If you can't find a place on the street or a parking lot near the stadium, just do what a lot of folks do and park in the Beau Rivage parking garage and walk across the street! It's free, covered and secure.

UPDATED WITH OTHER'S SUGGESTIONS

(05-19-2017 10:47 PM)SouthernMissSNu Wrote:  I figured this would be good to get started for those of you making your way down to the tournament next week. As this is not comprehensive, please add in input.

Welcome to "the coast"! The Mississippi Gulf Coast is a near-continuous stretch of great nearby cities and towns with their own charm and things to do ranging from beaches, to casinos, to restaurants. It has a little bit of everything.

Tip: For free parking, park in the Beau Rivage's Parking garage across the Street from MGM Park and make the short walk across Hwy 90 to the stadium.

Explore each of the coast's towns if you have some time to kill
Biloxi- Where the tournament is hosted, casinos, great local history.
Ocean Springs (east of Biloxi)- Across the bay. Walkable downtown with some good shops, bars and restaurants. Very quaint small town feel to it. My favorite city on the coast.
Gulfport (west of Biloxi)- continues up Highway 49 past I-10. Diverse city with a forming downtown area. Check out Fishbone Alley for a cool (though small) bar/restaurant area
Long Beach and Pass Christian (west of Gulfport)- two smaller cities with their own charm, shops and restaurants.
Bay St. Louis (west of LB and the Pass)- smaller city with walkable restaurants and arts scene. Right on the coastline. Fun town to explore.

Local Eats- The Coast has everything from seafood to New Orleans style to Vietnamese to fine dining
Half Shell Oyster House- Biloxi and Gulfport
The Blind Tiger- Biloxi and Bay St. Louis
Tony's Brick Oven Pizzeria- Gulfport
Patio 44- Biloxi
Mary Mahoney's- Biloxi
The Chimney's- Gulfport
Murky Waters- Gulfport
Aunt Jenny's- Ocean Springs
McElroy's- Biloxi, Ocean Springs
Darwell's Cafe- Long Beach
Desportes Seafood
BB's PoBoys
Rebel Dip
Salute
Buzzys
Shaggy's
Bacchus
The Filling Station
Phonecia's
Salvetti's Italian Grill
Tripani's
Leo's Wood Fired Pizza

Snacks
Pop Brothers (Popsicle) (As seen on Million Dollar Buyer)- Gulfport, Ocean Springs
Tat-o-nut (Donut shop)- Ocean Springs
Coast Roast Coffee & Tea

Family Attractions/Museums/Local History
Big Play Family Fun Center (Mini Golf, Go-Karts, Bowling, etc.)- Biloxi
Margaritaville Resort (arcade games, ropes course, etc.)- Biloxi
Biloxi Welcome Center (well done history and background of Biloxi and the gulf coast)
George Ohr (the "Mad Potter") Museum- Biloxi
Walter Anderson Museum (famous local painter)- Ocean Springs
Lynn Meadows Discovery Center (children's museum)- Gulfport
Maritime Seafood Museum- Biloxi
Beauvoir home and museum (the last home of Jefferson Davis)- Biloxi
NASA Stennis Space Center/Infinity Science Center- north of Bay St. Louis
Gulf Islands National Seashore visitor's center- Ocean Springs
Ship Island Excursions (boat ride out to Ship Island where Ft. Massachusetts is located)- Gulfport
Gulf Islands Waterpark- Gulfport

Local Breweries
Chandeleur- Gulfport
Biloxi Brewing- Biloxi
Lazy Magnolia- Kiln (Middle Hancock County)

Casinos- each casino has its own restaurants, buffets, entertainment, and nightlife
Beau Rivage- Biloxi (right across the street from the stadium)
Hard Rock- Biloxi

Boomtown- Biloxi
Palace- Biloxi
Treasure Bay- Biloxi

No it's not Dallas with it's airports, millions of people, fancy places to eat or shop. Biloxi, actually has things families enjoy doing.

I've never been to Biloxi, and definitely plan to go sometime. And I get that some people prefer the ocean or even smaller towns to a metropolis like Dallas/Fort Worth. Personally, I love the ocean!! But let's not pretend Dallas doesn't have many things that families don't enjoy doing. It's definitely not an oceanside resort, but there are an awful many families in Dallas/Fort Worth doing a multitude of many other family things there. Just sayin'.

Apples and oranges. A place like Biloxi is a place people from Dallas go to visit, and a place like Dallas is where people from Biloxi go to visit.

