FWIW, the start time change is better for us since students can show up to the game after going uptown for day drinking.

Here's what I'm wondering about Fickell. When he was interim head coach he took over a 12-1 team that had a litany of NFL talent. He lost to Purdue and should've lost to Toledo, going 6-7. The next season they went 12-0. I've never heard of another example of someone inheriting that kind of talent doing that poorly, the only comparison I can think of is that guy at Arkansas after Petrino motorcycled himself but even they only won 3 games the next season. And outside of one season at Akron, he's spent 15 of 17 years in his career at a blue blood with nearly unlimited resources and was never trusted to be an independent DC even after being the freakin head coach. The guy is a big name and I don't think the guy will be bad necessarily, but do you really think this guy is the next Kelly when you no longer have a BCS conference like he had?

So...

1. The 2011 Team had problems outside of the Talent. They lost starters in many key places, other players weren't ready to play yet, and the team discipline was quite poor. He was thrown into a bad situation and kept the ship afloat. You can argue that while the season was poor, he did keep around the players afterwards to build that 12-0 team the following year. Also, it was 6 years ago. I hope he's learned something in the past 6 years on how to run a program. Right now, he's doing all things right.

2. He's been getting looked at, but he does have a large family. It's hard to move them every few years, and the location has to be right for him. Sounds like he's had the eyeballs on the UC job for a while.

3. Urban Meyer kept him and only him around from the previous staff that was at Ohio State before he got there. That has to say something.

I like him so far. He has great character and personality. He's playing the recruiting game extremely well, and the players so far seem to love him. I agree it will come down to his in game decision making, but it feels like he has brought in the staff to help him do that. The Jury is still out, but so far, He is doing great.

In judging him solely on what he's done at UC since the day he's been hired, he's an absolute A+. Recruiting has been fundamentally changed in a way people thought wasn't possible given our conference situation. Motivation of current players is night and day compared to the old regime. If feels like he woke a monster.

That gives me confidence he'll figure out the in-game coaching part when the time comes. He has a litany of big time coaches surrounding him who will help with that part.

10 out of 10. Would recommend.

I think the jury is still out, obviously, but he seems to be hitting all of the right boxes that the previous two coaches lacked on. Keep in mind, I was never a huge fan of Butch.

1) Recruiting Ohio hard. There's so much talent in this area, there is no reason to bring a bunch of kids up from the South to fill your team.
2) Mentality - "If they are keeping score, we want to win" little things like this just ooze confidence and make me want to take a bullet for the guy.
3) Assistant Experience - We actually have a pretty solid list of Assistant coaches, we don't have a grad student running Special Teams for example.

I'm not saying he's going to have us competing for a Natty, but if we are in the running for a league title in the next couple years, it is a success.

It would not surprise me to see the Butch Jones, deer in the head light stare in the first year. He probably does not have all the skills, since he is a young guy with his first permanent gig. He will grow in the job and do great things here. Ideally, he will get the program back to the prior level and move on to a larger program, if he so desires.

I'm not sure I agree with CLF having the deer in the headlight stare likes Jones. I feel his one year as HC of OSU and his high level coaching resume will likely keep that from happening. I do think it will be more like 2nd year Butch where he will make a lot of questionable/boneheaded calls due to lack of experiance. Unlike the last guy I do think we will see improvement from the team, and the coaches as the season progresses.

It wasn't Jones having deer in the headlights that earned us a 4-8 record in 2010. The roster had big holes and we had a year long of a cadre of remaining upperclassmen that were pouting and throwing a tantrum that the prior staff was no longer there. People have no idea the shenanigans that staff had to deal with by team leaders that first year to get buy in by year 2 (you know, when they won a conference title). Took some guys leaving and some guys growing up to detoxify that locker room.

That will not be an issue on this team. This roster is hungry to finally be led. The limitations on this team are that the prior staff did a crappy job of putting a roster together and coaching up the talent it did have.

