Tulsa World: Something major seems imminent for Southern Hills, and it could be a PGA Championship Published: May 19, 2017 9:04 AM CDT
In a compelling email, it was announced Southern Hills Country Club will be the site of a “fireside chat and news conference” May 30.
That in itself is interesting, but the significance of the event became apparent when the email reported participants will include Paul Levy, president of the PGA of America; Kerry Haigh, the chief championships officer of the PGA of America; and Craig Bothwell, president of Southern Hills Country Club.
Levy and Haigh wouldn’t travel to Tulsa for a discussion of anything below the level of major golf championships, and they wouldn’t be at Southern Hills unless Southern Hills had been identified as the site for an important tournament......Or tournaments.
An attempt to contact club general manager Nick Sidorakis was unsuccessful, but it is believed that Southern Hills might be designated for a Senior PGA Championship or another PGA Championship — or to host both events.
While the 2020, 2022 and 2024 Senior PGA Championship tournaments are set to be played in Benton Harbor, Michigan, the PGA of America has not yet announced the sites of the 2021 and 2023 tournaments.
The 2021 tournament would make sense for Tulsa. The next available PGA Championship year is 2024, so it seems unlikely the PGA of America would want Southern Hills to host the 2023 Senior PGA Championship and then hustle to prepare for the 2024 PGA Championship.
