Hmmmm. So....the question is.....special deal? ....or shared revenue? That game was a big part of the reason I was certain we'd see bidding from major networks. So, regardless of the shared revenue answer----this announcement is a little troubling for the main media deal.

The details of the contract did not state dollars or any revenue sharing with AAC - but also did not state that it would all go to Navy either. Will have to see.

Quote:CBS SPORTS TO REMAIN HOME OF ANNUAL ARMY-NAVY FOOTBALL CLASSIC THROUGH 2028

10 Year Extension Provides for Rights across CBS Sports,
CBS Sports Network and CBS Sports Digital

CBS Sports will remain the home for one of the greatest rivalries in sports, ARMY-NAVY, with a new all-encompassing 10-year deal extending its broadcast, cable and digital rights through 2028. The announcement was made today by Sean McManus, Chairman, CBS Sports; Boo Corrigan, Director of Athletics at the United States Military Academy and Chet Gladchuk, Director of Athletics at the United States Naval Academy.

Beginning in 2009, CBS, Army and Navy, moved the game to the second Saturday in December, providing a stand-alone window showcasing the Army-Navy classic as it is the only Football Bowl Subdivision game that day. With the move, Army-Navy annually culminates college football’s regular season on CBS. Last year’s Army-Navy game was the most-watched in 24 years.

“Army-Navy is more than a game, and it’s an honor to continue broadcasting this epic annual event,” said McManus. “Moving the game in 2009 allowed us to further shine a spotlight on Army-Navy, as we tell the compelling stories on and off the field of the young people at the Service Academies. Army-Navy is a cornerstone of our college football programming and we could not be more proud to continue this relationship.”

“CBS has remained a cherished partner to the Naval Academy Athletic Association for decades,” said Gladchuk. “They are always at the top of their game and the vision we share reflects mutual respect, gratitude, and always a team effort. America’s game and CBS are synonymous with a quality product, delivered around the world, to an audience that truly appreciates the manner in which our military are portrayed. Navy is proud of our relationship and this renewed commitment to our premier service academies and most especially the men and women who proudly serve our country.”

“We are very excited to continue our partnership with CBS,” said Corrigan. “The Army-Navy game truly is America's Game, and CBS has done a tremendous job telling the stories of our cadets and midshipmen from coast-to-coast. The Army-Navy game represents all that is good with the sport of college football and we are elated that CBS will continue providing the narrative to our fans, graduates and servicemen and servicewomen all over the world for the next decade.”

The new agreement, beginning in 2019, provides for continued rights across CBS’s suite of platforms. CBS Sports Network will televise extensive shoulder programming, including live on-site coverage of the MARCH ON as part of official pre-game coverage, archival programming and encore showings of the game. The deal also keeps the annual Army-Navy basketball showdown on CBS Sports Network.

Army-Navy will be streamed on CBSSports.com and via CBS All Access, the CBS Television Network’s digital subscription video on-demand and live streaming service.

Broadcast coverage on CBS also includes a special edition of the pregame show, COLLEGE FOOTBALL TODAY, dedicated to Army-Navy. CBS has televised the game every year since 1996. CBS will broadcast the 118th Army-Navy game on Saturday, Dec. 9 (3:00 PM, ET) from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa.

RE: CBS signs 10-year extension to remain home of @ArmyNavyGame through 2028:
What I posted on reddit:

Quote:This is strange; this was supposed to be an asset in the AAC's upcoming tv rights negotiation. It was expected that all of Navy's media rights (which is currently owned by CBS and expires in 2019, I think) and 50% of the Army-Navy game would go to whichever provider the American renegotiates with.

This throws a wrench in that idea...

I think with the value of the game, either Army, Navy, or both were not willing to split up that revenue with an entire conference, which is fair.

Further, this probably cements the idea that Army wants nothing to do with a conference.