With respects to BK vs. BJ vs. LF...

People often forget that BJ was still a very new to coaching when he first got here. BK had been the head coach at Gran Valley State for 13 years and three more at CM before coming to Cincinnati. By comparison, BJ had just three years as a head coach at CMU. BK had tons of experience over him which I think was a major reason why there was no learning curve for him.

With respects to LF, there will definitely be a learning curve. It will be interesting to me see whether Mike Denbrock will be given complete control of the offense. BK had Jeff Quinn draw up the plays for the offense prior to the game, but BK was the one who adjusted the play calling during the game. Jones and Mike Bajakian had a similar dynamic. I have to think LF might just let Denbrock, a veteran coach with over 20 years in the business run that side of the ball. I guess we are going to have to wait and see to know for sure.

I think Jones did a great job in many facets of coaching, but in game play calling/adjustments and organization was not his forte. Some coaches are better than others at watching and reacting. Jones not so much. Strongly agree that the prior staff to Fickell caused the current problems.

I'm not putting much weight on the 2011 season. The QB situation was a mess - Pryor left, Bauserman was the initial starter and by game 4 true freshman Miller was starting. Additionally, several starters were suspended for 5 games (?). I credit Meyer for making the 2012 season a success. Finally, CLF has 5 years of working with Meyer. I believe that will count for more than we can imagine.

as much as i make fun of miami, it's pretty easy to overlook or get used to its obvious deficiencies. it's constantly being judged by its prettier rival. it lacks the cultural amenities and geography of athens but that just makes it easier to do sh!t. guess we'll just go to heuston woods. or disc golf. that's a sweet course. the campus handily thwarts the campus body, the male campus body. as tacky as a majority of its women are, i can't complain too much considering i married one. luckily i knew the rugrats

I think you're a little easy on Jones for his part in not getting the buy in from those guys. It's a 2 way street... but that roster was far more talented than a 4-8 team despite the depth issues. You could see the talent on display in that Oklahoma game. They had the players to really compete and do big things. The staff never got the buy in and wasn't great at managing games (never was great a managing games, but ultimately got he buy in year 2 and did a solid job).

Not too easy on him. I saw the players acting like spoiled brats first hand in that spring. That locker room was thin and toxic the winter and spring of 2010.

If you recall I was pretty sure that summer that the season was going to be a sh!tshow.

I would agree more with Rath on this one. Butch tried really hard to get buy in and it just didn't work. It took a losing season to snap them out of it. The roster was also incredibly thin at several spots. Receiver corp was very thin with the USC transfer going down in the first game with an ACL tear, DJ Wood with injuries to his shoulder and elbow where he probably shouldn't have been even playing, McClung with a plate in his shoe as a true freshman for his turf toe, and Munchie burning his red shirt to fill in at WR because there were no warm bodies. I remember Wolfe had to play what seemed like every snap on the defensive side and he would just look out of gas.

WUAB TV-43 Cleveland has also been added to the TV syndication. I believe more stations will continue to be added as we get closer.

For those with DirecTV or Verizon Fios, this game will also be carried nationally through ESPN college extra.

The biggest thing lost on a lot of people about his '11 season is that he was in EVERY game and played a tough schedule. I think of all 7 losses only 1 was by more than 7 points, which to me shows that he had some learning to do on pulling those games out (which is understandable given his coaching experience to that point). As many have said, what he has done here so far gives me a ton of hope for the future, and that season definitely isn't the scar people seem to think it was. He was bookended by two national championship winning coaches who have head coached for literal decades, and he's inserted into a ****** situation as a position coach with 8 years of coaching experience. Of course there will be drop-off there.

This roster has a ton of holes is BAD places to have them (O-Line and QBs, kicking game) so I don't expect 8 wins, but I think that given our schedule 5-6 wins this year would be good, and hopefully we'll be able to fill those holes with a full season/off-season cycle.
