If they got to 60+ in the Senate, that would be filibuster-proof.

Or do you think it would be bad for the country to get so lopsided? What it if got to 70-30 by 2020. Would that be a bad thing -- in either direction (Rep or Dem majority)?

I think (some) balance is a good thing. But it obviously slows down changes to policy.

What we're saying is that stopping the liberals from being butthurt is not dependent on republicans flipping anything.

Well, I originally responded to this comment:

"Democrats have moved too far left and will continue to lose and lose. The losses in the last 8-10 years for democrats have been, by any measure, devastating and will continue."

I assumed by "losing" he meant that the Repub majorities in Congress would continue to increase.

It wont get that lopsided, because at some point, the democrats will realize they need fresh ideas and some depth to their opposition. Right now they have no ideas and no depth and their opposition involves kicking their feet and screaming "racist", "sexist", and "Russia". They need to complete the 7 stages of grief before they can move on. The thing about Trump is he has the ability to see and plan beyond the current news cycle. He'll even concede a cycle and even consecutive cycles and watches the opposition dig a deeper hole. What's sad is that almost 2 years later and the left can't figure that out.

Another argument could be that at least 45% of voters (or more) agree with Dem ideas as they are now.

Even if you don't agree with those ideas, and in fact think they are terrible ideas, with 45% of American voters agreeing with them, that's enough mass of voters that the ideas can't be dismissed or ignored. They have to be dealt with, understood, and negotiated with.

I actually agree with your premise. Both sides have about 40 to 45% that will support the party line whatever it may be. Its when the party in charge tries to ram down what the 45% wants to the other 55% that there is backlash. See obamacare.

The GOP will be in major trouble, rightly or wrongly, if they repeal obamacare without addressing pre existing conditions. As much as americans hate obamacare they hate pre-existing conditions with the same level of intensity if not more

That's a great point, solo. Even if it doesn't make sense for people to hate PEC ... they do.

Balance is good only when there really is "balance". It doesn't work well when the Demoncratic party actually comes out and says they will dam anything the Republicans want to do.

I'm really P'sed off at McConnell that worthless do nothing Republican. I can't actually believe that he doesn't to employ the Harry Reid rule on Healthcare and the other one that I can't remember at this time. He actually thinks that the Demons wouldn't resort to it if they were in the Reps shoes. He's an idiot. It's obvious the Demons have no conscience and couldn't care less about Rep. feelings. Man, I'd A-bomb those bills and leave those Demons feeling like Sadam did in the Gulf War.