AAC is still in good footing, after experiencing record viewership on par with other Power programs not named Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan, Texas (et al.). Navy viewership is a known product and will only boost the conferences profile, even without the Army-Navy game, when their rights deal is merged with their conference's.

I think this is about money really, and the AAC not being able to guarantee that Navy won't lose money if they bring 50% of the rights under the AAC banner.

Think about it; if CBS give Army and Navy $5 mill each year for the rights... in 10 years that's $50 mill for each.

Take Navy's share, and split that up between the rest of the conference, and Army still gets $50 mill but Navy only gets $50/12 = ~$4.167 mill over 10 years.

Even if you make a more amenable split in favor of Navy, that's peanuts compared to what Army will make, and what carrot are you going to hold over Army to make them play ball?

I think in the best interest of Army, Navy, and the conference in this scenario, it's better that this happened.

We do still get Navy's rights in the AAC deal moving forward, which is still very valuable... just not the Army-Navy game

Which is odd--because Gladchuk was the one who seemed most perturbed at the Boise request. Well, the only conclusion we can draw now is that the Army-Navy game will not be part of the AAC negotiations in the upcoming deal. Its premature to assume the Navy portion of the new CBS-deal is not being shared.

It does bring up a question. The Army-Navy game is genrally played at a neutral site. Are neutral site games ever even part of any conference package? For instance, did the "Advocare Kickoff Game" in Houston own the rights to the 2016 Houston vs Oklahoma game ---or does the Big12? Or does the AAC? I actually don't know. I assumed the conference of the "home" team owned the rights---but that might not be correct. It might be that the Advocare Kickoff Game owns the rights (just like a bowl game). If that's the case, then the Army-Navy game was never going to be part of the AAC package as long as it remained a neutral site game.

When Navy joined the American, they did so with all parties agreeing to make their media value whole. Either our contract would cover them, or they could sell the army-navy game. This just means the AAC contract at this point does not equal the estimated $10-million a year value of the Navy portion of the Army-Navy game - which shouldn't be a surprise to anyone as most comments on here hope for $5-8 million in the next contract.

Wishful thinking.

Adding 8 Navy conference games plus the Air Force and ND games every other year will more than pay for itself.

Plus they help our bowl situation.

We've got no claim to the Army-Navy income stream, as they've earned that money all by themselves.

thats flawed, if we all start talking earned..no one in the AAC, not named navy has rating similar to Houston in football for the last 7 years or uconn in mens basketball ...

and uconns earned their womens bball dominance all our womens bball teams are leaches to that

we are all in or we're all out...it makes no sense for imbetween

We do not know numbers. I'm more into thinking that this could be a sign of CBS willing to bid for AAC rights since Navy is part of the league
Let's wait and see

theory of mine:
what was said when navy joined was that it would be evenly shared, under the assumption we made more than they made then

we assumed that meant; we pay them what they made first if we are lower....then everyone splits the rest evenly

what if that meant..we'll sell the army/navy game separately keep whatever money that makes, deduct that from our revenue share, and if the rest (per share) totals above that, we'll then get a smaller share to match everyone elses

ps pure speculation by me

This is what I recall. Gladchuk was probably one of the biggest people complaining about a special deal for Boise. Now if they keep all of the money for this game it would seem very odd that he would speak out about Boise. Maybe they will negotiate certain properties separately to maximize value and this will be rolled in. I have no idea of course.

That is in interesting question. I don't know who owns the tv rights to games like that. Seems like a lot more of these are popping up so i can't imagine tv partners saying we are ok losing a home game for Clemson or Bama or whomever so they can have this separate deal.

Army-Navy is a non-conference game played at a neutral site. Right now, ESPN only has rights to conference controlled games, or in other words, conference and non-conference home games. It is spelled out very specifically on the AAC website. Hence, unless the game is played at Navy's home, it doesn't appear to fall under the ESPN contract. Now, CBS does have rights in AAC neutral site games. Whether the conference gets some money under that arrangement, who knows?