So if you are tired of a place with pro sports, Six Flags, museums, opera, championship golf courses, etc., go to Biloxi. If you are tired of sun, sand, slots, and fish, go to Dallas.

I've been to both.

Exactly. I've been to both a few times and to be honest after the 3rd time in Dallas there's really nothing left to see or do. For me. I still enjoy Biloxi every time I go. That might be reversed for someone that enjoys the big city more.

I looked forward to my first trip to Dallas and didn't mind the second one. So those that's not been there will probably feel the same. To me Biloxi would be a great rotation city for the tourney...

small town USA but with tons of things to do and a really short drive to New Orleans if you enjoy the big city. My wife and I are not big drinkers so we usually stay in Biloxi and make at least one trip over to New Orleans every trip to Biloxi. Leave New Orleans around 11pm getting back to our room around mid night. Of course if you are going to drink that wouldn't be wise to do.

My biggest concern is not the city of Dallas but the court setup and sight lines of playing in a football stadium. Having watched a F4 played in Dallas the sight lines were awful...

even those seats surrounding the court.

We all want to enjoy the city we are going to but the reason we are there is basketball. If you are 20 yards away from the court it will make this a bad experience . No matter if I enjoyed the other things.

The one thing we know....

Dallas wanted the tourney and Biloxi did not make a bid.

I go to Biloxi once a year, for about a week each time. I am not a beach person, but I enjoy the scenic beach drive and the sights and sounds of the waterfront. I don't go to the fancy restaurants either, perhaps that is my loss, but my business in Biloxi takes my attention 10-14 hours/day while I am there. Still, a preferred destination.

As for Dallas, I have lived too close for too long to see it or any other metropolis as a vacation destination, but I can see where there would be some attractions available for families. My grandkids, from rural Iowa, enjoy going to the pro baseball games that are unavailable in their area. Last year we were able to use a luxury box courtesy of a former partner of mine. BIG deal to the kids. Plenty of fine restaurants, if dining is one's thing, but no beach.

I'm all about accentuating the positive but we (Mississippi) have some of the worst beaches in America...it's mainly due to the fact we have so many barrier islands off the coast which keep our waters fugly (reminiscent of dark lake water and zero surf, ever).

Coming from a landlocked Texas town, it will have to do. If my business were in Santa Monica, that would be better. But Biloxi > Pecos.

I happen to agree with OptimisticOwl on this one. While the ocean is dirty looking and bot the greens you get from Orange Beach to PC Beach or the deep blues you get in S. Fla...

the drive from the bridge to Gulf Port is really nice. Most places on the Gulf you have too much development, ocean side to even view the ocean. You have the nice southern homes on one side and a fairly nice white sand beach on the other ...along with a dirty looking ocean.

Over the last 5 years I averaged spending 10 days a month (12 months a year) on the Gulf (mostly PC Beach but a few trips to Ft Myers Beach and Treasure Island ) or the Atlantic mostly from Ft Lauderdale to Miami. As for the drive down the coast....

Biloxi is one of the nicest drives because of the open view. In Panama you get some views and the greenish blue waters and white sand can't be beat. But as I said...its not 15 or 20 miles of open coast line.

Where do the nice beaches start ? Gulf Shores ?

Talk about bad beaches --- anyone been to Holly Beach in Louisiana ?

How are the beaches in Texas ?

Yes, Gulf Shores would be the start or maybe Ft. Morgan, but you can't really see much of the beach from the road on Ft. Morgan. Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Perdido, etc. is a nice stretch of white beaches with greenish blue water.

Having grown up in Alabama, I have vacationed in Orange Beach/Perdido Key all my life. I love it.

If you have time, take the Ship Island Excursion. Beaches on the south side of the island are like Alabama beaches.

Galveston is the closest to Houston but is pretty crappy IMO (but I grew up going to Nantucket so I guess my standards are high).

Much better once you get to Matagorda Bay (which is the middle of nowhere)... But I guess a tourney in Corpus (Close to Port Aransas) or Brownsville (Close to South Padre.... And Mexico) could work.

Heck, isn't El Paso just as close to San Diego (drive-time) as it is to the Texas coast ?

Yup, it's about 100 miles closer to La Jolla than South Padre (driving).

From Biloxi Brewing Co.

"Brewery Tours and Tastings this week during the C-USA Tournament. Brewery will be open from 3-6PM every night this week starting tonight. Come in pre-game to have a frosty adult beverage, or come in after the game to celebrate your win, or drown your sorrows of loss, either way, we will be here to support you!!"

Be sure to get a Salty Dog if you like the gose/sour styles. Biloxi Beach Blonde is pretty good as well.
