had an interesting idea:

Notre Dame hires Stoops.

If this is a legit "retirement" than obviously not going to happen, but the timing is just weird enough that after an off year I could see it.

I saw on Twitter where one of the big OU supporters said Stoops had purchased a house in Chicago this past year. I thought that was interesting.

As young as he is, wouldn't shock me to see him take another job at some point.

I have a lot of friends who are OU fans (my dad actually worked at OU) and the house in Chicago from everything i'm hearing is legit.

Northwestern would be a nice low pressure gig, but I don't see Pat Fitzgerald leaving anytime soon and NU wouldn't fire him even if it did mean being able to hire Stoops.

It's his second home purchase in Chicago. The other one is right next door.

$2.5 million for a few extra bedrooms? Maybe he has or hopes to have lots of grandchildren.

He might have bought it for his brother who isn't likely to hold his job at OU after next year. 03-wink
