Any ODU mbb fan with a good memory
Did the Monarchs play the Soviet Union National Team (essentially the same team that won the Olympic Gold medal earlier that year in Seoul, South Korea) that toured America in November of 1988?

I have old reports of the game Middle Tennessee played and won in overtime over the Communists, but was told just recently that the Monarchs also played that team as well.

Google's good memory reveals that the Monarchs played a Soviet national Team at least three times.

As you suggest, the men played the Seoul Gold Medal team in a 1988 exhibition game. They lost, 95-86, which is noted on Page 75 of the book "Old Dominion University Men's Basketball" by Thomas R. Garrett & Clay Shampoe.

On page 56 of the same book, we learn that nearly a decade earlier -- in November 1979 -- the male Monarchs defeated the Soviets, 76-74 in overtime.

Moreover, this New York Times article decribes the ODU women's basketball team 76-66 loss to the Soviet women on Dec. 14, 1979.

This article has some pretty good anecdotes about that game against the Soviets;

At the time of the game it was the largest crowd to see a women's basketball game. Was there, crazy atmosphere.

I was there also. That giant ogre of a center for the Russians was not a female. I'm not sure it was male either.
